You can run a YouTube radio stream from OBS on an Indian broadband connection if your channel is eligible, you have rights to the music, and you choose a bitrate your connection can sustain—not merely one your broadband plan advertises. Measure upload performance where and when the stream will run, start with a modest profile for a mostly static visual, test it with representative audio, and watch both YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame indicators.
Before you start: channel access, rights, and connection
Make sure YouTube Live is available
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Check access in YouTube Studio before configuring OBS; eligibility figures are from YouTube Help, which does not display a publication year. See YouTube live streaming tips.
Clear the music for live streaming
You need the necessary rights for the music and for the territories where the stream will be available. YouTube’s Live Stream Terms specifically include music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party matches; unresolved matches can interrupt or terminate a stream. A license does not necessarily prevent an interruption: if a rights owner uses Content ID, ask whether they can allowlist your channel. Having access to a track or a music subscription does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it live. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Measure the actual connection
Advertised plan speed is not a dependable measure of sustained upload at your streaming location. Test the connection at the time and place you expect to broadcast, and repeat the test if performance varies. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Check your provider’s terms for any applicable plan limits; there is no single Indian broadband speed or data allowance that can be assumed for every ISP, city, or plan.

Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and confirm live access. Verify the channel and check for a live-stream restriction before planning a broadcast.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream in Live Control Room. Set the title, visibility, and other broadcast details. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains the stream setup.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, select YouTube as the streaming service or use the matching custom-ingestion workflow with the details YouTube provides. OBS sends the feed directly to the streaming service; the precise screen labels can vary by OBS version. YouTube explains that the key lets the encoder send the feed to the correct stream.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not post it, share it, or show it on screen. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
For OBS-specific help, use the OBS Project Help Portal. Exact interface labels may change between releases, so follow the labels in the version you have installed.
Choose OBS settings that fit the upload you measured
YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video at up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Available encoders depend on your OBS setup and hardware; use a supported option that runs steadily, then verify the actual output. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Use YouTube’s bitrate figures as targets, not a broadband guarantee
The following are YouTube Help’s recommended video bitrates, not minimum connection speeds and not a claim about what an Indian broadband connection can sustain. Leave headroom below measured, stable upload for the stream to remain reliable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Profile | H.264 recommended video bitrate | H.265 or AV1 recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
For stereo audio, YouTube’s advanced recommendations list 128 Kbps at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. The video bitrate is not the entire upload requirement: audio and stream overhead also use bandwidth.

Start modest for a radio visual
A station using a static cover image usually has little reason to send 60 frames per second. That is a practical inference, not a YouTube rule: lower resolution and frame rate can reduce bandwidth needs. Choose a profile from YouTube’s supported settings that your measured sustained upload can handle, then judge the image and sound in a test. If you use moving graphics, test with the same motion you expect to broadcast.
Set keyframes, audio, and latency
- Rate control: choose CBR.
- Keyframe interval: set two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: use AAC or MP3; YouTube lists 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo.
- Latency: for a mostly one-way radio stream, favor stability unless real-time audience interaction matters. YouTube warns that lower latency may increase viewer buffering.
Test the stream before relying on it
- Run a controlled broadcast. Use private, unlisted, or another suitable controlled visibility setting. Include representative audio and any animation or moving graphics planned for the real station.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the encoder feed and that its health indicators remain satisfactory.
- Watch OBS connection and dropped-frame indicators. OBS says a yellow or red connection indicator and rising dropped frames can mean the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate.
- Adjust one constraint at a time. If the connection struggles, reduce bitrate or resolution, or investigate local network instability. Test again after each change rather than assuming the plan’s advertised speed will solve it.
- Confirm playback. Listen and watch the receiving stream, not only the OBS preview, so you can catch audio, visual, and delivery problems before a longer broadcast.
YouTube’s guidance is simple: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” OBS also notes that “There are no OBS servers – the connection goes directly from your computer to the streaming service.” See the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide if dropped frames persist.

Troubleshooting common stream problems
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| OBS shows rising dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator | The connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the chosen bitrate. | Reduce bitrate or resolution, retest at the actual streaming location, and investigate local network instability. Do not infer sustained upload from the broadband plan label. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | The stream may not be active, or the URL/key entered in OBS may not match the broadcast. | Check Live Control Room, confirm the current stream URL and key, and reconnect the encoder. Reset an exposed key and replace it in OBS. |
| The broadcast is interrupted after music begins | A third-party match or unresolved rights issue may have triggered YouTube’s live protections. | Review YouTube’s copyright notice, confirm the track is licensed for live streaming in the relevant territories, and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting if applicable. |
| Viewers buffer when using a low-latency mode | YouTube warns that lower latency can increase buffering. | Choose a more stable latency setting if immediate interaction is not important. |
