To run a Malayalam radio station on YouTube around the clock, send a continuous audiovisual feed from an eligible, verified channel through an encoder such as OBS Studio. Keep the encoder, internet connection and power available; use artwork or other visuals you have permission to broadcast; and clear the rights for every recording and composition. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches, so a music license alone may not prevent an interruption unless the rights owner has also allowlisted your channel through Content ID.
What you need before you start
- An eligible YouTube channel: YouTube requires channel verification, no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Check the current requirements and activation flow at YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guide; allow time for activation before your planned launch.
- An encoder: Software such as OBS Studio sends your audio and video to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- A video signal: A radio stream still needs an audiovisual feed. Use a station logo, schedule, presenter camera or visual loop that the station is authorized to use.
- Continuous infrastructure: The encoder and network equipment need power and a stable internet connection for the stream to remain live. A wired connection may help where Wi-Fi is unreliable. A UPS can provide brief backup power, but size it for the equipment load and the runtime you need; it does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
- Rights documentation: Confirm permissions for the music, jingles, interviews, artwork and other third-party material, including both live streaming and replay/archive use in the territories where the stream is available.
Set up the stream in YouTube and OBS
- Verify the channel and confirm eligibility. Complete YouTube’s channel verification and check for live-stream restrictions. For a first stream, follow the current activation flow in YouTube Studio and schedule enough time for any activation requirements.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room, create or select the live stream, and find its server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Configure OBS as the encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. If configuring a custom server, use the server URL supplied by YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides the stream details and prompts for connecting the encoder.
- Add the station’s audio and a permitted visual. Route the station’s program audio into OBS and add an authorized image, schedule, camera or visual loop. Check that the audio is present and that the video feed is not blank before going live.
- Choose settings your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS and currently supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps; for RTMP/RTMPS it lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its encoder guidance recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), 44.1 kHz stereo audio and 128 kbps stereo audio. The H.264 video bitrate examples below are YouTube recommendations, not mandatory minimums.

For other resolutions or codecs, use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance. A static station image does not require the same visual detail as a moving program, so choose a stable, sustainable configuration rather than a higher resolution simply because it is available.
- Test before committing to continuous operation. Send a representative test with similar audio levels and visual motion to the real program. Check stream health in Live Control Room, listen for clipping or dropouts, and confirm that the picture and sound stay synchronized. YouTube recommends about 20% spare upload capacity beyond the stream bitrate; see its streaming tips.
- Go live from the control room. Start the encoder, confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed, then follow the Live Control Room prompts to start the broadcast. Keep the stream key private and monitor stream health after launch.
- Plan for recording and recovery. Keep an independent local recording if you need an archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured. That is an archive qualification, not a stated maximum stream duration; see YouTube’s archive guidance.
Clear music rights before broadcasting
Do not assume that music played legally on a terrestrial Malayalam radio station is automatically cleared for a YouTube livestream or its replay. The permissions needed depend on the catalogue, the territories served, and whether the use is live, archived or both. Confirm rights for the recordings and compositions, and retain a rights log covering songs, interviews, jingles and other third-party material.

YouTube also says that if you have licensed third-party content for a stream, you should ask the owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including music licensing rights, and to meet applicable regulatory requirements in the relevant territories. Monitor the full chain
A continuous broadcast depends on more than OBS: the audio source, encoder, internet connection, power and YouTube ingest all need attention. Check Live Control Room stream health and listen to the broadcast during operation. YouTube advises a reliable connection and sufficient outbound bandwidth; leave the recommended upload headroom rather than sizing the connection exactly to the video bitrate.

Prepare for outages and restarts
Decide who will respond if the audio source fails, OBS closes, the network drops or power is interrupted. Test the station’s restart procedure and keep access to the stream key limited to people who need it. A UPS may help bridge short outages for the encoder and network equipment, but its runtime depends on the actual load and battery capacity.

Choose an archive schedule deliberately
If keeping the YouTube replay matters, schedule shorter sessions rather than relying on one stream longer than 12 hours, which YouTube says may not be captured. Record locally as a separate backup and verify that the station has rights for replay and archive use, not only the live transmission.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube will not enable live streaming: Check channel verification, the live-stream restrictions history and the current age and activation requirements in YouTube’s eligibility guide.
- The Live Control Room receives no signal: Confirm OBS is running, the correct server URL and current stream key are entered, and the encoder is sending. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- The stream buffers or loses connection: Check available upload capacity, network stability and competing traffic. Reduce output bitrate or resolution to a sustainable setting, preserve upload headroom, and review YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Audio is missing, distorted or out of sync: Check the OBS audio source and levels, confirm the station feed is reaching the encoder, and test with a representative program before resuming a long broadcast. YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps stereo audio.
- The live feed is interrupted after a music match: Review the match notice, confirm the relevant live and archive permissions, and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where applicable. A license alone may not prevent an automated interruption.
- A long stream has no YouTube replay: YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording for dependable archive preservation and plan shorter sessions when a YouTube replay is important.
