To stream a podcast from an Ubuntu VPS to YouTube Live, create a YouTube event, send audio and video from the VPS to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL with FFmpeg, check the preview, and select Go live in YouTube Studio. This works directly for a finished recording or media already available on the server. A live host or guest needs an additional, reliable way to send studio audio and video to the VPS; the VPS cannot capture a microphone in a remote room by itself.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to live stream, with no active live-streaming restrictions.
  • An Ubuntu VPS with FFmpeg, the codecs required by your media, outbound RTMPS access, and enough sustained network capacity for the stream.
  • A finished podcast file staged on the VPS, or a separately arranged live contribution feed from the host or guests.
  • A YouTube Live Control Room event, its server URL, and its stream key.

YouTube’s eligibility guidance says channels must be verified, have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. Check the channel’s Live Control Room before scheduling: YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.

For an initial check, create an unlisted test event rather than discovering a permissions or encoder problem during a public broadcast.

Choose the right source path

Streaming a finished podcast file

This is the simplest VPS workflow. Upload the finished audio/video file to the server, then have FFmpeg read it and send it to YouTube. With -re, FFmpeg reads a file at its native pace rather than sending it as fast as the server can process it.

Streaming a live host or guest

A remote VPS has no access to a microphone or camera in the host’s room. The host’s studio must send its audio and, if needed, video to the server over a separate contribution path. Choose and test that path for the actual studio, server, and network setup. The appropriate protocol and topology depend on the production; do not assume the finished-file command below captures a live microphone.

Prepare the Ubuntu VPS

  1. Check the installed FFmpeg build. Confirm its version, enabled codecs, and RTMPS protocol support using the build’s own version/configuration output. Ubuntu images and FFmpeg builds differ, so do not assume a particular VPS includes every required feature.
  2. Stage the media. Put the podcast file somewhere accessible to the account that will run FFmpeg. Confirm its path, audio track, video dimensions, frame rate, and encoding before the event.
  3. Check the server and network limits. For transcoding, allow CPU headroom; for publishing, verify sustained outbound capacity and the provider’s egress or data-transfer terms. A brief speed test is not a guarantee of stable performance throughout a show.
  4. Keep credentials out of public places. Do not put the stream key in a public script repository, screenshot, or shared log. Be aware that a command entered directly in a shell may remain in shell history.

FFmpeg can read media, process or transcode it, and publish the result to a URL. Its command-line and protocol references explain the available inputs and outputs: FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg protocols.

Create the YouTube event and get the stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
  2. Create or select the scheduled event and open its stream settings in Live Control Room.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event. Use the exact ingest details YouTube provides; do not substitute a guessed address.
  4. Keep the key private. It authorizes an encoder to send a feed to the stream. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s reset option and update the encoder with the replacement.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Its instructions for connecting an encoder and managing stream settings are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Choose live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

Choose video and audio settings

Use YouTube’s recommendations as a starting point, then account for the media, encoder, and server’s sustained upload capacity. The following figures are YouTube Help recommendations accessed in 2026, not independent performance measurements.

Output Recommended video bitrate Minimum video bitrate Keyframe interval
720p at 30 fps, H.264 3 Mbps 2 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds
1080p at 30 fps, H.264 5 Mbps 4 Mbps 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds

YouTube’s advanced guidance recommends stereo AAC or MP3 audio at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. It also recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Leave network headroom for variation; a VPS whose upload just matches the encoder’s target may not sustain a clean stream.

For a mostly static podcast visual, 720p30 may be a sensible starting point when capacity is limited. If you choose a different frame rate, make the keyframe interval match the two-second recommendation: at 30 fps, that means 60 frames. Check YouTube’s current settings table for the selected format before going live.

Publish a prerecorded MP4 with FFmpeg

This illustrative command reads podcast.mp4 in real time, encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and sends the result to an RTMPS destination. Replace the output with the exact RTMPS ingest URL and key displayed for your event.

ffmpeg -re -i podcast.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
  -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY'

The video bitrate and encoder options here are examples, not universal settings. At 30 fps, -g 60 sets a 60-frame, two-second keyframe interval. Set the bitrate and frame rate for the output you intend to send, and ensure the VPS can sustain the resulting total video-and-audio traffic.

The command is not a guarantee that every input file, Ubuntu release, FFmpeg build, or VPS will work unchanged. If the file already uses formats and parameters accepted by YouTube, stream-copying its tracks may reduce CPU use; verify compatibility and inspect the Live Control Room preview before relying on it. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation for input, encoding, and output options.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast

  1. Leave time for setup. YouTube suggests configuring the encoder at least two hours before a scheduled event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event.
  2. Start FFmpeg. Watch its output for connection, codec, or input errors. A running process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
  3. Wait for the preview. In Live Control Room, confirm that the video appears and check representative motion, audio levels, and synchronization.
  4. Go live from YouTube Studio. Once the preview and stream health are acceptable, select Go live for the event.
  5. Monitor the show. Keep Live Control Room open and watch stream health and audio/video quality. Confirm the public watch page can be reached.
  6. End cleanly. End the event in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder. If you also record a local or server-side archive, check that file rather than assuming the live archive is your only copy.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but confirm the current behavior in Studio before relying on the archive as your sole recording. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common failures

YouTube does not show a preview

  • Check that FFmpeg is still running and that its input file path is correct.
  • Verify the exact server URL and stream key for the selected event; reset the key in YouTube if it may have been exposed.
  • Confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected codecs and RTMPS output.
  • Check the VPS firewall and provider rules for outbound RTMPS connectivity.

The stream buffers, drops frames, or reports poor health

  • Reduce output bitrate or resolution if the VPS cannot sustain the required outbound rate.
  • Check CPU usage if FFmpeg is transcoding; a busy server may fail to encode in real time.
  • Review the provider’s bandwidth and egress terms, and test the route from the actual VPS to YouTube’s ingest before a production event.
  • Allow network headroom rather than targeting the full measured upload rate.

Video or audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync

  • Inspect the source file’s tracks and test the file locally before scheduling the stream.
  • Check the Live Control Room preview and FFmpeg output for codec or input errors.
  • Confirm the audio bitrate, sample rate, channel layout, and video frame rate match the output settings you intended.
  • For a live host, troubleshoot the studio-to-VPS contribution feed separately from the VPS-to-YouTube publishing link.

  • Sustained outbound bandwidth and the provider’s data-transfer or egress limits.
  • CPU capacity if FFmpeg must transcode in real time.
  • Network stability and outbound RTMPS support.
  • The host-to-VPS contribution route and the VPS-to-YouTube ingest route, tested separately from the actual locations involved.
  • Total recurring server cost, including any bandwidth charges, rather than the headline VPS price alone.

For a live show, choose a VPS region based on both network legs, not simply its distance from the host. Test the real contribution path and YouTube route before committing to a production setup.

Copyright, live access, and archive checks

Streaming a file you own or are licensed to use does not remove YouTube’s copyright rules. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the podcast audio, music, video, and any inserted clips before broadcasting. Check the channel’s live-streaming eligibility and the event’s settings in YouTube Studio; platform rules and account status can affect whether a planned stream is available. If an archive matters, keep an independent recording and verify the resulting file rather than relying only on automatic archiving.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the podcast is a prepared recording or playlist that should keep playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera or microphone feed. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
