You can run an Indian classical music radio-style stream on YouTube by playing authorized audio or video files from a playlist in OBS Studio and sending the output to YouTube Live. First, clear the music rights: a track being available online or labelled “free” does not automatically give you permission to broadcast it. This guide assumes “playlist” means files on your computer, not an existing YouTube playlist.

What “from a playlist” means here

The documented workflow is to assemble local media files in OBS, loop them, and send the encoded output to YouTube through Live Control Room. A playlist by itself is not a live stream. The official instructions cited here do not establish that an existing YouTube playlist can be directly rebroadcast, or that access to listen to its tracks grants broadcast rights. Do not download and rebroadcast tracks unless you have the necessary rights.

Clear the music rights before setting up the stream

Use recordings you made, public-domain recordings whose relevant rights you have checked, or recordings for which you have permission covering the planned live stream, territories, and any saved archive. YouTube says music is safe to use when it is public domain or you have permission; a description calling a track “free” does not prevent a Content ID claim. See YouTube’s tips to find safe music.

YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”

If a rights holder has licensed the music for your use but uses Content ID, ask them to add your channel to their allowlist. Permission and an allowlist address different issues: you need the rights, and YouTube may also need the channel allowlisted to prevent automated matching from interrupting the stream.

Check that your channel can livestream

YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. The page also states that streamers must be at least 16. Check YouTube Studio for your channel’s current eligibility and any account-specific restriction before preparing a long broadcast.

Set up the playlist and YouTube broadcast

  1. Prepare the media. Put the cleared audio or video files you intend to use somewhere accessible on the computer running OBS. Keep a record of the permissions and any requirements from the rights holder.
  2. Make a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or manage a live stream. YouTube lists an encoder as one way to send a live broadcast. The exact controls can change, so follow the current on-screen setup for your channel.
  3. Copy the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast into OBS’s stream settings. A stream key is a credential: do not share it, publish it, or reuse it where someone else could start streaming to your channel.
  4. Add the OBS source. For one file, add a Media Source and select the recording, then enable Loop. For multiple files, add a VLC Video source, add the local files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. If VLC Video is missing, install VLC and reopen OBS.
  5. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then check the Live Control Room preview before making the broadcast public. Confirm the expected image or audio is present, the audio is audible and not unintentionally muted, and the stream is accessible as intended.
  6. Check upload headroom. YouTube’s live-streaming tips and settings recommend keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the chosen bitrate. Check the actual outbound connection available to the streaming computer rather than relying only on the internet plan’s advertised speed.
  7. Go live and monitor it. Once the preview and audio are right, start or confirm the public broadcast in Live Control Room. Keep an eye on YouTube notices and the OBS connection while it runs.

Monitor for copyright interruptions

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. Its guidance on copyright issues with live streams says it may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate the broadcast. If that happens, check the notice in Live Control Room and contact the rights holder if the music is licensed. Ask them to allowlist your channel through Content ID; do not assume that describing a track as royalty-free or disputing a claim after the fact will keep a live broadcast running.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

  • OBS has no VLC Video source: VLC is a prerequisite for that source. Install VLC, then restart OBS and check the source list again.
  • The playlist stops after one pass: Check the source’s repeat control: Media Source uses Loop for a single file, while VLC Video uses Loop Playlist for a sequence.
  • YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Confirm that OBS has the correct stream URL and stream key for the selected Live Control Room broadcast. Check that streaming is enabled for the channel and that no account restriction is preventing it.
  • The preview is blank or the wrong recording plays: Check the selected source and file paths in OBS, then restart the encoder and wait for the preview to update before going public.
  • The audio is missing or too quiet: Listen to the Live Control Room preview and inspect OBS’s audio mixer for the playlist source. Correct the source or mixer state before starting a public broadcast.
  • The stream buffers or drops: Check the streaming computer’s available upload capacity and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the chosen bitrate. A connection that cannot sustain the selected bitrate can undermine the stream even if the playlist itself plays correctly.
  • YouTube interrupts the broadcast for a music match: Review the live notice. If the use is licensed, ask the rights holder to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist; otherwise, stop using the matched recording and replace it with material you can broadcast.
