You can play Doom in a browser without installing a local emulator or database. Open a hosted browser player: one route emulates the original DOS version with DOSBox, while another runs the UZDoom source port compiled to WebAssembly. The right choice depends on the player’s current availability, the game data it provides, and whether you need mobile play or saves that persist.
Choose a browser player
| Option | How it runs | Game data | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| js-dos Doom demo | Runs DOS software in a browser-based DOSBox runtime. | The example page loads a Doom archive and launches ./doom. |
The page labels its displayed version outdated and says it does not support mobile devices. Its availability and behavior can change. |
| doom.ws | The site says it runs UZDoom compiled to WebAssembly in the browser tab. | The site advertises Doom-family games and Freedoom as options. | These are the operator’s claims; independent compatibility, save persistence, and long-term availability are not established here. |
For the quickest attempt, open a hosted player and follow its on-page start instructions. You do not need to install a local DOS emulator when the hosted page provides the runtime. The two routes are technically different: DOSBox emulates a DOS environment, while a WebAssembly source port is compiled to run in the browser.
Play using the js-dos DOSBox demo
- Open the js-dos Doom demo in a desktop browser.
- Start the embedded game using the page’s player controls. The example loads
DOOM-@evilution.zipand launches./doom. - Use the keyboard controls listed on the page: arrow keys to move, W to use, S to fire, Space to turn speed on, Alt to toggle strafe, and A and D to strafe.
The demo page warns that its version is outdated and does not support mobile devices. Those caveats apply to this example, not necessarily to other browser Doom players.
Try the WebAssembly source-port route
doom.ws advertises a UZDoom-based player compiled to WebAssembly. Its site says visitors can play Doom-family games and Freedoom in a browser without an install, plugin, or account. Choose an available game on the site and use its in-page instructions; the details of game selection and controls may depend on what the service currently offers.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is not DOS emulation. UZDoom is a source port compiled for the browser, so it runs in the tab through WebAssembly rather than recreating a DOS environment. The site also advertises save states, but does not establish whether they survive closing the page or can be exported.
Understand game data, Doom, and Freedoom
The runtime and the game’s data are separate pieces. A DOS emulator or source port supplies the environment or engine; game data supplies the levels, graphics, sounds, and other content. The DOSBox Wiki explains that a doom.wad file may be copied from an installation of Doom or Ultimate Doom and used with a source port: DOSBox Wiki: Games.

Freedoom is another option: it is listed on doom.ws, and an example js-dos-based project says it uses Freedoom Phase 1 data. Check the current player’s instructions to confirm which data it provides and how it is used. Do not assume that a hosted commercial Doom archive is authorized for redistribution; the available information does not establish the rights-holder’s terms for third-party distribution.

Save behavior depends on the particular player. The js-dos DOSBox README says its default in-memory file system can lose saved games when the page closes. The doom.ws page advertises save states but does not specify their persistence or export behavior. If progress matters, check the player’s save instructions before relying on it, and avoid closing the tab until you know whether a save has been retained.

What to check if the player does not work
- The page will not start: Hosted players can change or become unavailable. Try the other browser route rather than assuming that a failure means Doom cannot run in a browser.
- You are on a phone or tablet: The cited js-dos demo specifically says it does not support mobile devices. That warning should not be generalized to all current browser players.
- The game launches but lacks expected content: Check whether the player supplies game data or expects a compatible data file such as
doom.wad. - You cannot resume after closing the page: The js-dos DOSBox build uses in-memory storage by default, and the doom.ws page does not establish how long its advertised save states persist.
