You can keep church sermon recordings live on YouTube by running an encoder on an Amazon Lightsail Linux VPS and sending its output to YouTube Live with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The VPS can run while your church computers are off, but it is not a set-and-forget guarantee: you must plan for transfer charges, supervise the encoder, protect the stream key, and clear rights to every video and audio track.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified, at least 16 years old under YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility guidance, and free of live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Sermon video files or a playlist of recordings, stored where the VPS encoder can access them.
- An Amazon Lightsail Linux instance with sufficient compute, memory, disk capacity, and monthly transfer for your chosen encoding method and stream settings.
- An encoder that can send a continuous feed to YouTube using RTMPS, plus a way to supervise and restart the encoder if it exits.
- Permission to broadcast and archive the complete recordings, including any music, performances, images, or other third-party material.
Plan the program and confirm rights
Choose what viewers will see
Decide whether the channel will repeat one sermon, rotate through a playlist, or follow scheduled blocks. Check how the encoder handles the end of a file and the transition to the next item. Keep the original recordings backed up separately; a continuous YouTube feed is not a dependable substitute for your media archive.
Clear video and audio
YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the provider to hold the necessary rights for live and archived content, explicitly including music licensing. A church’s permission to show a recording in person does not by itself establish that it may be broadcast online. Confirm rights for sermon recordings, music, performances, slides, and other material in the stream. See YouTube’s terms.

Enable YouTube Live and create a stream
- Sign in to the church’s YouTube channel and complete channel verification if required.
- Enable live streaming early enough to allow for first-time activation, which YouTube says can take up to 24 hours.
- Open YouTube Studio, enter the Live Control Room, and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder’s YouTube connection settings. Treat the stream key like a password: store it securely, do not publish it, and do not include it in screenshots or public commands.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream first. Check the preview, sound, picture, and YouTube’s stream-health indicators before inviting viewers.
YouTube documents this encoder workflow in its setup guide for live streaming with an encoder. YouTube’s guide does not prescribe a particular FFmpeg command, playlist utility, Lightsail size, or process supervisor; those choices depend on your files and deployment.

Choose a starting video configuration
Use a resolution and bitrate that match the source recordings and that your encoder and VPS can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingestion. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, recommends constant bitrate encoding (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. H.264 is a straightforward compatibility baseline when your encoder supports it.

These are video bitrate figures from YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance; configure audio separately according to the encoder and current YouTube guidance. YouTube transcodes live input to multiple playback formats, so your VPS upload bitrate is not the same as each viewer’s playback bitrate. Confirm the current recommendations and stream-health readout before going live.

Set up the Lightsail VPS
Select the instance based on measured needs
Choose a Linux instance based on whether your workflow relays an already encoded file or performs CPU-intensive encoding, as well as the media library’s disk requirements. AWS does not identify one universally suitable Lightsail bundle for this workload. Test the actual encoder and files, then monitor CPU, memory, storage, and stream stability rather than assuming a small instance will handle every job.
AWS documentation accessed in 2026 lists a Linux/Unix Nano public IPv4 bundle at $5 per month with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB storage, and 1 TB of monthly transfer. That is a documented example, not a recommendation or guarantee of capacity; availability, price, and bundles can vary by region and change. Check the current Lightsail instance bundles before choosing.

Network access and stable addressing
The VPS sends the stream outbound to YouTube. Configure only the inbound firewall access needed for administration; the Lightsail firewall permits outbound traffic. If you need a stable public address after stopping and starting the instance, AWS says an attached static IP has no charge. Review Lightsail networking and firewall guidance.
Keep the encoder running and observable
Place the authorized media where the encoder can read it, secure the stream key, and run the encoder under a process supervision or restart mechanism suitable for your Linux distribution. Configure the selected encoder to send the video and audio to YouTube’s server URL over RTMPS, with the keyframe and bitrate settings chosen above. Verify that the VPS can sustain the outgoing bitrate, and monitor the encoder process, disk space, transfer usage, and YouTube stream health. Decide in advance what viewers should see if the encoder or instance stops.

Estimate Lightsail transfer before committing
Continuous streaming can use substantial outbound transfer. A useful estimate in decimal gigabytes is:
Monthly upload (GB) ≈ bitrate (megabits/second) × active seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000

At an assumed constant 5 Mbps for 30 days, the encoder sends about 1,620 GB before overhead; at 10 Mbps, about 3,240 GB. These are arithmetic estimates, not AWS usage statistics. Actual usage depends on bitrate and uptime.
Lightsail bundles include region-specific monthly transfer allowances. AWS counts inbound and outbound data toward the allowance; qualifying outbound transfer above it may incur a regional fee. Compare your estimate with the current allowance and overage terms for the specific region and plan in AWS’s bundle documentation and Lightsail’s data-transfer guidance. Do not assume a sample bundle’s transfer allowance applies to every location or plan generation.
Understand YouTube archives and continuous events
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a 24/7 event being saved as one complete video. If preserving each sermon matters, keep source files independently and consider publishing individual recordings separately. A continuous broadcast and a usable on-demand archive are separate publishing needs.

YouTube will not accept the stream
- Possible cause: Live streaming is not enabled, the channel has a restriction, or the wrong server URL or key is configured.
- Fix: Check eligibility and activation in YouTube Studio, then copy the stream details again. If you have exposed the key, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
The preview buffers or stream health is poor
- Possible cause: The VPS cannot sustain the outgoing bitrate, the source or encoder is unstable, or the instance is under resource pressure.
- Fix: Review YouTube’s stream-health indicators and VPS CPU, memory, and network behavior. Reduce output resolution or bitrate to a sustainable setting and test again; verify RTMPS and the encoder’s CBR and keyframe settings.
The feed stops when nobody is logged in
- Possible cause: The encoder was started in an interactive session and was not supervised after that session ended.
- Fix: Run it under an appropriate service manager or process supervisor, configure restart behavior, and confirm recovery with a controlled test. A VPS does not automatically restart an encoder process merely because the server is online.
The feed stops at a file boundary
- Possible cause: The encoder’s playlist or looping behavior is not configured for the file format or list being used.
- Fix: Test transitions through the full playlist, including the last-to-first transition, and check audio and video continuity before using it for a public event.
Transfer charges or storage limits are higher than expected
- Possible cause: Continuous bitrate-based traffic exceeded the plan allowance, or the source library needs more disk than the instance provides.
- Fix: Recalculate transfer from the actual output bitrate and uptime, compare it with the region’s current plan terms, and measure media storage requirements before expanding the library.
