You can keep Happo screenshot testing affordable in India by controlling two separate costs: Happo’s monthly snapshot quota and the CI runner that builds and tests your UI. Start with the framework your repository already uses, estimate snapshots as component variants × browsers × Happo runs, then choose a runner based on repository visibility, workload and operational effort. There is no verified basis here for naming one CI provider or cloud VM as the cheapest in India.

What a Happo CI check does

Happo compares screenshots of UI component variants with a baseline as part of a continuous-integration workflow. It supports integrations including Storybook, Cypress and Playwright; the setup path depends on which one your project already uses. See Happo’s product overview and follow the current integration instructions for your framework.

Do not copy an old install command without checking the current guide. The Happo repository notes that the older happo.io package was merged into the happo package. Confirm the current package, commands, configuration file, required credentials and secret names before adding a workflow: Happo repository.

Estimate Happo usage before choosing a plan

Happo defines a snapshot as one screenshot of one component variant in one browser. Its estimate is:

#1 Best Overall
Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

monthly snapshots = component variants × browsers × Happo runs per month

For example, if a project captures 40 variants in one browser and runs Happo 30 times in a month, the estimate is 40 × 1 × 30 = 1,200 snapshots. This is an illustrative calculation, not a measured project result. If it runs on every pull request and main-branch build, count those runs; adding browsers multiplies usage.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

Happo’s pricing page lists a free plan with 5,000 snapshots per month in Chrome, with no time limit or credit card. Paid plans add quota and browser options. Check Happo’s current pricing and browser coverage before relying on a quota; plans and limits can change.

Choose the runner based on visibility and workload

Option Cost considerations When it may fit Trade-offs
GitHub-hosted runner for a public repository GitHub states that hosted-runner usage for public repositories is free under its stated rules. Review the current billing page for applicable details. A public project whose build and screenshot job fit a hosted environment. The workflow still needs to install dependencies, build or serve the UI, and run the integration.
GitHub-hosted runner for a private repository Usage draws on the account’s included allowance; usage beyond it may incur charges. The allowance depends on the account’s plan. A team that values managed runners and has checked its plan allowance against expected minutes and storage. Estimate the job’s actual runtime and check the account’s billing settings rather than assuming private-repository minutes are free.
ubuntu-slim GitHub describes it as a lower-cost option for lightweight tasks. A small job that completes within the runner’s 15-minute maximum timeout and does not require unsupported elevated privileges. GitHub does not present it as suitable for typical heavyweight CI/CD builds. A browser-based screenshot job may exceed its limits or need capabilities it lacks; verify your actual build and test requirements.
Self-hosted runner on your own VM or hardware GitHub’s self-hosted runner use is free under its stated rules, but compute, storage, networking and administration are separate costs borne by your team. No India-specific VM price comparison is established here. A team that already operates suitable infrastructure or can justify managing a dedicated runner. You provision, secure, update and maintain the machine; include that operational work alongside its cloud or on-premises cost.

These are GitHub’s published billing and runner distinctions, not a comparison of India-specific vendor prices. GitHub’s billing rules are at GitHub Actions billing; runner constraints are in GitHub’s hosted-runner reference. For the hosted and self-hosted model overview, see GitHub Actions.

Set up the workflow without guessing at Happo commands

  1. Identify the existing integration. Determine whether the repository uses Storybook, Cypress, Playwright or another Happo-supported path. Avoid introducing a second UI test stack just to capture screenshots unless the project has a reason to do so.
  2. Follow the current Happo guide for that integration. Verify the package name, installation command, configuration filename, script commands, credential names and any required permissions in the live documentation. The available product and repository information does not establish a single current GitHub Actions YAML recipe or exact secret name for every framework.
  3. Store credentials as repository or organization secrets. Use the secret name specified by the current Happo instructions, and reference it from the workflow rather than committing a token. Limit access to the workflows and branches that need it.
  4. Run the required UI preparation before the Happo command. Your job may need to install dependencies, build Storybook or start the app, and wait until the UI is ready. Use the commands and readiness checks applicable to your project, as documented by its framework and Happo integration.
  5. Choose triggers deliberately. Pull requests give early feedback but can increase the number of monthly runs; running only on selected branches or events can reduce usage. Ensure required checks still run where your team needs visual review.
  6. Start with the necessary browser scope. Chrome is included in Happo’s listed free-plan allowance. Add other browsers only if your plan supports them and the additional coverage is worth the increased snapshot count.
  7. Check the first run and monitor actual usage. Confirm the workflow reaches the app, produces Happo results and reports comparison status. Compare actual run frequency and snapshot use with your estimate, then adjust triggers or browser scope if needed.

Keep the India cost estimate honest

  • Separate service charges. Happo quota or plan cost and CI compute cost are distinct. A free snapshot allowance does not make a private-repository hosted runner free, and a free GitHub runner rule does not increase Happo’s quota.
  • Check your GitHub plan and repository visibility. For private repositories, calculate against the included account allowance and possible excess charges. Public-repository hosted usage follows different published rules.
  • Measure runtime in your own workflow. Include dependency installation, UI build or startup, browser work and cleanup. Do not assume a slim runner is suitable solely because it has a lower cost description.
  • Count all runs and variants. Pull requests, branch pushes and scheduled builds all contribute when they invoke Happo; browser count and component variants also affect snapshot consumption.
  • For self-hosting, include the whole operating cost. A VM’s India-region price is only one part of the decision. Account for maintenance, security updates, capacity and the work required to keep the runner available.

Provider quotas, billing allowances and rates are volatile. Confirm current terms on the official pricing and billing pages before budgeting; neither the listed Happo quota nor GitHub’s runner rules establish an India-specific tax treatment or a universal cheapest setup.
