Owncast can run on Ubuntu as a self-hosted RTMP ingest and viewing server, but installing it does not by itself send its video to YouTube. Owncast accepts broadcasts at its own RTMP endpoint; YouTube requires an encoder configured separately with YouTube’s stream URL and key. The official documentation reviewed for this guide does not establish a built-in Owncast-to-YouTube relay, so you will need to verify a separate bridge before relying on that architecture for a continuous YouTube broadcast.

This guide covers the documented Owncast setup, how to make its service start after a reboot, and the separate YouTube requirements—without presenting an unverified relay as a working feature.

What Owncast can—and cannot—do in this setup

Owncast is a self-hosted streaming server. A broadcasting encoder sends video to Owncast, which makes that feed available through its own service. By default, the web interface uses TCP port 8080 and RTMP ingest uses TCP port 1935. The documented RTMP destination is rtmp://yourserver:1935/live/your-stream-key; an encoder may instead provide the key in a separate field.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube is a distinct destination. Its encoder setup uses a YouTube stream URL and stream key. Owncast’s documented ingest setup and YouTube’s encoder setup do not, on their own, join the two services. Do not assume that entering a YouTube key into Owncast, or publishing to Owncast, makes the video appear on YouTube.

To use Owncast as one part of a YouTube workflow, identify a separate relay or encoder that explicitly accepts the Owncast feed and publishes to YouTube. Before using it for 24/7 delivery, verify its media input and output paths, whether it re-encodes video, how it handles reconnects, where its credentials are stored, and how its process is restarted. Those implementation details are not established by the Owncast and YouTube documentation summarized here.

Prepare the Ubuntu host

Choose a host and release

Use an Ubuntu machine with a stable internet connection, sufficient storage, and enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream and expected audience. A cloud Linux server and physical hardware can both host Owncast. Compare providers or machines on sustained outbound bandwidth, bandwidth charges or limits, availability of ports 8080 and 1935, server location, recovery behavior, and who maintains the operating system. Owncast lists Linode/Akamai, Reclaim Cloud, and Vultr as providers with one-click deployment options; availability and hosting terms vary, so check each provider directly.

Download the Owncast Linux release that matches the host’s architecture. Owncast’s quick installer can download the current platform build and FFmpeg if FFmpeg is absent. Owncast recommends inspecting a remote installer script before running it; do not run the installer as root. For a manual installation, install FFmpeg if needed and use the matching Owncast release.

Allow the required ports

Allow inbound TCP port 8080 for the web interface and TCP port 1935 for RTMP ingest, if both are needed. Check the Ubuntu host firewall and the cloud provider’s firewall or security rules; opening a port in only one layer is not enough. Restrict access where practical, especially for the administration interface, and do not expose additional ports without a reason.

Install Owncast and confirm it starts

  1. Install the matching release. Download the Linux build for the host architecture, install or confirm FFmpeg as needed, and extract the release according to Owncast’s Linux instructions.
  2. Test Owncast in the foreground. From the extracted Owncast directory, start it with ./owncast. A directly launched process runs in the foreground; closing its terminal or ending the session can stop it. Use this as an initial check, not as the 24/7 service arrangement.
  3. Set up a systemd service. Follow Owncast’s Linux systemd instructions, using a dedicated owncast account rather than root. The documented service configuration uses Restart=always and RestartSec=5, so systemd attempts to restart the process after it exits. Configure the service’s working directory and executable path for the release you actually installed instead of copying an assumed path.
  4. Enable and start the service. Run systemctl enable --now owncast. Check its state with systemctl status owncast and follow its logs with journalctl -u owncast -f.
  5. Secure the installation. Change the documented default administrator password and stream key to strong, unique values before using the service. Treat the admin password and stream key as separate credentials, keep them private, and do not put live secrets in public examples or logs.

Systemd can restart the Owncast process after a process failure and start it at boot. It cannot guarantee power, internet connectivity, disk health, or availability from the hosting provider. If you run the server on physical hardware, a UPS may help during brief power interruptions; it does not replace network or provider resilience.

Publish a feed to Owncast

In compatible broadcasting software, set the destination to the Owncast server’s RTMP ingest endpoint: rtmp://yourserver:1935/live/your-stream-key. Replace the server address and key with your own values, or enter the key in the software’s separate stream-key field if it provides one. Keep the key private. Confirm that the encoder can reach port 1935 through both the host and provider firewalls.

This configures an encoder to send a feed to Owncast. It does not configure YouTube delivery. The Owncast documentation includes OBS and FFmpeg examples for publishing to Owncast, but those examples should not be mistaken for a verified Owncast-to-YouTube relay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure YouTube as a separate destination

  1. Get YouTube’s ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. Enter them in the encoder or separately verified relay that will publish to YouTube. Do not reuse Owncast’s key as the YouTube key.
  2. Use YouTube’s published encoder settings. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, with no more than four seconds between keyframes. Choose the resolution and bitrate for the actual encoder and connection; the cited settings guidance does not supply a single bitrate suitable for every stream.
  3. Use encrypted ingest where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS for delivery to its servers. Use the URL and protocol provided for the YouTube broadcast rather than assuming Owncast’s RTMP endpoint is interchangeable.
  4. Test and monitor the complete path. Test with video and audio similar to the intended broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. For an Owncast-to-YouTube design, confirm that the separately chosen bridge can ingest the Owncast output and reconnect or restart as needed. A successful test publishing to Owncast alone does not verify the YouTube leg.

Plan bandwidth, sessions, and archives

Estimate outbound traffic

Owncast’s documentation gives these estimates for outbound video transfer:

  • (bitrate in kbps × duration in seconds × viewers) ÷ 8,000,000 = GB
  • bitrate in kbps × viewers ÷ 1,000 = Mbps for estimated peak throughput

In Owncast’s illustrative example, a 4,000 kbps stream with 25 viewers uses 90 GB over two hours and calls for 100 Mbps of peak throughput. Those are documentation examples, not independent measurements or a hosting guarantee. At the same bitrate and viewer count, simple linear extrapolation from that example is 1,080 GB over 24 hours; actual traffic depends on viewers, delivery behavior, and stream configuration. Multiple output qualities can change the calculation. Owncast also notes that S3-compatible object storage can offload video bandwidth.

Do not assume a 24/7 stream becomes one permanent archive

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish what happens in every case above that duration. If you need a replay, check the current Live Control Room behavior for your stream and plan for session boundaries rather than promising one uninterrupted archive.

Common problems and what to check

  • Encoder cannot connect to Owncast: confirm the server address, port 1935, /live path, and Owncast stream key; then check both the Ubuntu firewall and provider-level rules.
  • The web interface is unavailable: check that Owncast is running, that port 8080 is allowed where required, and that the address points to the correct host.
  • Owncast stops after a terminal closes or a reboot: a foreground ./owncast process is not a reboot-persistent service. Check the systemd unit, then use systemctl enable --now owncast and inspect systemctl status owncast.
  • The service repeatedly exits: inspect journalctl -u owncast -f, verify the executable and working directory in the service configuration, and confirm file permissions for the dedicated service account. Automatic restart does not fix a persistent configuration or permission error.
  • Owncast works but YouTube is not live: Owncast ingest success only confirms the feed reached Owncast. Check the separate encoder or relay’s YouTube URL, YouTube stream key, protocol, and YouTube stream-health status.
  • Video drops or quality degrades with more viewers: compare the bitrate and concurrent viewers with available sustained outbound bandwidth. Owncast’s example shows how quickly a high-bitrate stream can require substantial throughput; provider port access alone does not establish adequate capacity.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded prerecorded video live on YouTube, rather than to self-host Owncast, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and does not broadcast from a camera or act as an Owncast relay.
