You can keep an FFmpeg stream running through a scheduled power cut only if backup power covers the whole streaming path—not just the Raspberry Pi—and the internet connection remains available. First configure and test FFmpeg against YouTube Live, then measure the power draw of the Pi, video source and network equipment together to choose backup power for the outage you need to cover. There is no reliable one-size-fits-all UPS capacity: the Pi model, connected devices, local outage duration and ISP setup all matter.
What must stay online during a power cut?
A stream can fail even while the Pi remains powered. List every device and service between the video source and YouTube, and check each one separately:
- The Raspberry Pi and its boot medium.
- The camera, capture device, microphone or other powered source, if used.
- The router and modem or fiber ONT; include a required switch or PoE equipment.
- The internet service itself. A powered router does not guarantee that the ISP link or building-level equipment stays online.
Back up each locally powered component that is necessary, and verify separately whether your ISP connection continues during an outage. Mobile tethering is only a contingency if coverage, data allowance, upload stability and latency have been tested at the installation site.

Prepare the Raspberry Pi and YouTube stream
Check the board, OS and video source
Identify the exact Pi model, operating system, video and audio inputs, and whether the source needs encoding or can be copied in its existing format. FFmpeg input options depend on the camera or capture device, so there is no universal command for every setup. Make sure the Pi boots reliably from its installed medium and has a working network connection before configuring a stream.

Raspberry Pi’s current power guidance recommends 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5 and Pi 500; 5 V at 3 A for Pi 4 Model B and Pi 400; and 5 V at 2.5 A for the listed Pi 1, 2, 3 and Zero models. These are supply recommendations, not measurements of a Pi’s consumption while encoding. Raspberry Pi advises: “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply suitable for the Raspberry Pi model you’re powering.” Its documentation also notes that the voltage requirement is measured at the plug, so cable voltage loss matters, especially with removable cables. Raspberry Pi: Getting started
Create the live event and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event. Keep the key private; do not expose it in a public script, screenshot or shell history.
- Prefer the RTMPS endpoint if your installed FFmpeg build supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Store credentials in a protected environment or service configuration file with suitably restricted permissions.
RTMP publishing URLs use protocol-specific components, and packaged FFmpeg builds do not all include the same support. Check your local build before relying on an endpoint: ffmpeg -protocols and ffmpeg -encoders. Consult FFmpeg’s protocol documentation for RTMP URL and publishing syntax, and YouTube’s RTMPS instructions for the endpoint and key workflow. YouTube suggests trying port 443 for certain SSL errors only where the URL or configuration calls for it; do not change ports blindly.
Choose FFmpeg settings for your source and upload
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 or AV1, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval recommendation, with four seconds as the maximum. H.264 is a documented choice, but that does not mean every Pi can encode every resolution and frame rate smoothly. Test the exact board, input and FFmpeg build under sustained load.

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include these ingest bitrates:
| Output setting | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise of upload capacity at your location. Test sustained upload speed on the actual connection, leave headroom for variation and account for audio and network overhead. Choose a resolution and bitrate the Pi can encode and the connection can reliably carry. YouTube’s guidance is to “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Illustrative command for looping a video file
The following is a pattern to adapt for a file input, not a universal Pi command. Replace the input, credentials, frame rate and bitrate with values validated for your setup:

-rereads a file in real time; it is generally not needed for a source that is already live.-stream_loop -1repeats the file indefinitely. Remove it if you do not want a loop.- Set
-gand-keyint_minfor roughly two seconds per GOP: for example, 50 frames at 25 fps or 60 frames at 30 fps. - Adjust bitrate and output resolution to the chosen YouTube settings and tested upload. The example’s bitrate is not a recommendation for every connection or resolution.
- For a camera or capture device, substitute its input and device-specific options. Confirm your FFmpeg build’s output protocol and the endpoint format for the selected YouTube event before using real credentials.
A hardware H.264 encoder may reduce CPU use where the selected board, FFmpeg build and input workflow support it. Verify that support locally and run a sustained test; do not assume a particular Pi will achieve a target frame rate.
Test the complete setup before an outage
- Use an unlisted or private test arrangement and include the actual video and audio source.
- Watch FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream health. Check for dropped frames, upload instability, audio issues and encoder errors.
- Monitor CPU temperature and throttling, and confirm the Pi can sustain the chosen settings for the intended duration.
- Run the complete system on its proposed backup power under load. Measure runtime with the Pi, source devices and network equipment powered as they will be during a real outage.
- Test a network interruption and power restoration. Confirm whether FFmpeg reconnects, whether the same YouTube event can continue, whether the service starts after reboot and whether YouTube requires a manual restart.
- Only after the manual command works, run FFmpeg under a supervisor configured to restart after transient failure without entering a rapid restart loop. Keep logs bounded and protect the stream key.
Choose backup power for your Pi, network and outage
Scheduled power cuts do not follow one national timetable. Check current notices from your local distribution company and plan for the longest credible interruption in your locality, with reserve. The exact outage duration, ISP behavior and equipment load are location- and setup-specific.

Start with a load list and measure the complete system’s draw. Then compare a Pi-focused 5 V UPS or HAT with a conventional AC UPS. These are categories, not recommendations for particular models:
| Consideration | Pi-focused 5 V UPS or HAT | Conventional AC UPS |
|---|---|---|
| Typical fit | May suit a Pi-only load when its output and connectors meet the exact board’s requirements. | May be more convenient when the router, ONT and multiple power adapters also need backup. |
| Output compatibility | Check voltage, current, connector and model support against the Pi and attached devices. | Check the UPS output and that each powered adapter and device is suitable for it. |
| Runtime | Establish usable runtime at the measured full load; battery capacity alone is not a runtime guarantee. | Establish usable runtime with all intended equipment connected and under load. |
| Continuity and shutdown | Check transfer behavior and whether status or shutdown signaling works with the selected board. | Check switchover behavior, any shutdown signaling and compatibility with the Pi setup. |
| Ownership and installation | Check installation complexity, temperature limits, recharge time and battery replacement terms. | Check installation needs, temperature limits, recharge time and battery replacement terms. |
There is no universal UPS capacity or runtime that can be selected from the Pi model alone. Supply ratings describe the recommended power source, not actual FFmpeg consumption. Choose from measured full-system draw, required runtime, transfer behavior and the usable battery energy at that load. Test the chosen system for the intended duration before depending on it.

If the battery may run out before power returns, stop the stream and shut down while reserve remains. Raspberry Pi documents sudo poweroff as a command-line shutdown action. Do not assume a UPS can signal the Pi to shut down automatically unless that integration is supported and tested. After power returns, verify boot, network access, FFmpeg service startup and YouTube event state rather than assuming the stream resumed.

Troubleshooting common failures
- The Pi stays on, but the stream drops: The router, modem, ONT, switch, camera or ISP link may have failed. Check each link in the streaming path and power the required equipment; verify ISP continuity separately.
- FFmpeg cannot connect: Check the endpoint and key copied from the correct Live Control Room event, the local FFmpeg protocol support, network connectivity and whether the selected RTMPS URL is supported. For an SSL error, follow YouTube’s port guidance only if it applies to that URL or configuration.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames: Lower the bitrate or resolution, test sustained upload with headroom, and inspect FFmpeg logs and Pi load. A nominal speed test does not establish sustained capacity during the outage.
- The Pi throttles or misses frames: The selected encode may exceed the board’s sustained capability. Test a lower resolution or frame rate, confirm cooling and inspect whether a compatible hardware encoder is available in the chosen build.
- The UPS trips, reboots the Pi or runs out early: Recheck output compatibility, the load list, measured draw, transfer behavior and usable runtime at full load. Test with all intended equipment connected.
- FFmpeg reconnects but the YouTube stream does not resume: The event may require manual action or a fresh connection. Test recovery before relying on automatic restart, and check the event state in Live Control Room.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos live on YouTube during home power cuts, StreamNeo removes the home computer and home network from the streaming path: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream a camera feed. Your Pi and home internet do not need to stay on for that cloud stream.
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; one free day per account.
- Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. Plans differ by duration, not features.
Monthly pricing: $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
For an FFmpeg camera or live capture stream, use the Pi method above: StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not live camera input. Useful planning tools include the upload-time calculator, cloud vs. PC cost calculator and copyright safety checklist.
