You can run a YouTube gaming ambience stream from prerecorded footage by sending a rights-cleared video through a streaming encoder such as OBS to a verified, eligible YouTube channel. The encoder—not YouTube—plays and sends the feed, so a 24/7 setup requires the playback source, encoder, and internet connection to keep working. YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted looping or archiving for a stream that runs longer than 12 hours.
What you need before going live
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube sets these as eligibility requirements for encoder streaming; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- A computer that can run your chosen encoder and play the prerecorded footage, plus a reliable internet connection. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required, but its guidance does not establish a minimum computer specification.
- A video file and audio you have the rights to broadcast. If you plan to monetize the stream, confirm that the relevant rights also allow commercial use.
- An encoder such as OBS, and the stream URL and key YouTube provides in Live Control Room.
A prerecorded ambience stream is not a camera broadcast: your encoder plays the recording and sends that output as a live feed. YouTube lists OBS among encoders in its setup guidance, but that alone does not guarantee a particular looping configuration.
Clear game, footage, and music rights first
Do not assume that owning a game or capturing its gameplay automatically gives you permission to broadcast or monetize it. Publishers set the commercial-use terms for their games, and the permitted use can differ by title. Review the specific publisher’s policy and keep a copy of any permission you rely on.

YouTube’s livestream terms require you to have the rights needed for the content you stream, including music rights. Check the game soundtrack, separate music or ambience, overlays, and any third-party material in the recording. Muting or replacing a soundtrack may be necessary if its rights do not cover livestreaming.

Monetization has a separate platform-policy test. YouTube says gameplay monetization depends on publisher rights and cautions that extended gameplay alone may not be accepted: Video game and software content. Its monetization rules also assess reused content and inauthentic content at channel level. A near-identical loop with little creator contribution may raise concerns; meaningful original selection, editing, context, or other value can make your contribution clearer, but does not guarantee approval. YouTube clarified on July 15, 2025 that repetitive or mass-produced material falls under its “inauthentic content” policy. Read the current YouTube channel monetization policies.
Set up the prerecorded feed in OBS and YouTube
- Prepare the recording. Use footage and audio you have cleared for the intended use. Watch the file from beginning to end, check that the audio is present at a sensible level, and confirm that the visual quality is what you want viewers to see. Configure your playback source to repeat the file if you want a loop; the exact method depends on your encoder setup, and YouTube does not guarantee a particular loop configuration.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live event, then locate the stream URL and stream key for that event. YouTube’s encoder workflow and event setup are described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Connect OBS to the event. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the service/server option appropriate to the YouTube connection, and enter the stream details supplied for the event. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a recording or screenshot. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Review the stream settings that affect viewers. In Live Control Room, check the event’s visibility and review latency, DVR, auto-start, and auto-stop settings. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings explains these controls. Choose settings for the experience you intend; do not assume a scheduled event is public or that automatic start and stop behave as you expect without checking the event configuration.
- Use a compatible ingest protocol. YouTube supports encoder workflows, including HLS where appropriate. Choose HLS only when your encoder or content needs a documented capability such as HDR or a codec not supported by RTMP, and follow YouTube’s segment requirements rather than relying on defaults. HLS has higher latency than RTMP; details are in Set up an HLS stream.
- Start a private or unlisted test. Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check picture, sound, and playback from the watch page on both a computer and a mobile device. Confirm that the intended recording is playing and that the event’s visibility is correct before switching to a public stream.
- Go public and monitor it. Start the public event only after the test looks right. Keep an eye on Live Control Room and the public watch page; an encoder stream depends on the playback source, computer, encoder, and connection continuing to work.
Choose a session length with archiving in mind
YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish automatic archiving for a 24/7 stream, nor does it promise that a long session will remain available as a replay. If an archive matters, schedule separate sessions under 12 hours and confirm current behavior in Studio rather than relying on a single continuous broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

YouTube does not prescribe a universally best session schedule or guarantee uninterrupted operation for a particular computer, connection, or encoder. Pick a schedule based on whether a replay matters, how often you can monitor and restart the stream, and whether each session offers clear original value.
Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube does not show an incoming encoder feed
- Check that the event is the one open in Live Control Room and that OBS is using the matching stream URL and key.
- Confirm that the channel meets live-stream eligibility requirements and has no restriction in the previous 90 days.
- If the key may have been exposed or is incorrect, reset it in YouTube and enter the replacement in OBS.
The preview appears, but viewers get no picture or sound
- Check the OBS preview and confirm the media source is playing the intended file.
- Check the audio source, mixer level, and mute state in OBS, then listen on the watch page from another device.
- Verify the event’s visibility and test playback from the public watch page before announcing the stream.
The loop stops or the stream drops
- Check whether the video source is still playing and whether the computer, OBS, or internet connection has stopped.
- Review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings and restart the encoder or event as needed.
- Do not treat a long-running setup as guaranteed uptime: YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish round-the-clock service levels or universal reconnect behavior for a particular setup.
The replay is missing after a long broadcast
Automatic archiving is documented for streams under 12 hours, not established for a 24/7 session. Check Studio’s current event and archive status. For future broadcasts where a replay matters, use shorter scheduled sessions and verify the archive after each one.

A copyright claim or monetization concern appears
Recheck the game publisher’s commercial-use terms and the rights for soundtrack, music, overlays, and other third-party elements. Remove or replace material you cannot clear. Review YouTube’s current livestream terms at Livestream terms and conditions and monetization rules; permission to broadcast does not itself guarantee monetization.
