You can send video from an Ubuntu VPS to YouTube Live with FFmpeg by creating a YouTube event, copying its current RTMPS URL and stream key, making the media available on the server, then running FFmpeg with settings that match the source and YouTube’s encoder recommendations. A headless VPS cannot access your laptop’s camera or capture card by itself: upload the file, download it to the server, mount a remote source, or provide another capture path the VPS can reach.
The steps below are not tied to a particular hosting company, Ubuntu release, or India-to-YouTube network route. Test the actual VPS, encoder build, and stream before depending on them.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is enabled for live streaming. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help.
- An Ubuntu VPS with outbound connectivity to YouTube’s ingest endpoint and enough CPU or supported hardware encoding capacity for your chosen profile.
- A media source accessible to the VPS. For a local recording, transfer it to the server; for a camera or capture card, establish a capture path the server can actually access.
- FFmpeg built with the encoder and output protocol you intend to use. Package contents vary by Ubuntu release and build, so verify rather than assume.
- The right to stream the video and audio you provide, including any music.
Create the YouTube Live event and get its URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live and open Live Control Room. Create or schedule the event you intend to stream.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that event.
- Copy the event’s stream URL. If you want encrypted RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL shown in the event settings; do not assume the initially displayed RTMP address is secure. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance notes that port 443 may need to be specified, and its API documentation says the server hostname is needed for TLS SNI authentication.
Use the URL and key belonging to the current event. Do not publish a real key or hard-code it in a shared script.

Prepare Ubuntu and verify FFmpeg
Put the source where the VPS can read it
Upload the video to the VPS, download it there, or use a reliable mounted or remote input. A file stored only on your laptop is not available to a headless server. If the input is a live camera or capture device, configure a compatible capture source accessible from the VPS; a prerecorded-file loop is not a camera feed.

Install and check the FFmpeg build
Install FFmpeg using a package suitable for your chosen Ubuntu release or another appropriate build. Then check the version and the capabilities the command will need:
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders | grep -E 'libx264|aac'
ffmpeg -protocols | grep -E 'rtmp|rtmps'
The example below uses libx264, AAC, and RTMPS output. If the encoder or protocol is missing, choose a build that includes it or adapt the command to an available, compatible encoder. No single package build or version is guaranteed here.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Match the output profile to the source and your intended quality. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 at up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a keyframe every two seconds, with no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its H.264 recommendations include these comparable profiles:

| Output profile | YouTube minimum bitrate | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a promise of viewer quality or a special requirement for India. For stereo audio, YouTube’s guidance is AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. Use the row for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually plan to send; for example, 1080p30 H.264 is recommended at 14 Mbps, not the 10 Mbps value YouTube lists for 1080p30 AV1/H.265.
Inspect the file before choosing whether to re-encode or copy its existing streams:
ffprobe -hide_banner /path/to/input.mp4
Check the video dimensions, frame rate, audio stream, and codecs. Re-encoding lets you set an output profile but consumes CPU or encoder resources. Stream copy avoids video re-encoding when the source codec, container, timestamps, and stream layout are already suitable for YouTube ingest; it does not convert an incompatible source into a compliant profile.

Check that the VPS can sustain the selected combined audio/video bitrate on its outbound route. Software encoding must also keep pace with playback in real time. CPU performance and network stability vary with the source, workload, instance, and provider; there is no universal vCPU or RAM size established for this workflow. An India-region server does not automatically have a better route to YouTube ingest.
Loop a prerecorded file to YouTube with FFmpeg
This illustrative command loops an accessible 1080p30 H.264 source, re-encodes it to H.264 at YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps for that profile, and sends stereo AAC audio over RTMPS:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-r 30 -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "$RTMPS_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
-re paces file input in real time, and -stream_loop -1 repeats it indefinitely. At 30 fps, -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or a two-second keyframe interval. The command is an example, not a tested universal preset: another source may need scaling, stream mapping, timestamp handling, a different frame rate, a different encoder, or other changes. If you change resolution or frame rate, select the matching YouTube profile and adjust bitrate and keyframe interval accordingly.

Provide RTMPS_URL and STREAM_KEY securely in your environment rather than putting a real key in the command text. Avoid exposing it in shell history, logs, screenshots, or public scripts. The key is a credential; revoke or replace it in YouTube Studio if it is disclosed.
Test the stream and monitor its health
- Start FFmpeg and check that it remains running without repeated connection or encoding errors.
- Open the event in Live Control Room. Confirm that the preview shows the intended video and that audio is present.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health messages before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio representative of the planned broadcast and monitoring stream health.
- When finished, stop FFmpeg and end the event in YouTube Studio as appropriate. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; do not assume a longer continuous stream will be archived.
Fix common connection and stream-health warnings
YouTube receives no incoming data
- Confirm that FFmpeg is still running and that the input file is readable.
- Verify that the URL and key were copied from the current YouTube event and are supplied in the expected form.
- Check outbound connectivity from the VPS and confirm that its FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.
TLS, SSL, or timeout errors
- Check that the URL uses the
rtmpsscheme and the hostname shown by Live Control Room. - Use the correct port if required; YouTube’s RTMPS guidance says port 443 may need to be specified.
- Keep the hostname intact for TLS SNI authentication. A copied address with a missing or altered hostname can prevent a secure connection.
Low or unstable stream health
- Compare the actual video bitrate with the selected YouTube profile; low or high bitrate can trigger diagnostics.
- Check that the output frame rate and keyframe interval match the intended profile. YouTube can flag frame-rate mismatch or an overly long GOP.
- Confirm that video and audio are both present and that FFmpeg is producing data continuously. Missing streams or starvation can affect health.
- If the encoder falls behind, reduce the workload or use an appropriate faster or hardware encoder, then test again. If network output is intermittent, investigate the VPS route and sustained egress rather than assuming the server’s geographic location resolves it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream rather than direct FFmpeg/VPS control, StreamNeo is the first managed option to consider: it loops uploaded video from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

Cost and operating trade-offs
A self-managed FFmpeg setup requires a VPS with suitable sustained egress and enough compute for the chosen encoder, plus time to configure, test, monitor, and recover it. The appropriate instance and total cost depend on the source, whether you re-encode, stream duration, concurrent workloads, provider transfer terms, and route. No provider price, India region, or universal server size is established here, so compare current provider specifications and measure your actual workload before committing.
With FFmpeg, you control the command and the server but own maintenance and troubleshooting. A managed continuous-stream service trades that direct control for an upload-and-launch workflow. YouTube’s verified encoder directory also lists Gyre as a cloud service for continuous prerecorded-video streaming; check its current offering and terms directly before choosing it.
