Run Argos visual checks in a Docker container by using the official Microsoft Playwright image with the same version as your project’s Playwright package, installing dependencies from the lockfile, and passing ARGOS_TOKEN as a CI secret. Configure the Argos Playwright reporter and capture a named, deterministic page state with argosScreenshot. Docker standardizes the browser and operating-system environment; it does not by itself prevent version mismatches, dynamic-page flakiness, or secret leaks.
Set up a version-matched Playwright container
The official Playwright image includes browser binaries and their operating-system dependencies, but it does not install your project’s Playwright package. Install your locked project dependencies in the job, and keep the image tag aligned with the Playwright version declared by your project. A mismatch can leave Playwright unable to find the browser executable it expects. Microsoft recommends pinning the image to a specific version rather than relying on a moving tag: Playwright Docker documentation.
As of October 3, 2026, the documentation lists Playwright v1.63.0 tags including noble and jammy. These are point-in-time examples, not a recommendation to upgrade blindly; use the tag matching your installed package and re-check available tags when updating.
GitHub Actions example
This illustrative job runs tests inside the container, installs dependencies with npm ci, and makes the Argos token available only to the test step. Confirm the action version and container syntax against your CI provider and repository setup.

Configure the Argos reporter and capture a page
Install and configure the Argos Playwright integration as described in the Argos Playwright guide. The reporter can be enabled for CI runs while keeping a local reporter for developer runs:
import { defineConfig } from "@playwright/test";
export default defineConfig({
reporter: [
process.env.CI ? ["dot"] : ["list"],
["@argos-ci/playwright/reporter", { uploadToArgos: !!process.env.CI }],
],
});
Navigate to the state you intend to compare, then call argosScreenshot(page, "name") with a stable name:

import { argosScreenshot } from "@argos-ci/playwright";
import { test } from "@playwright/test";
test("homepage visual", async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto("http://localhost:3000/");
await argosScreenshot(page, "homepage");
});
The example assumes the application is available at http://localhost:3000/. Start the application before the test command or change the test URL to a deployed preview address. Argos’s helper waits for fonts, images, and network idle and hides carets and scrollbars; tests still need deterministic data, interactions, and an appropriate target state.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Make the CI environment reliable
Make the app reachable and the inputs repeatable
- Start the application as part of the CI job before Playwright runs, or target a deployment preview. Argos’s Vercel Preview guide shows the preview-URL approach.
- Install from the lockfile and run tests in the same pinned container used for the CI check. This reduces drift in browser, operating-system libraries, and fonts.
- Wait for the meaningful page state and control changing data, animations, timestamps, and other dynamic content. Mask or hide genuinely variable regions where appropriate.
- Keep functional assertions in Playwright tests; visual capture is a separate check of rendered appearance.
Account for Docker runtime settings
Playwright recommends --ipc=host for Chromium because a small default shared-memory allocation can contribute to browser crashes, and recommends Docker’s --init option to help handle PID 1 and avoid zombie processes. How to provide these settings depends on the CI runner. The Playwright image runs as root by default, which disables Chromium’s sandbox. Playwright says that can be acceptable for trusted end-to-end tests; for untrusted browsing or scraping, use a separate user and suitable seccomp configuration. The project cautions that its image is intended for testing and development, not visiting untrusted websites (Playwright Docker documentation).
Choose between Argos and native Playwright snapshots
Native Playwright screenshots and Argos solve related but different baseline-management problems. Argos describes its workflow and comparison with native screenshots in its Playwright guide.

| Decision | Native Playwright screenshots | Playwright capture with Argos |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline storage | Screenshot files in Git | Hosted Argos build associated with Git history |
| Review and updates | Run npx playwright test --update-snapshots in a controlled environment and inspect changed files |
Review and approve visual differences through the pull-request workflow |
| Workflow fit | Useful for a small suite where version-controlled files and direct local review are sufficient | Useful when a team wants centralized review and less baseline-file maintenance |
For native snapshots, generate and update baselines in the same Docker environment used in CI; operating systems, browser versions, fonts, and antialiasing can change rendered pixels. With either workflow, inspect visual changes before accepting them. For a cost decision about Argos, check its current plan details directly; pricing is not needed to configure this Docker workflow.
Troubleshoot common Docker visual-test failures
Playwright cannot find a browser executable
Check that the container image’s Playwright version matches the package version installed from the lockfile. Also verify that the job actually installs project dependencies: the image supplies browser binaries and system libraries, not the project’s Playwright package.
Chromium crashes or exits unexpectedly
Where your runner permits, use Docker’s --ipc=host setting to avoid Chromium issues caused by limited shared memory. Consider --init for process cleanup. CI providers expose container options differently, so consult the provider’s job configuration rather than assuming these flags are accepted in the YAML example above.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The page is blank, unreachable, or captured too early
Confirm the server starts successfully before the test, that the URL resolves from inside the container, and that the app is ready before navigation or capture. For preview deployments, pass the actual preview URL. Add a wait for a meaningful selector or state when navigation alone does not mean the page is ready.
Screenshots differ between local and CI runs
Use the same pinned image and browser/package versions locally and in CI where possible. Keep native baselines generated in that environment; differences in OS rendering, installed fonts, and antialiasing can persist when environments differ.
Captures are flaky despite the Argos helper
The helper’s waits do not make changing application content deterministic. Stabilize fixtures and time-dependent data, wait for the intended interaction or selector, and hide or mask variable content when it is not part of the visual check.

The reporter uploads nothing or the token is rejected
Verify the reporter is enabled for the CI run, ARGOS_TOKEN is configured as a CI secret and exposed to the test step, and the secret is available to that event type. In particular, CI platforms may restrict secrets in pull requests originating from forks; follow the provider’s security rules rather than exposing the token to untrusted code.
Or skip the browser setup
For a website screenshot rather than a Playwright visual-regression test, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; see the API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers reporting the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
