You can run a continuous YouTube stream from a VPS by preparing a livestream in YouTube Studio, then running an encoder on the server to send the audio-and-video feed to YouTube over RTMPS. Before starting, confirm your channel is eligible and that you have permission to stream every track; a VPS keeps the encoder process off your home computer, but it does not clear music rights or guarantee uninterrupted service.

What you need before starting

  • An eligible YouTube channel: YouTube requires the channel to be verified and to have no livestreaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube also says livestreamers must be at least 16. Encoder-based streaming is a supported method. YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility and setup guidance sets out these requirements.
  • Music cleared for the intended use: Permission must cover the recordings and compositions you plan to stream, as well as the intended livestream and territories. Channel verification does not establish music rights.
  • A VPS and an encoder: The VPS runs the encoder; the encoder sends the stream to YouTube. Choose a server and network setup capable of sustaining your chosen feed. The right CPU, memory, bandwidth and plan depend on the encoder and media, and no provider or plan is established here.
  • Access to YouTube Studio and your stream key: YouTube provides the ingest details for the event. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, put it in a public command or expose it in screenshots.

Clear the music before you go live

Do not assume a Marathi song is free to stream because it is available online, because you bought a copy, or because you have permission from one contributor. A track may involve separate rights in the musical composition and the sound recording. Identify the relevant owners and confirm that the permission or licence covers a continuous YouTube livestream and the territories in which it will be available. This is practical guidance, not a legal conclusion about any particular track or licence.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can trigger a warning or placeholder; if the matched material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A copyright strike can also end a livestream. YouTube advises creators who have licensed third-party content to ask its owner to add the channel to the Content ID allowlist. Without allowlisting, a stream may still be interrupted even when the creator has a licence, including when it is limited to territories where the creator says it has the necessary rights. An archived livestream may also receive a Content ID claim after it ends. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright issues.

Indian law is relevant to Indian channels and recordings: the Copyright Act, 1957 describes “communication to the public” broadly and includes that right for musical works and sound recordings. The Copyright Rules also describe a statutory broadcast-licensing process for certain published works and recordings. Those provisions do not establish that a particular statutory licence applies to a YouTube livestream or that a specific Marathi track is cleared. Check current law and obtain track-specific advice if you are unsure. The Copyright Rules, 1957 and the Copyright Act, 1957 are official references.

How the VPS-to-YouTube stream works

YouTube Studio prepares the live event and supplies its ingest destination and stream key. An encoder running on the VPS reads or plays your permitted audio-and-video source and sends the live feed to that destination. The VPS is the sender; YouTube is the destination. For secure ingest, YouTube documents RTMPS, which uses RTMP over an SSL connection. Use the RTMPS protocol, the correct endpoint shown by YouTube, and port 443 as specified in YouTube’s RTMPS ingest documentation.

The exact Studio controls can change, and a working encoder command depends on the media, software build and server configuration. The available official references establish encoder streaming and RTMPS, but do not validate a particular FFmpeg command, VPS plan, bitrate, resolution, CPU/RAM allocation, restart supervisor or container image. Do not copy a command or server specification without checking it against your actual setup.

Launch procedure

  1. Confirm channel eligibility in YouTube Studio. Verify that the channel meets YouTube’s requirements, including verification and no livestream restriction in the prior 90 days. If livestreaming is not enabled, resolve that before building the server workflow.
  2. Prepare the stream source. Assemble the recording or playlist you intend to play and verify that you hold permission for all included material. Keep the source files accessible to the VPS encoder.
  3. Create or prepare the live event in YouTube Studio. Use YouTube’s current livestream workflow and choose encoder streaming. Obtain the event’s ingest destination and stream key from Studio; do not share them publicly.
  4. Configure the encoder on the VPS. Point it to the RTMPS destination provided by YouTube, use port 443, and provide the stream key through a protected configuration method. Set the encoder to read the intended source and maintain a continuous feed. Consult the encoder’s documentation for options appropriate to your source; no universal bitrate, resolution or command is established here.
  5. Test before announcing the channel as live. Start the encoder and check that YouTube receives a healthy picture and sound. Confirm that the correct event is selected, the audio is audible, playback advances as intended and the stream remains connected during a meaningful test.
  6. Start the public broadcast and monitor it. Use Studio’s controls to take the event live, then monitor both the encoder process and YouTube’s status. Keep a way to receive alerts if the process exits or ingest stops.

Keep the stream running and recover safely

“Always-on” is an operational goal, not a guarantee. The encoder can stop, the VPS or its network can fail, YouTube can end ingest, or a rights or account issue can interrupt the broadcast. The sources establish platform and rights risks, but do not establish a VPS availability commitment or a setup that guarantees 24/7 uptime.

  • Supervise the encoder: Configure a process supervisor or equivalent so you can detect when the encoder exits and decide whether it is safe to restart.
  • Alert on failure: Monitor the encoder process and the YouTube ingest state rather than assuming that a running VPS means the channel is live.
  • Test recovery: Test what happens after an encoder restart, VPS reboot and temporary network interruption. Confirm that the intended event resumes correctly before relying on the setup.
  • Keep rights monitoring active: A technically healthy stream can still be interrupted by a Content ID match, copyright strike or other platform restriction. Resolve claims and allowlisting with the relevant rights owner.

Preflight checklist

  • The channel is verified, meets YouTube’s age rule and has no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days.
  • Every recording in the stream is cleared for the intended livestream and territories, with Content ID allowlisting discussed where licensed third-party music is involved.
  • The stream key is private and stored outside publicly visible commands, logs and screenshots.
  • The encoder uses YouTube’s correct RTMPS endpoint and port 443.
  • The test confirms audible sound, expected playback and healthy YouTube ingest.
  • Process and ingest failures can be noticed, and recovery has been tested.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want to maintain a VPS and encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded-video YouTube stream running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. As with any approach, you still need rights to the music you stream. Start with StreamNeo’s free day.
