To run Flutter integration tests on BrowserStack App Automate, build the platform-specific test artifacts, upload them, then send a build request that references the upload IDs and the device or devices to test. Android uses an app plus a test-suite APK; iOS uses a test-package ZIP. The workflows have different upload endpoints and build-request fields.

What you need before starting

  • A BrowserStack username and access key. Keep the credentials private; the examples below use environment variables rather than literal keys. See BrowserStack’s Flutter getting-started guide.
  • The app and test artifacts required for your target platform.
  • A device identifier and OS version currently supported by App Automate. Check the current execution documentation before choosing devices; sample device names in documentation are illustrative and can become outdated.
  • curl, or another HTTP client capable of sending multipart uploads and JSON POST requests.

Set credentials in your shell rather than pasting a real access key into a shared script or source repository:

export BROWSERSTACK_USERNAME="YOUR_USERNAME"
export BROWSERSTACK_ACCESS_KEY="YOUR_ACCESS_KEY"

Android: upload the app and test suite, then launch a build

The documented Android flow requires two artifacts: the app under test and the Flutter integration test suite APK. Upload each separately, then pass both returned identifiers to the Android build endpoint.

1. Build the Android artifacts

Prepare an app artifact in APK or AAB format and an Android test-suite APK. The correct Flutter and Gradle build commands depend on how the project is configured, so use the build instructions for your project rather than assuming a single command works for every app. BrowserStack describes the required artifacts and setup in its getting-started guide and Flutter app upload API reference.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Upload the app

Send the app file as multipart form data to the Android app upload endpoint:

curl -u "$BROWSERSTACK_USERNAME:$BROWSERSTACK_ACCESS_KEY"
  -X POST "https://api-cloud.browserstack.com/app-automate/flutter-integration-tests/v2/android/app"
  -F "file=@path/to/app.apk"

Use the actual path and filename of your APK or AAB. Save the app_url returned by the upload response; that is the identifier to use in the build request. See Upload apps for Flutter integration testing.

3. Upload the test-suite APK

Upload the test suite separately to the test-suite endpoint:

  -F "file=@path/to/flutter_test_suite.apk"

Save the returned test_suite_url. BrowserStack’s test-suite upload guide documents this artifact separately from the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Submit the Android build request

Use the identifiers from your own two upload responses, not example bs:// IDs from documentation. Replace the device placeholder with a currently supported device identifier and OS version.

curl -u "$BROWSERSTACK_USERNAME:$BROWSERSTACK_ACCESS_KEY"
  -X POST "https://api-cloud.browserstack.com/app-automate/flutter-integration-tests/v2/android/build"
  -H "Content-Type: application/json"
  -d '{"app":"<uploaded-app-url>","testSuite":"<uploaded-test-suite-url>","devices":["<supported-device>-<os-version>"]}'

The required fields in this documented flow are app, testSuite and devices. The response includes a build_id when the request is accepted. Refer to Execute Flutter integration tests for the current request shape and device guidance.

iOS: upload a test-package ZIP and launch a build

Do not use the Android app-plus-test-suite request for iOS. The documented iOS flow uploads a Flutter test package as a ZIP and launches it using the testPackage field.

1. Prepare and upload the iOS test package

Prepare the iOS Flutter test package ZIP for the project, then upload it to the iOS test-package endpoint:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
curl -u "$BROWSERSTACK_USERNAME:$BROWSERSTACK_ACCESS_KEY"
  -X POST "https://api-cloud.browserstack.com/app-automate/flutter-integration-tests/v2/ios/test-package"
  -F "file=@path/to/flutter_test_package.zip"

Keep the returned package URL or identifier for the build request. Consult BrowserStack’s Flutter setup guide for current package preparation details.

2. Submit the iOS build request

Pass the uploaded package identifier in testPackage and specify one or more currently supported device-and-OS combinations:

curl -u "$BROWSERSTACK_USERNAME:$BROWSERSTACK_ACCESS_KEY"
  -X POST "https://api-cloud.browserstack.com/app-automate/flutter-integration-tests/v2/ios/build"
  -H "Content-Type: application/json"
  -d '{"testPackage":"<uploaded-test-package-url>","devices":["<supported-device>-<os-version>"]}'

The successful response includes a build_id. The iOS request uses testPackage and devices, rather than Android’s app and testSuite fields. See BrowserStack’s execution guide.

Choose devices and inspect the run

The devices field accepts device selections as an array, so you can run against multiple device-and-OS combinations when you need broader coverage. Check BrowserStack’s current supported-device documentation before submitting: catalog entries and OS availability can change, and an example device in an old request should not be treated as a guarantee of current availability.

After submission, use the returned build_id to locate the run in the App Automate dashboard. BrowserStack describes text, console, video and network logs as debugging information available through the dashboard or API; availability and behavior can depend on the run and configuration. See the Flutter App Automate overview.

Common errors and practical fixes

  • The build uses an older app: uploading a changed app creates a new app identifier. Update the request to use the newest app_url rather than reusing a previous upload ID. See the app upload documentation.
  • The build request cannot find an artifact: verify that each field contains the full identifier returned by your own upload call, including any bs:// prefix. Do not paste sample IDs from documentation.
  • Android request rejected or incomplete: confirm that both app and test-suite uploads succeeded and that the JSON uses app, testSuite and devices. Android requires both artifacts in this flow.
  • iOS request rejected or incomplete: check that the ZIP was uploaded through the iOS test-package endpoint and that the build request uses testPackage plus devices.
  • Device is unavailable: check the current supported device and OS combinations, then replace the device string with an available identifier in the documented format.
  • Upload fails: check credentials, local file path, file format and the current upload requirements. BrowserStack’s app upload page has stated a 1 GB upload limit; because limits can change, verify the current page before relying on that ceiling.
  • Credentials are rejected: confirm the username and access key are for the intended BrowserStack account, and ensure the shell variables are set in the same environment where curl runs.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for Flutter integration testing on App Automate. If your adjacent task is capturing a web page rather than testing a native app, one GET request can return an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots.
