For a sequence of prerecorded coaching classes, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source: install VLC, add the approved video files in the intended order, leave Shuffle off, and enable Loop Playlist only if the program should repeat. Connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then test the full sequence and preview before going public.

Before you set up the stream

Confirm channel eligibility

YouTube says encoder streaming requires an eligible channel. Its general live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and free of live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and that streamers must be at least 16. Check the current requirements for your channel in YouTube’s live-streaming help.

Get permission for every part of the recording

Before broadcasting, confirm that you are authorized to stream the recordings and that permission covers the instructors, slides, music, and any other material included. Having a copy of a class recording does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. The applicable rights and legal requirements depend on the material and location; obtain appropriate authorization rather than assuming the institute controls every contributor’s rights.

Prepare an ordered run sheet

Put the approved class videos in a clearly named folder. Confirm that each file plays locally and its audio is audible. Write down the intended order, opening, breaks, and ending so the OBS playlist and scene changes match the planned program.

  • NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
  • UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

Choose the right OBS source

OBS source Best for What to know
VLC Video Source A playlist of multiple local video files Supports playlist controls such as Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Media Source One file at a time, such as a single class, title card, or break screen Simpler for an individual video and includes loop and restart playback controls. OBS documents it for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

OBS describes VLC Video Source as the playlist-capable option: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” See the OBS Media Sources guide and its sources overview.

Build the playlist and scenes in OBS

  1. Install VLC with the matching architecture. Install VLC before opening or configuring the VLC Video Source. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC.
  2. Create a scene for the opening. In OBS, add a scene for the title or introduction. Keeping this separate prevents the first class from appearing before you intend to start the program.
  3. Create the class-playlist scene. Add another scene, choose Sources > + > VLC Video Source, and add the approved files in the run-sheet order. If VLC Video Source is missing, check that VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS.
  4. Set playback behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a planned curriculum sequence. Turn on Loop Playlist only when the sequence should start over automatically after the last file; leave it off for a one-time event. Review the source’s visibility behavior so playback behaves as intended when the scene is not visible.
  5. Create an ending or holding scene. Use a separate scene for the scheduled end or a holding screen rather than letting the next class appear unexpectedly.
  6. Choose a simple transition. Use a Fade or Cut between the opening, playlist, and ending scenes. OBS scenes can combine sources and use transitions; see the OBS sources guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream. Scheduling ahead can provide a watch page viewers can find in advance.
  2. Copy the stream URL and key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the connection details provided in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder live-streaming setup guidance explains the URL and key workflow.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if it is exposed.
  4. Check ingest settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on your desired output and the upload connection available. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance rather than copying a bitrate without checking the applicable resolution and bandwidth requirements.

Test the complete program before going public

  1. Start OBS and check that the correct opening scene is showing.
  2. Run the playlist from beginning to end, checking file order, audio, transitions, breaks, and whether the next class starts when expected.
  3. Start the encoder connection early enough to inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before starting the public event.
  4. Verify that the scheduled event and its watch page are accessible as intended, then start the live stream when ready.
  5. Monitor the stream for audio and video quality while it is live. YouTube advises streamers to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” See its live-streaming tips.

Keep the upload connection stable

The computer’s upload connection needs to sustain the stream’s chosen bitrate reliably. Leave bandwidth headroom instead of planning to use all available upload capacity; network disruption can interrupt an encoder stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers stream health and testing.

Choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet based on the connection’s measured stability and capacity. If Wi-Fi is unreliable and both the computer and router support wired networking, Ethernet is an optional way to address that problem—not a required upgrade. A cable category alone does not guarantee a particular internet speed.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
VLC Video Source is not available in OBS VLC is missing or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC, matching 64-bit VLC to 64-bit OBS, then reopen OBS and check Sources again.
Classes play in an unexpected order Shuffle is enabled or the playlist order does not match the run sheet. Turn off Shuffle Playlist and review the file order in the VLC source.
The program repeats when it should end Loop Playlist is enabled. Disable Loop Playlist for a one-time event and use the ending scene at the end of the run.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview The stream URL or key may be incorrect, or the encoder has not connected. Compare OBS’s stream settings with the details in Live Control Room, reconnect, and wait for the preview before starting the event.
Video or audio quality drops, or the stream disconnects The upload connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. Check YouTube’s stream health, confirm the upload capacity, leave more bandwidth headroom, and test again. Consider Ethernet only if it can resolve an actual Wi-Fi stability issue.
A class is audible but not visible, or playback behaves oddly after changing scenes The source’s visibility and playback behavior may not match the scene workflow. Review the VLC source’s visibility behavior and test scene changes with the full playlist before the live event.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep prerecorded classes playing on YouTube without leaving a home computer online, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
