You can keep a relaxing nature-video stream live on YouTube without leaving a computer at home running: host an encoder and playlist on a cloud virtual machine (VM), send the feed to YouTube over RTMPS, and arrange for the encoder to restart and reload the playlist if the VM reboots. A restart setup helps with recovery, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted public stream; you still need to test and monitor it.
1. Check that your YouTube channel can livestream
Before setting up a cloud encoder, confirm that your channel is verified, has had no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and meets YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16 for livestreaming. YouTube lists these as prerequisites for live streaming; check the channel’s current status in YouTube Studio before investing time in the setup. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
2. Clear the rights to both video and audio
Use footage and sound that you own or are licensed to use for this stream. Check that each license covers the relevant territories, duration, and platform, and keep a copy of the license or other permission. YouTube’s live-stream terms require you to have the rights necessary to use the content on Google services worldwide, including applicable music rights. YouTube Terms of Service

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image or interrupt or terminate the broadcast. YouTube also says that licensed third-party content may still be interrupted if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the owner whether allowlisting is required and confirm it is in place before going live. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams

3. Set up the YouTube broadcast and stream feed
YouTube treats the watchable broadcast and the encoder’s incoming feed as separate resources. The broadcast is the viewer-facing event; the stream describes the audio-video feed sent by your encoder. If you schedule events through YouTube’s Live Streaming API, you create broadcasts and associate them with a stream. YouTube’s API guide says a stream can be bound to up to three broadcasts. That limit concerns API resource association; it does not mean one public video automatically represents an unlimited series of separate events. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, choose the broadcast or event you want viewers to watch and configure its visibility and schedule. If you use the API, create a broadcast resource for the event.
- Configure the incoming stream. Select the encoder-based stream setup and retrieve the stream key in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, or shared logs. Use a separate key or rotate it if it is exposed.
- Associate the feed with the event. In Studio, use the stream setup associated with the broadcast. With the API, bind the stream resource to the broadcast. A recurring schedule can reuse stream settings, but each distinct event is still represented as a broadcast. YouTube API: Bind a broadcast to a stream
4. Run the encoder and playlist on a cloud VM
A cloud VM can host an encoder that reads your nature-video playlist and continuously sends its output to YouTube. Choose a VM and region based on the encoder workload, storage needs, and reliable network egress for your configured bitrate. The sources here do not establish a suitable provider, VM size, region, or price for every workload, so verify those choices against your own media and the provider’s current specifications.

- Store the source media persistently. Put the playlist and its video and audio files on storage that remains available after a VM reboot. Keep a backup of the playlist and any encoder configuration needed to rebuild the process.
- Configure the encoder for the selected output. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance to choose resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval. Do not treat the VM’s available bandwidth as a substitute for configuring the encoder correctly. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest and transcodes the incoming stream into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Point the encoder at YouTube. Configure the ingest destination and stream key using YouTube’s current Live Control Room instructions. Keep credentials out of files and logs that other people can read.
- Loop the playlist deliberately. Confirm the encoder reaches the end of the playlist and starts it again, with no unintended gaps or long black frames. Check that the audio level and transitions are acceptable across the loop boundary.
- Arrange automatic startup and recovery. Use a process supervisor or boot-time mechanism to launch the encoder after a VM restart and reload the playlist. For example, Google Compute Engine supports startup scripts for work that should run when a VM boots. A boot script can relaunch software, but a process restart, VM restart, or even a multi-zone design cannot by itself promise that viewers will never see an interruption. Google Cloud: Run startup scripts on VM instances
For wider outage resilience, Google Cloud describes distributing systems across zones or regions. That is a design principle, not a turnkey guarantee for a livestream: you still need to design how a second encoder obtains the playlist, takes over the stream, and responds to failures. Google Cloud Architecture Framework: Reliability
5. Choose protocol-specific settings carefully
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the selected protocol rather than copying settings from a different ingest mode. In particular, the YouTube DASH encoder guide specifies MP4 with H.264/AAC and WebM with VP8 or VP9 plus Vorbis or Opus among supported combinations. For DASH, it calls for closed GOPs, recommends a GOP size of about two seconds, and sets an upper bound of less than eight seconds. Those GOP details are specific to that DASH guide; do not treat them as universal requirements for every YouTube ingest protocol. YouTube Live Streaming API: DASH ingest encoding guide

6. Test the stream before making it routine
- Start early. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. These are planning recommendations, not guarantees that a stream will be ready by a particular time. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips
- Check the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed, the intended broadcast is associated with it, and the image and sound are present.
- Check who can watch. Test the broadcast’s visibility and viewer access from an account or browser session that reflects the intended audience.
- Watch the health indicators. Monitor audio and video quality in Live Control Room rather than assuming that a running encoder process means the public feed is healthy.
- Check recording behavior. Confirm whether the archive behavior you need is enabled and whether the broadcast is available as expected after a test. Do not assume your cloud playlist or VM is also a YouTube archive.
- Exercise recovery. In a controlled test, confirm that the encoder starts after a VM reboot and restores the intended playlist and stream configuration. Verify the public feed after any restart.
7. Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room does not show an incoming feed | The encoder is not running, the ingest destination or stream key is wrong, or the cloud VM cannot reach the ingest service. | Check the encoder process and logs, verify the key and destination in Live Control Room, and confirm the VM has outbound network access. If the key was exposed, replace it and update the encoder. |
| The feed is visible to the encoder but YouTube reports poor stream health | Output settings may not suit the selected resolution or the available network connection may be unstable. | Compare the encoder’s resolution, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe settings with YouTube’s current guidance. Check the VM’s actual network performance while the stream is running. |
| The picture or sound is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder | YouTube may have detected third-party content, including content for which the channel has not been allowlisted. | Review the stream’s video and audio rights, check YouTube’s copyright notices, and ask the rights owner to confirm any necessary Content ID allowlisting. |
| The encoder stops after a VM reboot | The process is not configured to launch at boot, or the startup mechanism cannot find the playlist or configuration. | Check the startup script or process supervisor, persistent file paths, permissions, and logs. Test the restart again and confirm the feed appears in Live Control Room. |
| The encoder runs, but the playlist stops at the final file | Looping may not be enabled or the playlist may not be restored after a restart. | Check the encoder’s playlist and repeat behavior, then test both the end-of-playlist transition and a VM reboot. |
| A cloud or zone failure interrupts the stream | A single VM and a process restart do not cover every infrastructure failure. | Restore service manually or implement and test a broader recovery design, including persistent media and an explicit failover path. Multi-zone or multi-region architecture can improve resilience but does not guarantee a continuous public broadcast. |
