You can send video from an Ubuntu 24.04 machine to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, but “always-on” depends on more than the command: YouTube must allow live streaming on your channel, the installed FFmpeg build must support your chosen encoder and output protocol, and the host and network must keep working. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; its guidance does not establish that one event can run indefinitely without intervention.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists both requirements: YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- An input, such as a video file, that you have the rights to stream.
- An Ubuntu 24.04 host with FFmpeg installed, sufficient capacity for the selected encoding settings, and reliable outbound internet.
- A YouTube Live Control Room stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
This guide covers a file-based SDR stream. Cameras, capture devices, network feeds, and HDR streams need input-specific commands or settings; do not assume the example below applies to them.
Prepare the YouTube live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the encoder setup.
- Keep the key out of public notes, shared scripts, and shell commands that may remain in shell history or appear in process listings. YouTube provides a reset option in the stream-key settings if the key is exposed. See YouTube Help: Manage your live stream settings.
- For a scheduled stream, start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room; use its go-live control as appropriate. YouTube’s setup guidance says starting an encoder creates the watch page. Check the current event workflow in YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
Check the FFmpeg build on Ubuntu 24.04
Do not assume every Ubuntu 24.04 FFmpeg package has identical codecs or protocols. Inspect the FFmpeg installed on your machine:

FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated for its newest revision and advises users of older releases to consult the documentation for their installed version: FFmpeg documentation. If your build lacks the encoder or protocol you need, use a suitable build or another available encoder, and verify its package-specific instructions before deploying it. This article does not establish which encoders or secure-protocol support are present in a particular Noble package build.
Send a file to YouTube Live
FFmpeg documents the basic real-time file-to-RTMP pattern as ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. The following is an illustrative H.264/AAC configuration, not a tested universal preset:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k
-maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -pix_fmt yuv420p
-g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv
'rtmp://INGEST_SERVER/live/STREAM_KEY'
Replace the destination with the exact server URL and stream path from Live Control Room; the example destination is only a placeholder. Confirm that your installed build includes libx264 before using this command. FFmpeg documents the RTMP pattern in its protocol documentation.

Here, -re reads the file at its natural playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. The video bitrate, maximum rate, buffer size, pixel format, GOP length, audio codec, and audio bitrate are example choices. Match them to the source, host, and YouTube’s current recommendations instead of copying them blindly.
Set a suitable resolution, bitrate, and keyframe interval
YouTube’s typical SDR encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30 is 10 Mbps. For other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs, use the corresponding row in YouTube’s current table rather than extrapolating that figure or mixing codec recommendations: YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
The example’s -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP. At 30 fps, that corresponds to a two-second interval; at other frame rates, choose a GOP length that matches the target interval. Do not use this SDR example unchanged for HDR: YouTube has separate HDR and HLS requirements.

Use RTMPS where your build and endpoint support it
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to its servers. Before changing the URL scheme, verify that the installed FFmpeg build and the endpoint supplied for your event support the secure protocol. The RTMP example above does not establish that RTMPS works in every Ubuntu package build. See YouTube’s encoder guidance for current requirements.
Looping a finite video
A single input file reaches its end; that alone does not make it repeat. FFmpeg has input-looping options, but check the exact syntax and behavior against your installed version with ffmpeg -h full or its versioned manual before using one for an unattended stream. This guide does not provide an unverified infinite-loop command. Test the complete playback and reconnect behavior with a representative file before relying on it.
Test the stream and check the connection
- Run a test with movement and audio similar to what you plan to broadcast. YouTube recommends this because a static or silent sample may not reveal problems that occur with real content.
- Watch the preview in Live Control Room before going live. Check that picture, motion, and sound are present and that the event is using the expected stream key.
- Check stream health and audio/video quality during the event. YouTube recommends upload capacity for the total outgoing bitrate plus 20% spare capacity; this is a recommendation, not a guarantee against congestion or outages. Its streaming tips say, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.”
- Use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec, then run an upload speed test. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” See encoder settings and streaming tips.
A wired Ethernet connection can be a practical choice when available, but it cannot compensate for an internet service with insufficient upload capacity. If you use a backup encoder, test the actual failover procedure: a second feed may add another bitrate load, and simply having spare equipment does not establish that the event will fail over cleanly.

Keep a local stream running—and know its limits
Running FFmpeg continuously requires an operating host, a working process, a healthy network, and a way for you to notice failures. A terminal command by itself does not provide supervision or alerting. For an unattended setup, arrange to review FFmpeg logs and process status and periodically check the YouTube watch page; test your chosen supervisor and recovery procedure rather than assuming a process restart will preserve the same live event.
YouTube’s current workflow guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise that a single event or encoder session can run forever, or that restarting FFmpeg will preserve one watch page. Plan for monitoring and possible event-level intervention rather than treating “always-on” as guaranteed continuity.
Fix common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or cannot initialize it | The installed build may not include the selected encoder. | Check ffmpeg -encoders and choose an encoder available in that build, or use a suitable build after checking its instructions. |
| FFmpeg cannot connect to the destination | The URL, stream path, key, or protocol may be wrong or unsupported. | Copy the current ingest details from Live Control Room, confirm the key, and check ffmpeg -protocols for the protocol you intend to use. |
| YouTube does not show a preview, or reports poor stream health | The feed may not be reaching the expected event, or the connection may not sustain the outgoing bitrate. | Check the event and key, review FFmpeg’s output, verify resolution-specific bitrate settings, and test upload capacity with headroom. |
| Video or audio quality is wrong | The source, chosen encoding settings, or output configuration may not match the intended stream. | Test with representative motion and audio; check the selected codec, pixel format, bitrate, frame rate, and YouTube preview. |
| The stream ends when the file finishes | The input was finite and no verified looping behavior was configured. | Check your installed FFmpeg version’s help for input-looping options and test the complete run before leaving it unattended. |
| The stream stops after a network or host interruption | The local encoder or connectivity stopped; a restart does not guarantee the YouTube event will resume as before. | Inspect logs and host/process status, check the event in Live Control Room, and follow the event’s current recovery workflow. |
Copyright, reused content, and stream-key safety
Use video and audio you are authorized to broadcast. A technically successful FFmpeg connection does not grant rights to music, footage, or other material, and does not establish that a channel or stream complies with YouTube’s rules. Review YouTube’s policies and the permissions that apply to your content before leaving a stream unattended.
Keep the stream key private. Avoid embedding it in a command likely to be saved in shell history or exposed in process listings; use a safer secret-handling approach appropriate to your host. If the key is compromised, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update your encoder configuration.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain an Ubuntu machine and home connection, StreamNeo runs an uploaded video or playlist as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo plays the upload rather than broadcasting from a camera, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
