You can make Tabletop Simulator appear on YouTube Live either by capturing a game session as it happens or by sending a recording through a streaming encoder such as OBS Studio. For a rerun of an existing session, use a local video file; for live play and commentary, capture the game screen. In either case, YouTube needs an eligible channel, a live event, and an encoder connected with that event’s stream URL and key.

Choose what “rerun” means for your stream

A rerun can mean either a live Tabletop Simulator session captured as you play, or a prerecorded match replayed as a live YouTube feed. The first requires the game to be running during the broadcast and suits live commentary or interaction. The second plays an existing recording, so you do not need an active game session during playback. Both workflows use an encoder to send video to YouTube Live.

  • Live gameplay: capture the game window or display in OBS while playing.
  • Recorded gameplay: add a video file as an encoder source. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes using OBS to livestream existing video files, but it does not establish the exact loop controls in current OBS versions. Verify the repeat behavior in your installed version and test it before relying on unattended playback.

Check that your channel can go live

YouTube requires the channel to be verified and to have no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. Its guidance says streamers must be at least 16 years old. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so activate it before the day of your event.

Set up Tabletop Simulator and OBS

Prepare the gameplay source

For live play, launch Tabletop Simulator and arrange the view you want viewers to see. In OBS, add a source that captures the game window or display, then check that the game is visible in the OBS preview. For a recording, add the local video file as a media source. Confirm the file has the intended picture and sound, and test whether it repeats as needed; do not assume the default behavior loops indefinitely.

Check whether your computer can run both applications

Steam lists Tabletop Simulator minimum requirements that include, for Windows, 64-bit Windows 10 version 21H1 or newer, 4 GB RAM, a DX10-capable graphics device, broadband internet, and 3 GB of storage. The listed minimum operating systems also include macOS 12+ and Ubuntu 22.04 / 24.04 (64-bit). These are game requirements, not a promise that a computer can run the game and encode a stream smoothly. OBS also cautions that meeting its system requirements does not guarantee streaming performance.

Create a YouTube Live event and connect the encoder

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a live event. Choose the stream workflow intended for encoder software.
  2. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into the corresponding server and key fields in OBS. Keep the key private: it is the credential that allows an encoder to send a feed to your channel.
  3. Set your video and audio sources in OBS, then start sending a test feed.
  4. Wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that the picture and sound are correct before starting the public event.
  5. Start the event using the prompts in YouTube Studio. Monitor the stream while it is live; when finished, stop the event and encoder.

YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of time, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video quality. See its encoder setup guide and streaming tips.

Choose encoder settings and protect stream quality

Use settings supported by both your encoder and internet connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Supported video codecs listed by YouTube include H.264, HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. These are platform recommendations and supported options, not a reason to select the highest setting regardless of your connection.

  • Resolution and frame rate: choose a level your computer can encode while Tabletop Simulator is running. Lower them if the game, preview, or stream becomes unstable.
  • Bitrate: choose a bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and frame rate, then check that your sustained upload capacity has headroom.
  • Upload capacity: YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the total stream bitrate. A connection that only barely matches the bitrate leaves little room for normal variation.
  • Keyframes: set a two-second interval where the encoder allows it; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Protocol: use RTMPS where available for secure delivery.

For the current encoder recommendations, consult YouTube’s bitrate, resolution, and encoder settings. For bandwidth and monitoring guidance, see YouTube’s streaming tips.

Keep the broadcast compliant and know what gets archived

Only stream gameplay, music, images, and other material you have permission to broadcast. A tabletop game session can include third-party content such as music or artwork; check the rights for everything included in both live play and a prerecorded rerun. YouTube’s live-streaming and encoder documentation does not guarantee that a particular recording is cleared for use, so rights remain the creator’s responsibility.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a complete YouTube archive for a broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer. If the replay matters, plan a local recording as a separate backup and verify it is working before the event. See YouTube’s encoder guide.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • You cannot start a live event: check channel verification, live-streaming activation, and any restriction within the preceding 90 days. If this is your first activation, allow up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube shows no encoder preview: confirm OBS is sending to the stream URL for the correct event and that the stream key was copied accurately. Keep the key private and replace it if you believe it has been exposed.
  • The preview has no Tabletop Simulator picture: check that the correct game window or display is selected and visible in OBS. Recheck the source after changing game display modes.
  • The recording stops instead of rerunning: confirm the media source’s repeat behavior in your installed OBS version. The exact current loop UI is version-dependent and should be tested rather than assumed.
  • Video stutters or drops frames: test game and encoder together, reduce graphics load or stream resolution/frame rate, and check that upload bandwidth exceeds the stream bitrate with the recommended headroom.
  • The stream looks or sounds wrong in YouTube: inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live, then monitor audio and video during the event. Check OBS source levels and selected devices if audio is missing or unbalanced.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a prerecorded Tabletop Simulator rerun that should stay live without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option for YouTube. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
  • One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required.

The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
