Use Puppeteer to open each product page, wait for its visible price, and save a consistently sized screenshot under a dated filename. Schedule the script to run daily, then monitor for failures and missing captures: a scheduled start is not a guarantee that every run will begin exactly on time.
What the daily job should do
A useful price-monitoring screenshot is a dated visual record, not proof that a price was successfully extracted or that the page was unchanged. Keep the capture process predictable: maintain an allowlist of product URLs and per-page price selectors; use the same viewport; wait for the price element to appear; and record success or failure for every target.
The example below is an adaptable implementation pattern, not a tested script for any particular retailer. Selectors, page behavior, access requirements, and storage depend on each target site.

Build the capture script
1. Install Puppeteer and configure targets
In a new Node.js project, install Puppeteer with npm install puppeteer. Puppeteer’s browser setup can vary by deployment environment; use the installation instructions for your environment if the browser executable is not available.

Create targets.json with only the pages you are authorized to access. Set a selector that matches the displayed price on each page; inspect the page and update it if the site changes its markup.

2. Capture each page and record its outcome
Save the following as capture.js. It sets the viewport before navigation, waits for a visible price element rather than relying on a fixed sleep, and writes a timestamped full-page PNG. A missing price is recorded as a failure instead of being silently treated as a valid capture.

The viewport is set before navigation because Puppeteer notes that some sites do not expect layout resizing after navigation. Keep it fixed across runs for more comparable images. See the Puppeteer Page API.
3. Choose a readiness condition per site
domcontentloaded only indicates that the initial document has been parsed; client-rendered prices may appear later. The selector wait addresses that case. Do not replace it with a universal delay: a fixed sleep can waste runtime on quick pages and still be too short on slow ones.

Some Puppeteer examples use networkidle2, but pages with persistent network activity may never become idle. If the price is still changing after its element appears, consider a site-specific condition such as waiting for stable displayed text; define and test that condition for the target rather than assuming that a selector alone guarantees the final price.
Schedule the script once each day
Use GitHub Actions
GitHub Actions scheduled workflows use POSIX cron and run on the repository’s default branch. Add .github/workflows/daily-capture.yml:

if-no-files-found: warnThe cron expression requests a run at 07:17 UTC each day. Choose a time that suits your needs, and confirm the intended timezone: GitHub schedule cron is interpreted in UTC. GitHub warns that scheduled events can be delayed during high load, particularly near the start of an hour, and some queued jobs may be dropped. Scheduling at minute 17 avoids the top of the hour but does not guarantee exact timing. Check GitHub’s current workflow event documentation for schedule behavior and limits.

The workflow uploads the capture directory as a run artifact, including after a failure, so partial results can be inspected. Decide how long artifacts should be retained and whether you need durable storage outside CI; retention and alert delivery depend on your deployment design. The manifest and nonzero exit code make failed targets visible to workflow monitoring.
Monitor missing runs as well as failed runs
A failure notification only catches a run that started and reported failure. For a daily record, also check that a successful manifest exists for each expected date. Choose a notification destination and retention period appropriate to your environment; this example does not configure either. Test the alert path with a deliberate failure before relying on it.
Handle access, consistency, and operating costs
Check permission and use a restrained schedule
Review the target site’s terms and applicable permission requirements before collecting screenshots. Robots rules are guidance for automated clients, not access authorization: the IETF’s RFC 9309, published September 2022, states, “These rules are not a form of access authorization.” See the RFC 9309 Robots Exclusion Protocol. Do not treat an unblocked page or an allowed robots.txt path as proof that collection is authorized. Avoid unnecessary concurrency, and do not attempt to bypass access controls.

If a target requires an authorized login, keep credentials in the scheduler’s secret store rather than source control, and use only access you are permitted to use. The example intentionally does not implement authentication because target requirements differ.
Make comparisons more meaningful
- Keep viewport dimensions, browser configuration, capture timing, and screenshot format consistent.
- Use a clear identifier and ISO timestamp in filenames, and preserve the manifest with the image.
- Capture the same page state each day; promotions, localization, consent state, and inventory may vary by session or region.
- Store captures in a location with sufficient retention and access controls for your monitoring purpose.
Browser startup and page loading consume runtime, and full-page captures can generate large files. Keep the target list focused, process sequentially unless you have a justified reason to parallelize, and review artifact size and retention. A screenshot documents what the browser rendered; it does not itself normalize currency, validate the price, or explain a change.

Frequently asked questions
Can this script tell me the price, not just show it?
No. It records screenshots and run status. Extracting and validating a numeric price is a separate task that needs site-specific parsing and checks.
Can I run it at the same time every day?
You can request a daily scheduled start, but GitHub Actions warns that load can delay or drop scheduled runs. Monitor for missing records instead of treating the cron time as an exact execution guarantee.
