You can run a radio-style YouTube Live stream from a modest PC by sending the computer’s finished audio output through an encoder such as OBS, paired with a simple, low-motion visual. Start with conservative settings and test the actual machine and upload connection: YouTube’s bitrate recommendations describe what to send, not whether a particular PC can encode it. Before broadcasting music, confirm that you have the necessary rights.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and free of live-streaming restrictions from the preceding 90 days; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. The current eligibility guidance also says creators must be at least 16 to livestream. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements and encoder setup guidance.
- A computer that can sustain your chosen encoder settings, plus a stable upload connection.
- An encoder such as OBS, and the stream URL and key for your YouTube event.
- A cleared audio program. Having a track available to play does not necessarily give you the rights to broadcast it on YouTube.
There is no universal minimum CPU specification that guarantees a PC can livestream. OBS says processor requirements depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; meeting its compatibility requirements does not guarantee streaming capacity. Treat the workflow below as a testable starting point, not a promise that any low-power machine will work. See OBS system requirements.
Set up a YouTube Live encoder stream
- Check access and enable livestreaming. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live event. If this is your channel’s first encoder stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Resolve any account restrictions before configuring OBS.
- Copy the event’s connection details. In the event’s Live Control Room, find the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, then use the supplied connection details if the service flow requests them. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send video to your event.
- Choose RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. In OBS, use the YouTube service/RTMPS option rather than constructing a server URL manually. RTMPS encrypts the connection to YouTube; the YouTube Developers guide describes RTMPS connections over port 443. See YouTube’s encoder settings and RTMPS ingestion guidance.
- Build a light scene. Add a station still image or other simple visual. Remove animated overlays, browser sources, transitions and effects you do not need. This is a practical way to limit rendering work, not a guarantee of a specific CPU reduction.
- Route the station audio. If the completed radio mix already plays on the computer, capture desktop or application audio in OBS and check its meters. If you need a presenter microphone or an external line-level source, connect compatible input equipment and select it as an audio source. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes external equipment such as microphones and preamps; it is optional when the finished audio is already on the PC.
- Configure a conservative output and test. Use YouTube’s settings below as ingest targets, then test with the real audio and scene. OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard can suggest initial settings, but it cannot guarantee that the computer will stay stable during a long session.
- Preview before going live. Start the encoder and confirm the feed appears in YouTube Live Control Room. Check audio, picture and stream health before starting the public broadcast.
Encoder settings for an audio-first stream
YouTube’s recommendations are what its ingest service expects; they are not measurements of PC workload. For a weak machine, begin below the 720p/30 target if necessary, then raise settings only after a representative test succeeds.

|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 is a straightforward baseline; YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1. | Encoder and hardware support vary. The codec choice does not establish that a low-power PC can encode reliably. |
| Resolution and frame rate | For an initial target, 720p at 30 fps if the PC and connection sustain it. | A still station image does not need high motion detail. Test a lower resolution or frame rate first on weaker hardware. |
| Video bitrate | For H.264 at 720p/30 fps, YouTube lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. | Those figures are YouTube ingest settings, not CPU estimates. Your upload must sustain the configured total bitrate. |
| Rate control | CBR (constant bitrate) is recommended. | Use a stable bitrate rather than allowing large swings during the broadcast. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. | Set this in the encoder’s output settings if it is not populated by the YouTube service profile. |
| Audio codec and format | AAC or MP3; stereo sample rate 44.1 kHz and recommended stereo bitrate 128 kbps. | Listen to the preview and check that the correct audio source is active and not clipping. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS recommended. | Prefer the encoder’s built-in YouTube/RTMPS service configuration. |
YouTube publishes these encoder settings at its live encoder settings page. A still visual may suit a radio stream, but test it with the selected encoder and actual machine rather than assuming low video complexity eliminates encoding load.

Keep music rights and YouTube checks in view
YouTube’s live-stream terms require the content provider to have the rights needed to use the material on Google services, including relevant music rights. A terrestrial radio broadcast, subscription-music account or “royalty-free” label alone does not establish that a track is cleared for your particular YouTube live use. Rights and licensing routes can depend on territory and the specific material. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and obtain the permissions that apply to your program.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects content, it may replace the live image with a placeholder and warn you; continued use can lead to interruption or termination. A license does not necessarily prevent this: YouTube says a rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask relevant rights holders to arrange allowlisting before you broadcast when required. Details are in YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
Plan long broadcasts as sessions
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived when eligible, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on very long streams. If replay matters, divide the station into planned sessions shorter than 12 hours, check that each restart works, and keep a local recording as a backup. See YouTube’s live-stream archive and DVR guidance.

Troubleshoot common low-power-PC problems
The preview stutters or OBS reports rendering or encoding lag
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate, then test again.
- Simplify the scene: use a still image and remove unneeded animated or browser-based sources.
- Try OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then verify stability in a representative test rather than assuming its suggestion will hold for a long session.
Dropped frames rise during the stream
OBS says rising dropped-frame counts can indicate an unstable connection or that the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Run a speed test, check the upload path, and lower the video bitrate if needed. YouTube recommends testing upload capacity and monitoring stream health; do not set bitrate based only on a headline speed that the connection cannot sustain consistently. See YouTube encoder settings and OBS dropped-frame troubleshooting.
YouTube receives video but the audio is missing or wrong
- Check that the intended desktop/application or microphone source is selected in OBS and that its audio meter moves.
- Confirm the source is not muted and that the operating-system output is routed to the device OBS is capturing.
- Listen to the Live Control Room preview before starting the public stream.
The stream key does not connect
Confirm that OBS is using the correct YouTube event, RTMPS service and current stream key. Copy the key from that event’s Live Control Room again if needed, and keep it private. If livestreaming was only just enabled, activation may still be pending for up to 24 hours.

The live image is interrupted after music starts
Do not assume the track is cleared because it is licensed or available through another service. Review the rights for the YouTube broadcast and contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting. YouTube may interrupt a live stream when it detects third-party content and the channel is not allowlisted.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use OBS for a YouTube radio stream without a webcam?
Yes. For a radio-style broadcast, a simple station image can serve as the visual while OBS sends the audio, provided the account, encoder and audio setup are configured correctly.
Do I need a USB audio interface?
Not if the finished radio audio already plays on the PC and can be captured by the encoder. External input hardware is only needed for sources such as a presenter microphone or line-level equipment.
