To run an ambient music radio station on YouTube, build a playlist in an encoder such as OBS, pair it with a visual scene, and send the resulting audio-and-video feed to YouTube as a live broadcast. First enable live streaming on your channel, confirm you have the necessary music rights, then test the complete setup as an unlisted stream before going public. A looping playlist alone does not create a broadcast, and neither YouTube nor your encoder guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
What a looping YouTube music station needs
The playlist is the media input; an encoder turns it into a live audio/video feed that YouTube can broadcast. In OBS Studio, you can use a VLC Video source for a playlist or a Media Source for a single local file that repeats. Add a visual scene—such as cover art or an ambient background—alongside the audio source. YouTube describes 24/7 feeds as a supported broadcast use case, but that is not a promise that your equipment, connection, account, or stream will remain continuously available.
YouTube for Artists says encoder streaming offers more customization and control than streaming from a mobile device or webcam. Its Q2 2025 platform-wide figure says over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content; this is general audience context, not a forecast for an ambient music channel. Enable live streaming in advance
YouTube for Artists advises first-time creators to verify their account at least 24 hours before their first planned live stream. Verify the channel, then check the current YouTube Studio live workflow to confirm that live access is available before scheduling a launch. Do not leave the first access check until broadcast day.

Confirm rights for the exact use
Make sure you are authorized to use both the musical composition and the sound recording for a YouTube livestream in the intended territories. Clarify whether the grant covers monetization and an archived replay if you plan to retain one, and keep a copy of the agreement. Commissioned or original music can simplify the rights picture, but confirm the relevant rights are actually yours or granted to you. For licensed third-party recordings, check the license terms with the rights owner, label, or distributor.
A license does not necessarily prevent an automated interruption. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in another live broadcast. If a track is managed through Content ID, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its allowlist, and coordinate with the label or distributor as needed. Choose how the playlist repeats

These are workflow trade-offs, not guarantees of reliability. OBS documents both the looping Media Source and playlist-capable VLC Video source in its Media Sources guide, dated 2022-01-11.
Set up and test the broadcast
- Prepare the OBS scene. Add either a VLC Video source with your playlist or a Media Source with your single file. Add the visual element as another scene element. Check that the audio is audible and not clipping, that the image is framed as intended, and that the scene remains suitable throughout the broadcast.
- Create a YouTube live broadcast. In YouTube Studio, use the live workflow to create the broadcast and connect your encoder using the stream key and connection details provided there. Treat the stream key as a secret: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot. YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide is protocol guidance for encoder vendors; most creators following OBS’s normal YouTube workflow do not need to implement that low-level protocol themselves.
- Run an unlisted end-to-end test. YouTube for Artists advises: “Test your live stream in an unlisted stream before your go-live date, especially for high-production or high-investment events.” Start the encoder and check the actual audio level, visual, playlist transition, repeat behavior, connection stability, and any rights alerts in Studio.
- Go public only after the test passes. Start the public broadcast through the YouTube live workflow and monitor Studio for warnings or a stopped stream. Do not assume the OBS loop setting itself publishes anything to YouTube.
Plan for rights alerts and the replay
If YouTube identifies third-party content, check Studio and address the alert rather than assuming the stream will continue. A rights owner’s allowlist coordination may be needed even when you hold a license. If you retain an archive, review it after the stream completes: YouTube says Content ID claims on an archived live stream may be made after completion. Decide in advance whether keeping a replay is useful and whether your music permission covers it.
