Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

PDT provides Eclipse’s PHP project and run/debug support, but it does not install the PHP runtime or configure your web server for you.
Choose the right way to run your PHP code
A command-line script and a web application have different requirements. A CLI script runs using a PHP executable on your computer; a web application runs through a configured PHP server and is opened at a URL.
| Run configuration | Use it for | Required setup | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PHP CLI Application | A script that runs locally without HTTP requests or web responses | A local PHP executable configured in PDT | It does not replace a server for an application that depends on web requests. (Eclipse PDT: Running; PHP Executables Preferences) |
| PHP Web Page | A web application served locally or remotely | A configured PHP server; a running server-side debugger if you intend to debug | The selected file must exist on the server, and the URL or path settings may need adjustment. (Running PHP Web Pages) |
Install or enable PHP Development Tools
Eclipse needs PHP Development Tools (PDT) for its PHP project, run, and debug workflows. If Eclipse is not installed, the Eclipse PDT site offers an Eclipse package for PHP developers. If you already use Eclipse, install PDT through Help → Install New Software and use the official update site https://download.eclipse.org/tools/pdt/updates/latest. Restart Eclipse if prompted.
- Open Help → Install New Software.
- Enter the PDT update site URL and follow Eclipse’s installation prompts.
- After installation, check that PHP project creation options and the PHP perspective are available.
Update-site contents and compatibility can change. The Eclipse PDT project release history lists PDT 8.4 on December 10, 2025; check the current PDT site and compatibility details when installing (PDT project release history). Eclipse itself also requires Java, but the Java version depends on the Eclipse package and is not specified here.

Create a PHP project or add a PHP file
Start a new project
- Choose File → New → PHP Project and follow the project wizard.
- In the project, choose File → New → PHP File to create a PHP file.
These project and file commands are covered in the PDT Quick Start.
Open an existing codebase
For an existing PHP application, use the import or open-project workflow that fits its layout and your Eclipse/PDT version. A project may need particular source folders, document-root settings, or external dependencies, so there is no single import recipe that applies to every codebase.

Run a local PHP script
For CLI execution, install PHP for your operating system separately from Eclipse, then tell PDT where its executable is. The executable is the PHP interpreter that runs your script; installing PDT alone does not provide it.
- In Eclipse, open Window → Preferences → PHP → PHP Executables.
- Add an executable and specify the path to the PHP executable on your computer. Associate a
php.inifile if your setup requires one. - Create or select a PHP CLI Application run configuration for the PHP file you want to execute, then run it.
The exact executable path depends on how PHP was installed on your operating system. PDT’s preferences documentation says a PHP executable must be configured before you can debug locally (PHP Executables Preferences).

Run a PHP web application
A web application needs a PHP server configuration; pressing Run on a project without a server and document root does not, by itself, make the application available in a browser. Use a PHP Web Page configuration and point it to the server-side file and URL.
- Choose Run → Run Configurations.
- Create a PHP Web Page configuration.
- Select or create the PHP server, then choose the PHP file to run.
- Check the generated URL and adjust it if the project’s URL layout requires it.
- Run the configuration and open the resulting URL.
The selected PHP file must exist on the server even if you select the local workspace copy. If the project uses files outside the project or absolute server paths, configure include paths or path mapping as needed. The PDT web-page instructions describe these settings.

This Eclipse configuration does not establish what a specific application needs beyond the PHP server: its framework, document root, environment variables, database, and other services depend on the codebase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Debug instead of simply running
Running a file and debugging it are separate actions. For local script debugging, configure the PHP executable and use a PHP CLI Application debug configuration. For a web application, select the server debugger in the PHP Web Page configuration.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Local CLI debugging: Set a breakpoint and launch a PHP CLI Application debug configuration. PDT requires a configured local PHP executable.
- Remote or server debugging: The server must have Xdebug or Zend Debugger running, and the selected server/debugger connection must be configured successfully. PDT’s running documentation states that one of those debuggers must be running on the server for remote debugging (Running).
Troubleshoot common run problems
- Eclipse cannot launch a CLI script: Check that PHP is installed and that the executable path is correct under Window → Preferences → PHP → PHP Executables.
- A web page does not load: Confirm the PHP server is configured and running, the selected file exists at the server path, and the generated URL points to the right location.
- The application cannot find included files: Review the project’s include paths and any required path mapping, especially when files are outside the project or use absolute server paths.
- Breakpoints do not stop execution: Verify you launched a debug configuration, selected the appropriate debugger, and—when debugging remotely—have Xdebug or Zend Debugger running on the server.
