To loop prerecorded retro gaming footage on YouTube Live, add the video file to an OBS Studio scene as a Media Source, enable looping, connect OBS to the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, and preview the feed before going live. You do not need a console or capture card unless you want to broadcast live output from a physical console instead of a file.
Before you start
- A video file: Use footage you have the rights to stream. The basic workflow repeats a file already on your computer.
- OBS Studio: It acts as both the video playback source and the encoder that sends the feed to YouTube.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming: YouTube says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. First-time activation of live streaming can take up to 24 hours, so check access in advance. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance covers the current requirements.
- A stable internet connection: YouTube recommends available upload bandwidth at least 20% above the total stream bitrate.
YouTube describes encoders as tools for streaming gameplay, overlays, and external hardware. That does not mean a physical console is required when you already have a recording. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the encoder workflow.
Set up the repeating video in OBS
- Create a scene: In OBS, add a scene for the broadcast. A dedicated scene makes it easier to keep the stream focused on the game footage and its audio.
- Add the recording: In the scene’s Sources box, select + → Media Source, create a new source, and choose the retro gaming video file.
- Enable looping: Open the Media Source properties and turn on its loop option. Confirm that the source is set to play the chosen file, not an unintended playlist or another media source.
- Check the canvas: Make sure the video is framed as intended in the OBS preview. If the source and canvas have different aspect ratios, inspect for cropping, empty space, or unwanted stretching; do not distort the footage just to fill the screen.
- Check the audio: Watch the OBS audio meters while the file plays. Set an appropriate level and confirm that the soundtrack or game audio is present and not clipping.
- Test the loop transition: Let the file reach its end and restart. Listen for an audio pop or pause and look for a black frame or interruption. If the transition is distracting, adjust or edit the source file before relying on it for a long broadcast.
OBS documents Media Source as a way to play media files and supports looping them. Its exact labels can vary by version, so look for the loop control in the selected source’s properties. OBS Media Sources documentation describes the source.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live and launch
- Open YouTube Studio: Select Create → Go Live to create or schedule the broadcast and open Live Control Room.
- Copy the connection details: In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send video to the associated stream, so do not share or publish it.
- Enter them in OBS: Open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream details. Use the URL and key shown for the stream you are preparing.
- Start the encoder and preview: In OBS, start streaming. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in YouTube Live Control Room; inspect the image, framing, sound, and end-to-start loop transition before making the broadcast public.
- Go live and monitor: Start the live broadcast in Live Control Room. Keep an eye on OBS and YouTube playback, particularly audio, video continuity, and connection status.
If this is the first time live streaming has been enabled on the channel, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Do not schedule a launch assuming it will be immediate. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting an encoder and previewing its feed.

Keep the stream stable
- Leave bandwidth headroom: YouTube recommends upload bandwidth exceeding the total stream bitrate by 20%. If the outgoing stream uses 5 Mbps, for example, that recommendation implies at least 6 Mbps of available upload capacity; other household or office traffic can reduce what is available to OBS.
- Set up before the intended start: Give YouTube time to receive the encoder feed and check the preview before launching.
- Check more than the OBS preview: YouTube recommends checking the watch page and playback on mobile as well as monitoring audio and video continuously.
- Verify the file and loop: A stream can be connected while its media source is paused, ended, muted, or showing the wrong scene. Confirm that the file is playing and restarts correctly.
These checks follow YouTube’s live-streaming tips. The 20% figure is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable.
Rights, copyright, and channel risk
Only stream footage, game audio, music, and other material you are entitled to use for the intended broadcast. Whether a particular game publisher permits a particular stream depends on that rights holder’s terms; the fact that footage is from a retro game does not by itself establish permission.

YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content. If matching content is detected, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; continued use can lead to interruption or termination. A license from a rights holder may not be enough to prevent a live interruption if the channel is not on that holder’s Content ID allowlist. An archived stream can also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends. See YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright issues.
When a capture card is—and is not—needed
A capture card is not part of the prerecorded-file workflow. OBS can play a video file and send it to YouTube without a console being connected. A capture path is relevant only when you want to capture live output directly from a physical retro console.

Console and computer compatibility depends on the console’s output and the capture device. Before buying hardware, check connector and signal compatibility, supported resolution and frame rate, operating-system support, and whether the workflow captures game audio. No specific console or capture-card model is assessed here, so compatibility should be confirmed with the manufacturers.

YouTube does not let the channel go live
Check that the channel is verified, that it has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and that the streamer meets YouTube’s stated minimum age of 16. If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours.

The stream does not appear in Live Control Room
Confirm that OBS is using the stream URL and key for the intended broadcast, then check OBS’s connection status and start the encoder again if needed. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new one.
The video is black, frozen, or not repeating
Check that the correct scene is active, the Media Source points to the intended file, and looping is enabled in that source’s properties. Confirm that the file can play locally and that the source has not reached its end in a stopped state.

The audio is missing, too quiet, or distorted
Check the file’s audio, the source’s mute state, and the OBS audio meters. Lower the source level if the meter indicates clipping, then preview the incoming YouTube feed to verify the actual stream audio.
The stream buffers or disconnects
Check available upload bandwidth against the total stream bitrate, allowing YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce competing network traffic and monitor the encoder connection and YouTube preview before relaunching.
YouTube interrupts the broadcast
Review YouTube’s warning and identify any matched material. Remove or replace material unless you have the required rights and, where applicable, the rights holder has allowlisted your channel for Content ID. A license does not necessarily stop an automated live interruption.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream to keep running without leaving your own computer on, StreamNeo is the cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers it. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India, with card checkout worldwide. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only, and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.
See StreamNeo or its plans, and try the free day by creating a StreamNeo account.
