A GitHub repository page usually shows HTML as code, not as a webpage. To render it, either publish the repository with GitHub Pages for a shareable URL, download or clone it and open the file locally, or use a third-party preview service for a quick inspection.
Choose the right way to view the HTML
| Method | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Pages | A rendered website with a shareable URL | Requires repository configuration and deployment; visibility depends on repository and site settings. |
| Download or clone | Local, offline, or private work | Supporting files must remain in the expected folder structure, and some browser features may not work from a local file. |
| Third-party preview | A quick look without setting up hosting | Depends on an external service that may proxy or rewrite content and assets. |
Publish the repository with GitHub Pages
GitHub Pages is GitHub’s static-site hosting service: it publishes HTML, CSS, and JavaScript from a repository as a website. See GitHub’s overview of Pages for the service and site types.
- Confirm the repository contains the HTML page and any CSS, JavaScript, images, or other assets it uses. An
index.htmlentry file is a convenient default. - In the repository, open Settings, then Pages.
- Choose a publishing source offered for the repository, such as a branch and folder, and save the configuration. The available options and eligibility can depend on GitHub’s current rules and the repository’s plan.
- Wait for GitHub Pages to deploy the site, then open the URL shown in the Pages settings.
A user or organization site uses https://<owner>.github.io; a project site uses https://<owner>.github.io/<repositoryname>. GitHub documents how publishing sources and entry files work in its publishing-source guide.
If the page is blank or unstyled
- Check that the HTML references files that are included in the published source.
- Match filename capitalization exactly; hosted paths can distinguish uppercase and lowercase names.
- Check that asset links use site paths or valid URLs, not GitHub repository
blobpage links.
Open a downloaded or cloned copy locally
For a simple page, you can get the files onto your device and open the HTML in a browser without publishing the repository.

- It can be a gift option
- Download the repository as an archive or clone it with Git, then extract or check out the full directory tree.
- Locate
index.htmlor the specific.htmlfile you want to view. Keep its relative folders intact so linked stylesheets, scripts, images, and fonts can be found. - Double-click the file or use your browser’s Open File command.
The GitHub repository contents API exposes file metadata and download URLs. Opening a local file is suitable for straightforward pages, but browser security rules can limit scripts that use fetch, JavaScript modules, service workers, or other APIs when the page is loaded from a file:// address. If those features fail, serve the project through a local development server; the appropriate command depends on the project’s tooling.
Preview through htmlpreview
For a quick inspection, htmlpreview documents a URL pattern that places a GitHub file URL after its preview address:

https://htmlpreview.github.io/?https://github.com/<owner>/<repo>/blob/<branch>/<path>/index.html
Replace the placeholders with the repository owner, repository name, branch, and path to the HTML file. The service says it fetches the page through a CORS proxy and processes linked assets; details are in the htmlpreview README and its documented input page. This is an external convenience preview, not a GitHub deployment. Do not submit private repository URLs or sensitive content to a service you do not trust, and confirm the preview service is available before relying on it.

Why GitHub displays code instead of the page
A GitHub blob page is a repository file view, not a web-hosting URL for executing the document. A raw-file URL also may not be served with a browser-interpretable HTML content type: the htmlpreview project explains that GitHub serves raw HTML as text/plain, so the browser may show source code instead of rendering it. Use Pages, a local copy, or a preview service rather than expecting the ordinary code or raw view to behave like a hosted site.

Which option should you use?
- Choose GitHub Pages when you want a proper hosted URL to share.
- Choose a local copy when you want to work offline or keep the files on your device.
- Choose a preview service only for a quick look when you accept the external-service dependency.
