You can rerun board game sessions on YouTube Live by sending a prerecorded session through an encoder such as OBS, or by using a cloud service to play uploaded videos continuously. First confirm your channel can livestream, choose between scheduled reruns and an always-on loop, make the board and audio easy to follow, then test the stream and check its archive and copyright status. YouTube documents encoder streaming and live-stream copyright enforcement, but its cited help pages do not expressly guarantee a 24/7 prerecorded rerun format.

Can you stream prerecorded videos live on YouTube?

YouTube supports live streaming through an encoder, a webcam, a mobile device, or a console. An encoder lets you compose a scene from sources such as cameras, game capture, microphones, and overlays. The official help pages cited here describe live streaming and enforcement, but do not expressly confirm or guarantee a continuous prerecorded rerun format. Treat a rerun as a programming and operating choice, not as a special YouTube approval.

YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and belong to a creator who is at least 16 to go live. Check YouTube’s current requirements before you plan a schedule: Get started with live streaming. Restrictions may also apply under YouTube’s live-stream rules: Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.

Choose a rerun format that fits the channel

Scheduled episode reruns

A scheduled rerun has a defined start and end. It can be titled around a particular game, session, or episode, making it easier for viewers to understand what they are joining. State clearly in the title or description that it is a replay, and explain whether anyone is monitoring chat or whether chat is unavailable.

Continuous loop

A continuous loop is intended to stay live and repeat one or more uploaded sessions. Label it prominently as prerecorded and make clear whether the loop has a live moderator. Plan who will monitor the encoder or service and what you will do if the connection drops. Do not promise uninterrupted availability or a particular archive duration: the platform sources cited here do not establish either for 24/7 broadcasts.

How to prepare a board game session for a rerun

Physical tabletop games

Prioritize a stable, unobstructed view that lets viewers read the board state, cards, and player actions. An overhead camera mount or tabletop stand may help keep framing consistent, but suitability depends on your camera, table, reach, and mounting method; no particular model is tested or endorsed. OBS accepts cameras as video-capture sources and lets you position sources within a scene. See the OBS Stream Layout Tutorial.

Mattel Games UNO Card Game, Ages 7+, 2-10 Players
  • UNO card game provides classic play, where players match colors or numbers in a race to get rid of all their cards!
  • Action Cards and Wild Cards add unexpected excitement and game-changing fun, like the Reverse Card that switches the direction of play!
  • The deck includes 3 blank Wild Cards for house rules anyone can make up -- erase and create new rules each game!
  • When down to one card, players don't want to forget to yell 'UNO!' Keep score and the first player or team to 500 wins!
  • The color blind accessible deck has special graphic symbols on each card to help identify its color, allowing players with any form of color blindness to play!

Digital gameplay

Capture the game output and add a host camera or commentary if it improves the viewing experience. Console footage may require a capture device to bring the image into OBS. OBS notes that Nintendo Switch family consoles can be captured through a device when docked; Switch Lite cannot be docked for that approach. Confirm your specific console and capture setup before recording: OBS guidance on capturing console footage.

Make the audio understandable

Place the microphone close enough to pick up table commentary clearly. Balance it against game or desktop audio so the sound effects do not drown out players. OBS’s layout tutorial recommends checking audio levels and reducing game or desktop audio when needed to make the microphone audible.

How to rerun a board game session with OBS

  1. Check live access: Verify the channel and confirm it has no live-stream restriction that would prevent broadcasting. Review YouTube’s current live requirements before scheduling.
  2. Prepare the video and scene: In OBS, add your prerecorded session as a media source, then add any overlays or other sources needed for your planned presentation. For a physical game recording, check that the board remains readable; for digital gameplay, confirm the captured game image is framed correctly.
  3. Set audio and output: Choose the intended microphone and other audio sources, balance their levels, and configure OBS output for the stream. YouTube’s stream setup may provide encoder settings and a stream key; use the settings shown for your broadcast rather than assuming one bitrate or resolution suits every connection and source.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube: In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream setup and connect OBS using YouTube’s current encoder workflow. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  5. Rehearse before going live: Follow OBS’s Quick Start Guide to add sources, set audio and output, and test before the first stream. Check camera framing, focus, glare on the board, audio balance, dropped frames, transitions, and the opening and ending slate.
  6. Start and monitor the broadcast: Start the stream from OBS and confirm the image and sound in YouTube’s live control room. For a continuous loop, arrange monitoring and a recovery plan rather than assuming the computer or internet connection cannot fail.
  7. Review the archive: After the broadcast, inspect the live archive in YouTube Studio and check for claims or restrictions. A stream that played without interruption is not necessarily clear of later claims.

Copyright, game art, and archived reruns

YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. Its help page states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can replace the stream with a placeholder and trigger a warning; leaving the material in place can interrupt or terminate the stream. Even when you have a license, a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel. YouTube may also place a Content ID claim on the archive after the broadcast ends. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

A board game recording can include music, artwork, card text, video, and other material. Whether a particular use is permitted depends on the game, publisher, territory, and circumstances; the platform’s enforcement guidance does not settle those rights questions. Consult the relevant publisher’s current policy and obtain permission where appropriate. If music is not essential, omit it or use music you have rights to use.

Organize episodes and set viewer expectations

  • Use an accurate title and description that identify the game, episode, and prerecorded or rerun status.
  • Say whether chat is live and moderated, or whether nobody is present to respond.
  • Use a consistent episode naming scheme and playlists so viewers can follow a campaign or find sessions by game.
  • Keep a person available to handle chat and interruptions if you present the rerun as a live community event.

Run it locally or keep it in the cloud?

OBS gives you direct control over scenes and audio, but a local rerun depends on the computer running OBS and a reliable internet connection. For a physical tabletop feed, you still need to record the session with a camera before you can rerun it. A cloud service instead plays uploaded videos, so your home computer does not need to stay on; it does not replace the initial recording or remove YouTube’s rights rules.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only, and its service does not change YouTube’s copyright policies. See StreamNeo and plan details, then start your free day.
