Run one Playwright test file from your project root with:
npx playwright test tests/login.spec.tsReplace the path with your file. Playwright treats the non-option argument as a filter against the full test-file path, so the path must match what your configuration discovers. Add a configured project name to limit the browser or environment, or use --debug and --list when you need to inspect or verify the run.
Run one test file from the command line
Open a terminal in the directory that contains your Playwright configuration (usually playwright.config.ts or playwright.config.js) and run:
npx playwright test tests/login.spec.tsThe command executes tests collected from that file. It does not select a single test inside the file; use a test title filter or a line location for narrower selection.

Use the package-manager script your project defines
If package.json provides a wrapper script, use it so the project’s local Playwright version and options are preserved. For example:
npm run test:e2e -- tests/login.spec.tsThe double hyphen passes the file argument through to the underlying script. With pnpm or Yarn, use the equivalent argument separator supported by your script.
Make the file path match Playwright discovery
Playwright’s file argument is a regular-expression filter matched against the full path, not a separate file-opening command. A path that exists but is excluded by configuration will not run.
Check the working directory
Run the command from the repository root, or provide a path relative to the directory from which the command is executed. These examples are equivalent only when launched from the same root:
npx playwright test tests/login.spec.ts
npx playwright test ./tests/login.spec.tsIf a path contains spaces or shell metacharacters, quote it:
npx playwright test "tests/account flows/login.spec.ts"
Check testDir, testMatch, and testIgnore
Open the active configuration and verify:
testDiris the directory Playwright scans.testMatchincludes the file’s extension and naming pattern.testIgnoredoes not exclude the path.
By default, Playwright recognizes JavaScript and TypeScript files whose names end in .spec or .test with supported module extensions. A custom configuration can change every part of that behavior.

Limit the run to one configured project
Projects are named configurations in playwright.config.*, commonly used for Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, mobile emulation, or different environments. Without a selector, Playwright runs the file in every configured project.
npx playwright test tests/login.spec.ts --project=chromiumReplace chromium with an actual project name from your configuration. The option selects an existing project; it does not install a browser or create a new project. If the selected project has dependencies, those dependency projects may also run.

Skip project dependencies deliberately
To execute only the selected project and omit its configured dependencies, add --no-deps:
npx playwright test tests/login.spec.ts --project=chromium --no-depsUse this only when the file does not require setup, authentication, or teardown supplied by those dependencies. Otherwise, skipping them can produce misleading failures.
Inspect a file without running it
Use --list to collect and report the tests selected by the file filter without executing them:
npx playwright test tests/login.spec.ts --listThis is the quickest way to distinguish a bad path or discovery rule from a failing test. If the output lists zero tests, inspect the path, configuration, project selection, and any conditional test registration.

Debug the selected file interactively
Add --debug to open Playwright Inspector for the selected file:
npx playwright test tests/login.spec.ts --debugYou can target a source location by appending a line number:
npx playwright test tests/login.spec.ts:42 --debugThe line location narrows the run to the test associated with that source line. Keep the file path and line number together; quoting is advisable when your shell treats punctuation specially.
When to choose debug mode
- Use normal execution for repeatable local and CI runs.
- Use
--debugwhen you need to pause, inspect locators, or step through browser actions. - Use
--listfirst when you are unsure which tests the filter selects.
Run a single file through UI Mode or VS Code
UI Mode
Start UI Mode with:
npx playwright test --uiUse the sidebar to select an individual file, a test group, or a test. UI Mode is useful when you want to watch collection and rerun a focused selection without repeatedly editing a command.

VS Code extension
With the Playwright VS Code extension installed and the workspace opened at the project root, use the run control beside the file or test in the Test Explorer. The extension uses the workspace configuration, so a file omitted by testMatch or excluded by testIgnore will not appear.

Common failures and fixes
“No tests found”
Confirm the command is running from the intended directory and that the path is spelled exactly. Then inspect testDir, testMatch, and testIgnore. Remember that the argument is matched against the full test-file path; a partial pattern can also match a different file than you intended.

The file exists but does not appear in UI Mode
The active project may use a different configuration file, or the file may not satisfy its discovery pattern. Check the workspace’s configuration and any command-line options that select a project or configuration.
The wrong browser runs
Use --project with the exact configured project name. If you omit it, every configured project is eligible. If the name is invalid, list the project names in playwright.config.* and use one of those names.
Setup is missing after adding --no-deps
Remove --no-deps and rerun. Project dependencies often provide authentication state, database preparation, or cleanup. Skipping them changes the test environment rather than merely speeding up collection.
Shell expands a wildcard or special character
Quote the path or pattern. This is especially important for spaces, *, $, parentheses, and brackets:
npx playwright test 'tests/[checkout]/*.spec.ts'Reliable workflows for local and CI runs
Confirm selection before spending time on a run
- Run the file with
--list. - Check that the expected tests and project scope are shown.
- Run the same path without
--list.
This avoids confusing a collection problem with a browser failure.
Keep project selection explicit in automation
CI jobs should include --project when a job is intended for one browser or environment. Otherwise, adding a new project to the configuration can silently expand the job’s scope.

Use the local Playwright version
npx playwright test resolves the project’s installed package. Commit the lockfile and run from the same workspace layout in CI so discovery and project names remain consistent.
Use line targeting only for diagnosis
A file-and-line command is excellent for a failing test investigation, but a complete file command is easier to review and reproduce in scripts. Return to the file-level command after debugging.

How do I run one test inside a file instead of the whole file?
Use a test-title or line filter in addition to the file path; keep the file-only command when you want every test collected from that file.
Does –project install the selected browser?
No. It selects a project already defined in playwright.config.*; browser installation is a separate setup step.
Why does a file path match more than one test file?
The argument is a regular-expression filter against full paths. Use a more specific path or quote special characters.
