You can host a podcast playlist as a YouTube live broadcast from a Chromebook only if you send YouTube a live audio/video feed; opening a playlist does not turn it into a live stream. First check that your channel can go live, then try YouTube Studio’s webcam workflow in the browser. Use an encoder only if you have confirmed that it works on your specific Chromebook. Before broadcasting, test the audio and watch page, and make sure you have rights to rebroadcast every episode and any archived replay.
First decide whether you need a live event
A YouTube podcast show is an on-demand playlist of full-length video episodes. Viewers can play those episodes in sequence without a live event. A live broadcast is a separate event in YouTube Studio and needs a live feed; simply opening or sharing the playlist will not broadcast it.
- Want listeners to play episodes on demand? Share the podcast playlist.
- Want everyone to watch or listen together at a scheduled time? Create a live event and send it a live audio/video feed using a supported method.
YouTube describes podcast shows as playlists containing full-length video episodes in its podcast setup guidance.
Check that your channel can go live
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live.
- Confirm that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current guidance sets the minimum age to livestream at 16.
- If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable the feature well before the planned broadcast. Activation can take up to 24 hours.
Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance for current account requirements and availability.

Try YouTube Studio’s webcam workflow first
For a simple hosted show, the browser-based webcam path avoids depending on a desktop encoder that may not support ChromeOS. On the Chromebook, open Studio, choose the webcam option if it is offered for your account, select the camera and microphone, enter the title and visibility, then follow the preview and start flow.
This is a practical first attempt, not a guarantee that every Chromebook, browser version, or Studio account exposes every feature. Confirm the workflow on the device before scheduling a public event. The webcam option is suited to a host speaking or presenting; it does not automatically route audio from a browser tab or play a YouTube playlist as the program feed. Check the actual selected microphone and listen to the preview.

Use an encoder only if your Chromebook supports it
An encoder can be useful when the show needs overlays, screen sharing, external audio/video equipment, or other production controls. YouTube’s general workflow is to create the event in Live Control Room, copy its stream URL and stream key into the encoder, preview the incoming feed, and start the broadcast.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live and set up the live event.
- In the encoder, enter the stream URL and key shown in Live Control Room.
- Start sending the feed, check the Studio preview, and start the broadcast when the preview and audio are right.
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send a feed to your event. Do not display it in a screen share or share it publicly. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Chromebook limitation: YouTube’s encoder instructions do not establish a current compatibility list for ChromeOS applications or Chromebook models. Do not assume a desktop encoder will install or work. Verify support for your exact model, ChromeOS version, and app before planning around it. If encoding is essential and no compatible option is available, use another supported computer or a hardware encoder rather than relying on an unverified installation. YouTube’s encoder overview explains the production role of encoders, but does not confirm compatibility for every Chromebook.
Run a private or unlisted preflight
- Schedule a private or unlisted test before the public event.
- Check the Studio preview for the intended video, if any, and audible podcast or host audio at a suitable level.
- Open the watch page on a second device if possible, to confirm viewers can reach it and hear the feed.
- Keep upload capacity about 20% above the stream’s total bitrate, following YouTube’s recommendation for spare bandwidth.
- Use a reliable connection and monitor the live feed after you start. Keep notifications and unintended sounds out of the program audio.
YouTube recommends testing and previewing a stream before relying on it; see its live encoder guidance and stream setup guidance.

Clear rights for the live broadcast and replay
Do not assume that a public YouTube episode is free to rebroadcast. Permission for ordinary on-demand viewing does not, by itself, establish permission to put the episode into a live feed or keep an archived replay available. This applies even if you can already access the playlist.
YouTube Help says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match may lead to a warning, a placeholder replacing the stream, interruption, or termination. YouTube says creators using licensed content should ask the rights owner to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone does not guarantee that automated matching will not interrupt the stream. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

YouTube’s Terms of Service require the provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide use of live content and to comply with applicable laws. Keep a record of the episodes and music used, the territories covered, whether live and archived uses are allowed, and the relevant permissions. This is a practical recordkeeping step, not legal advice.

Google India announced on 21 December 2023 that podcast features were being introduced to creators in India and described podcasts as available on YouTube Music in India. That makes podcast playlists relevant to Indian creators, but it does not change live-stream eligibility, device compatibility, or copyright requirements. Studio features and availability can change, so check what appears in your account before planning the event. See the Google India announcement.
Troubleshoot common problems
- Go Live is unavailable: Check channel verification, age eligibility, live-stream restrictions, and whether first-time activation is still pending. Allow up to 24 hours for first activation.
- The webcam option is missing or does not work: Confirm Studio offers it for the account, allow camera and microphone access when prompted, and verify the workflow on the Chromebook before announcing a public event.
- The audience cannot hear the podcast: The webcam route may be using the Chromebook microphone rather than browser-tab audio. Inspect the selected input and listen to the preview; do not assume a playlist’s sound is part of the live feed.
- The stream buffers or drops: Check the connection and available upload capacity against the stream bitrate, leaving roughly 20% headroom as YouTube recommends. Test from the same network and monitor the feed.
- The live broadcast is interrupted or replaced: A third-party content match may have triggered YouTube’s copyright protections. Verify live and replay rights, and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting where applicable.
- An encoder will not install or send a feed: ChromeOS support is app- and device-specific and is not confirmed by YouTube’s general encoder guidance. Verify compatibility for the exact Chromebook and software, or use another supported computer or a hardware encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded podcast episodes playing continuously on a YouTube channel, rather than host a live camera session from the Chromebook, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
