Yes. An old desktop or laptop can host Pi-hole; you do not need a Raspberry Pi. The key checks are whether the machine can run a currently supported operating system, whether it can keep a stable network address, and whether you are comfortable leaving it on. Pi-hole’s own resource needs are modest, but the old computer’s power use and reliability depend on the specific machine.
What an old PC needs to run Pi-hole
Pi-hole is software, not Raspberry Pi-only hardware. Its documentation says it can run on hardware using a supported operating system and lists x86_64 architectures, including amd64 and i686, among supported FTL architectures. Check the exact architecture and operating-system version of the computer you plan to reuse; the machine must be able to run an actively maintained release of a supported OS.
Pi-hole lists 512 MB of RAM and 2 GB of free disk space as requirements, with 4 GB of free space recommended. Those figures describe Pi-hole, not the total needs of the host operating system, a graphical desktop, or other services you might run alongside it. Pi-hole’s prerequisites provide the current compatibility and resource details.
Why repurpose an old PC?
If you already own a suitable computer, you can put it to use without buying a Raspberry Pi specifically for Pi-hole. A spare desktop may also be convenient if you already know how to maintain its operating system. But it may be larger, noisier, or less energy-efficient than a small single-board computer; the documentation’s low memory and storage requirements do not tell you how much electricity your particular PC will use.

- Includes Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Model B with 1.5GHz 64-bit quad-core CPU (4GB RAM)
- Includes Pre-Loaded 32GB EVO+ Micro SD Card (Class 10), USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Premium High-Gloss Raspberry Pi 4 Case with Integrated Fan Mount, CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- CanaKit 3.5A USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 Power Supply (US Plug) with Noise Filter, Set of Heat Sinks, Display Cable - 6 foot (Supports up to 4K60p)
- CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)
Whether reusing it saves money depends on its condition and your local electricity cost. Consider the computer’s age, power draw, cooling, and whether it can remain on reliably. There is no universal energy-saving figure that applies to every old PC.
Choose an installation approach
Pi-hole’s getting-started documentation describes both bare-metal and Docker installation paths. Neither is the universal best choice; pick based on the PC’s current setup and how you prefer to manage software.

- 2. 4 GHz and 5. 0 GHz IEEE 802. 11b/g/n/ac wireless LAN, Bluetooth 5. 0, BLE
- 2 × USB 3. 0 ports, 2 x USB 2. 0 Ports
- 2 × micro HDMI ports supproting up to 4Kp60 video resolution
- Micro SD card slot for loading operating system and data storage
| Approach | May suit you if | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Bare-metal | You want Pi-hole installed directly on the host operating system. | Follow the official bare-metal instructions for the supported OS you are using. |
| Docker | You already use containers or want to manage Pi-hole as a containerized service. | You will need to be comfortable maintaining the container and its configuration. |
Use the official installation guide to follow the steps for your chosen method rather than relying on a generic command that may not match your OS or installation path.
Set a stable address before relying on Pi-hole
Pi-hole needs a static IP address so that devices can keep finding it as their DNS server. You can configure a static address on the computer, or create a DHCP reservation in your router so it assigns the same address to the Pi-hole host. A reservation is often convenient because the router manages the assignment.

- 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB LPDDR4-3200 SDRAM (depending on model)
- 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz IEEE 802.11ac wireless, Bluetooth 5.0, BLE Gigabit Ethernet
- 2 USB 3.0 ports; 2 USB 2.0 ports.
- Raspberry Pi standard 40 pin GPIO header (fully backwards compatible with previous boards)
DNS uses TCP and UDP port 53. If another DNS service on the PC is already using that port, resolve the conflict before installing or starting Pi-hole. Pi-hole’s prerequisites document the address and port requirements.
Make the home network use Pi-hole
Installing Pi-hole does not automatically make every device in the home use it. For network-wide use, configure the router’s DHCP settings to distribute the Pi-hole host’s address as DNS. The exact labels and menus vary by router; consult its documentation for the DHCP or local-network settings. Pi-hole’s post-installation guidance covers configuring DHCP clients to use Pi-hole.

- CONVENIENT ACCESSORIES: The power supply features an inline on/off switch neoprene bag that holds and protects all the parts when not in use and the QuickStart guide is updated and written for Raspberry Pi 4.
- IMPORTANT: Kit does NOT include Keyboard, Mouse or Monitor
- Install Pi-hole: use the official guide for bare-metal or Docker on the supported host OS.
- Reserve the host address: assign the PC a stable IP, preferably with a router DHCP reservation if that suits your network.
- Set router DHCP DNS: enter the Pi-hole host’s address as the DNS server provided to clients.
- Verify a client: check that a device has received the intended DNS server after renewing its network connection or lease.
If your router cannot advertise a custom DNS server through DHCP, you may need another network configuration approach; the router’s capabilities determine the available options.
Understand what Pi-hole blocks—and what it does not
Pi-hole works as a DNS sinkhole: it can block requests to domains on its configured blocklists by preventing those domains from resolving normally. That scope is useful for filtering across devices that use it, but it is not a promise to remove every ad, tracker, or unwanted page element. Some content is served from the same domains as wanted content, and devices or apps may use other DNS paths.

Plan for downtime
Every device that relies on Pi-hole for DNS depends on the host being available. If the old PC is off, crashes, or loses its network connection, clients using it may be unable to resolve domain names until Pi-hole returns or another DNS path is available. That is an operational trade-off of using one host; consider how much you value uninterrupted name resolution before making it the sole DNS server for the household.
A suitable old PC is a practical Pi-hole host when it can run a supported OS, keep a stable address, and stay available enough for your needs. The decision is less about buying a particular device and more about the condition, maintenance, and ongoing power use of the machine you already have.
