To run a local MCP server on Windows, install the server and its required runtime, then configure an MCP client to launch the server as a child process. For a typical local setup, the client and server communicate over standard input and output (stdio). There is no universal launch command: use the command and arguments documented for the particular server you choose.
How a local MCP server runs
A local MCP server is usually a program that a host or client, such as Claude Desktop or Visual Studio Code, starts as a child process. With stdio transport, the client sends protocol messages to the process through standard input and reads protocol messages from standard output. The server is not automatically a Windows service; the client manages its process. The MCP build guide describes server-specific launch patterns, and VS Code’s MCP reference identifies stdio as the most common transport for locally run servers.
The setup therefore has two distinct parts: install and launch the server, then tell the client how to start it. The runtime and command might involve uv for Python, node for TypeScript or JavaScript, dotnet, or a compiled executable. Follow the selected server’s installation instructions rather than copying an unrelated example.
Before you configure Windows
- Choose the MCP server and read its official Windows installation and launch instructions.
- Install any required runtime or package manager, such as the one specified by the server.
- Identify the client that will launch the server. Its configuration format and location determine the next steps.
- Collect the exact executable, arguments, working directory, and environment variables the server needs.
Test the documented command in a terminal first if the server’s instructions recommend it. A command that works in an interactive terminal may still fail when launched by a desktop client: the client is a separate process and might not share the terminal’s PATH or environment variables.

Configure Claude Desktop on Windows
The Windows configuration path documented by the MCP build guide and the MCP Python SDK guide is %APPDATA%Claudeclaude_desktop_config.json. In a Windows shell, %APPDATA% resolves to the user’s roaming application-data directory. Create or edit that JSON file, add the server under mcpServers, save it, and fully restart Claude Desktop to reload the configuration.
Use the command and arguments for your server
This is a configuration shape, not a ready-to-run server command. Replace the example values with the executable and arguments in your server’s official instructions:

}Use absolute paths when required. In JSON, Windows paths can use doubled backslashes, such as C:\Users\you\project\server.js, or forward slashes, such as C:/Users/you/project/server.js. A single unescaped backslash can make the JSON invalid or alter a path.
Python server launched with uv
The Python SDK guide describes using uv to run a server. Use the specific command and arguments documented for your server; do not assume every Python server has the same entry point. If Claude Desktop cannot find uv, configure the full path to its executable. Also provide any required environment variables through the client configuration or the documented launch mechanism: the desktop host starts its own process, so variables set only in an interactive shell are not necessarily available to it. Keep credentials out of public configuration examples and use the host’s supported secret-handling method.

TypeScript or other runtimes
The MCP build guide shows a Node command with a built JavaScript entry point as one launch pattern. A different server might call dotnet run or start a compiled executable instead. Set command to the actual runtime or executable and put its required flags and entry point in args, in the order the server’s instructions specify.
Configure another Windows client
Configuration belongs to the client, not to MCP as a universal Windows setting. VS Code documents local stdio servers with a command, arguments, and optional working directory, environment variables, and environment file. Its configuration location and schema differ from Claude Desktop’s. Follow the current instructions in the VS Code MCP reference rather than copying Claude’s JSON path or assuming its schema applies.
VS Code also documents remote HTTP server configuration. That is a different arrangement from a local stdio process: the client connects to a server over HTTP rather than launching that local process. Which route fits depends on where the server runs and how its particular setup supplies credentials and controls access.
Windows on-device agent registry is a separate route
Microsoft documents an on-device agent registry (ODR) for registering MCP servers with Windows agents. Its overview describes packaged-app and manual registration, and says ODR-accessed servers run in an agent session with access restricted to approved resources by default. This is a Windows agent integration, not a prerequisite for ordinary Claude Desktop or VS Code configuration. Microsoft notes that some information on the overview may concern prerelease products, so check its current release status and applicability before relying on ODR for a particular Windows setup: Windows on-device agent registry overview.

Verify the connection and troubleshoot failures
The server does not appear in the client
- Validate the configuration file as JSON. Check braces, commas, quotation marks, and escaped backslashes.
- Confirm that command paths and server entry-point paths are absolute where required and point to files that exist.
- Make sure the host process can locate the executable. If a runtime is found in your terminal but not in the client, use its full path.
- Fully restart the client after changing its configuration. The MCP build guide specifically recommends checking syntax and paths, then restarting the host.
The command works in a terminal but fails in the client
The client launches a distinct process. Check its configured executable path, working directory if the client supports one, and required environment variables. Do not assume the host inherits a PATH change or a variable that exists only in your interactive shell. For Claude Desktop, the Python SDK guide documents the Windows logs directory as %APPDATA%Claudelogs; look for general MCP logs and per-server stderr logs. The host’s current developer or log interface may also help, since client UI details can change.
The process starts, then the connection breaks
For stdio transport, standard output is reserved for protocol traffic. Ordinary diagnostic output on stdout can corrupt the JSON-RPC messages and break the connection. The official MCP build guide explicitly warns against using console.log() for stdio servers because it writes to stdout by default. Send diagnostics to stderr instead, then inspect the client’s logs.
The process connects but expected tools are missing
Use the client’s developer, connector, or server interface to check whether it lists the server and exposes its tools. Treat validation as client-specific: a Windows ODR test does not confirm that the same server is correctly configured in Claude Desktop or VS Code.

Does running an MCP server on Windows mean installing a Windows service?
No. In the local stdio pattern, the MCP client starts the server as a child process; it is not automatically installed as a Windows service.
Can I use Claude Desktop’s configuration file with VS Code?
No. The clients use different configuration locations and formats. Follow the current setup documentation for the client that will connect to the server.
