To run FFmpeg continuously on an Indian VPS without exhausting its monthly bandwidth, choose a bitrate your transfer allowance can sustain, pace the input in real time, and send it to YouTube over RTMPS. A lower resolution only saves data if it lets you use a lower bitrate. Before going live, verify the VPS’s outbound quota and what happens when you reach it, then test the stream privately and check YouTube’s stream-health feedback.

Calculate how much bandwidth your stream will use

At a steady bitrate, approximate transfer in decimal gigabytes as:

  • Per hour: bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 GB.
  • Per 24-hour day: bitrate in Mbps × 10.8 GB.
  • Per month: bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 × streamed hours in the month.

These estimates convert bits to bytes; they are not provider measurements. Leave headroom for protocol overhead, audio if its bitrate is additional to the video rate, reconnects, monitoring, updates and other traffic counted by your VPS provider. Providers may define GB or TB differently and may meter traffic differently, so check the provider’s quota terms.

Examples at common bitrates

  • At 3 Mbps around the clock for 30 days, the estimate is 3 × 10.8 × 30 = 972 GB, before headroom and other traffic.
  • YouTube’s current H.264 guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p30. At that video rate, continuous streaming is about 54 GB per day or 1,620 GB per 30-day month, before audio and other traffic.

For a fixed transfer allowance, estimate the maximum runtime with available GB ÷ (bitrate in Mbps × 0.45), then reserve a margin instead of planning to consume the entire quota. Multiple simultaneous streams add their bitrates, so their outbound use rises approximately with the combined rate.

Choose a bitrate and format YouTube supports

YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, at frame rates up to 60 fps. It calls for constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo, it recommends AAC or MP3 audio at 128 Kbps; 5.1 audio is supported only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. Its other listed video recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709 for SDR and 8-bit SDR. See YouTube’s live encoder settings; check the current table before configuring a stream because recommendations can change.

Current examples from YouTube’s bitrate table

Ingest codec Resolution and frame rate Video bitrate guidance
H.264 360p30 4 Mbps recommended
H.264 480p30 3 Mbps recommended
H.264 720p30 or 720p60 8 Mbps recommended
H.264 1080p30 5 Mbps recommended
H.264 1080p60 14 Mbps recommended
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 720p30 2 Mbps minimum; 6 Mbps recommended
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 1080p30 4 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended

These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every source or network route will deliver a particular result. The table separates video bitrate from audio; include audio and operational margin when planning total transfer. If the quota is tight, reduce the bitrate to a level your allowance can support, while balancing the resulting picture quality. Lowering resolution alone does not reduce transfer if you keep the same bitrate.

Check the VPS’s actual bandwidth limits

A headline such as “1 Gbps” describes a port or link capability, not necessarily the amount of monthly data included. A plan may have a fast uplink and a small transfer quota, or a larger quota followed by throttling. Compare the limits that matter to a continuous outbound stream:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Included monthly outbound transfer, and whether inbound traffic also counts.
  • What happens at the limit: throttling, suspension, overage charges or a hard stop.
  • Sustained network rate, not only the advertised port speed.
  • Actual server location and route stability to YouTube’s ingest. A service marketed for India may host the VPS elsewhere.
  • CPU and RAM for the chosen encoding method, plus disk and operating-system support for your media and FFmpeg build.
  • Renewal cost, taxes, and any fair-use or resource policy behind “unmetered” claims.

Provider listings illustrate why checking the quota matters. VPSWala’s catalogue, reviewed 21 August 2026, lists 50 GB transfer for VPS 1 and 100 GB for VPS 2, with resources and prices shown in INR. OVHcloud’s Asia-Pacific VPS page lists a 500 GB monthly quota for VPS-1 and says traffic beyond the quota is capped at 10 Mbps. These are provider-published terms, not independent network tests; confirm the current plan, location and conditions directly with the provider. CloudPe advertises zero egress fees and an India-hosted VPS beginning at ₹930/month on its page, but that listing does not establish the quota, route or compute performance suitable for your stream. Confirm those terms, taxes and renewal details before buying. See the provider examples at VPSWala, OVHcloud and CloudPe.

Prepare FFmpeg and the YouTube stream

  1. Install and inspect FFmpeg. Use a trusted package or release source. Run ffmpeg -version to record the installed version and ffmpeg -encoders to check which encoders are available. Builds and codec support differ across operating systems and repositories.
  2. Identify the input and playback behavior. For a prerecorded file or playlist, FFmpeg must send media in real time rather than upload it as fast as possible. Use stream copy only when the existing codecs, timestamps and container work for the intended output. Otherwise, transcode; encoding in real time needs enough CPU for the selected codec and settings.
  3. Set a quota-aware output target. Choose codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate using YouTube’s current table and the monthly calculation above. Choose CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; for example, a two-second GOP is typically 60 frames at 30 fps or 50 frames at 25 fps. Encoder options vary, so confirm how your selected encoder interprets GOP settings.
  4. Get the ingest details from YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and use the ingest URL and stream key it provides. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection through to Google’s servers. Use the current ingest details rather than copying a key from an old setup. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and stream-key guidance.
  5. Protect the key. Treat the stream key as a secret. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot or tutorial, and avoid exposing it through shell history, scripts readable by other users or public logs. Use the VPS’s appropriate secret-handling method and limit who can access the account and process information.
  6. Test and monitor. Start with a private or unlisted test using representative motion and audio. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and adjust if it reports problems. YouTube advises testing before a live stream and checking upload bitrate with a speed test; a speed test does not replace checking the VPS route and YouTube’s own stream-health feedback.

Build the command around your input and encoder

There is no single FFmpeg command that fits every VPS, input and build. The official FFmpeg documentation describes the available options; use the documentation for the specific encoder you have installed. Treat the outline below as a template, not as a tested command. Replace each placeholder, confirm encoder-specific syntax, and keep the actual key out of shared files and logs.

ffmpeg -re -i "INPUT_FILE"
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
  -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE -minrate VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize RATE_CONTROL_BUFFER
  -g GOP_FRAMES -keyint_min GOP_FRAMES -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"

This illustrates real-time pacing with -re, H.264 encoding, rate-control targets, a GOP setting, AAC audio and an RTMPS/FLV output. It is not universal: libx264 may not exist in your build; GOP and rate-control behavior can vary by encoder; source audio may need a different treatment; and the ingest URL format must match the value shown in Live Control Room. For a stream-copy workflow, only replace encoding options after verifying that the input’s codecs, timestamps and container are compatible. Do not blindly use stream copy on media that YouTube cannot ingest or that fails to play correctly.

Before using a command unattended, run it in a private test, confirm that FFmpeg is sending at playback speed, inspect YouTube’s stream health, and check the VPS’s transfer counter. Also arrange a way to restart the process after an error or reboot; a terminal session alone is not a persistence strategy. Keep any process manager or service configuration from exposing the stream key to other users.

Keep bandwidth use predictable while live

  • Choose the bitrate from the transfer budget first, then select the resolution and frame rate that make sense at that rate.
  • Check usage during the first hours of a stream and compare the provider’s meter with your estimate. Investigate if total traffic is higher than expected.
  • Account for every simultaneous stream and all other VPS traffic against the same quota when applicable.
  • Do not rely on an advertised port speed as proof of sustained throughput or a monthly allowance.
  • Plan what happens if the quota is exhausted; a cap or suspension can interrupt a stream even when FFmpeg is configured correctly.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
VPS quota is being consumed too quickly Bitrate or stream hours are higher than budgeted, multiple streams are running, or other traffic counts toward the quota. Recalculate from the actual bitrate and runtime, inspect provider usage, and lower bitrate or runtime while reserving headroom.
YouTube reports a weak or unstable connection The VPS route or sustained upload rate is insufficient, or the output bitrate is too high for the route. Check YouTube stream health, VPS network performance and provider limits; try a lower output bitrate and test again.
FFmpeg cannot find the encoder The installed build lacks the requested encoder. Check ffmpeg -encoders and use a supported encoder or a trusted build that includes the required one.
Stream starts but media plays too fast or ends unexpectedly Input pacing, timestamps, playlist handling or process supervision may be wrong. For file playback, verify real-time pacing and input behavior; test the full intended playlist flow and configure restart handling separately.
YouTube rejects the output or reports stream errors Unsupported codec/container settings, unsuitable keyframe interval, bitrate configuration or ingest details. Compare the output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance, verify the Live Control Room ingest URL and key, and test privately with stream-health feedback.
Stream stops when the quota is reached The provider throttles, suspends, bills overage or stops traffic at the allowance boundary. Check the plan’s stated cap behavior and usage; reduce rate or hours, or select a plan whose allowance and policy fit the intended schedule.

Or let it run in the cloud

If maintaining an FFmpeg process and VPS quota is more work than you want, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings or playlists. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops the media in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot uses one flat price at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not go live from a camera. See StreamNeo or start your free first day.
