To loop a playlist of nature videos on YouTube Live, use OBS Studio as the encoder: add one local video as a looping Media Source, or add several local files through OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. Connect OBS to a stream in YouTube Studio, check the preview, then start the broadcast. The playlist is made of files on your computer—not YouTube watch-page links—and your computer and internet connection must stay running while you stream.

Choose a single video or a playlist

Setup Best for What to know
Media Source with Loop enabled Repeating one nature video Fewer setup steps; OBS repeats the selected local file.
VLC Video with Loop Playlist enabled Rotating through multiple nature videos Requires VLC installed. You can set playlist order and shuffle behavior in the source.

OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes both source types and their looping controls: OBS Media Sources. Neither option turns a YouTube playlist of watch-page links into a live broadcast; the encoder plays media files accessible on your computer.

Check YouTube Live eligibility and prepare your files

Make sure the channel can livestream

YouTube’s current guidance says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. You must be at least 16 years old to livestream. First-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start: YouTube live streaming tips and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Gather local videos and confirm rights

Put the nature footage and any soundtrack you plan to use somewhere the computer can access reliably. Use media you created or have permission to stream, and keep records of those permissions. “Royalty-free” or freely available online does not by itself establish that a video or soundtrack is safe to broadcast.

Build the repeating feed in OBS

For one repeating nature video

  1. Open OBS and select the scene that will carry the stream, or create a new scene.
  2. In Sources, select + → Media Source, name it, and choose the local video file.
  3. Enable Loop. Keep Restart playback when source becomes active enabled if you want playback to restart whenever that source is activated.
  4. Check the preview. Confirm the video fills the intended canvas and that any audio plays at a sensible level.

For several videos in a playlist

  1. Install VLC on the computer if it is not already installed. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC.
  2. In Sources, select + → VLC Video.
  3. In the source properties, add the local video files to the playlist in the order you want them to play.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist. Leave shuffle disabled if you want the videos to play in the listed order.
  5. Check the preview and listen through transitions. Confirm the playlist advances and returns to the start as expected.

Keep the source files in place and available to OBS for the full broadcast. If you move or rename them, update the source before going live.

Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. The exact interface labels can change; YouTube’s encoder setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s stream settings into OBS’s streaming settings. The URL tells the encoder where to send video; the key associates the feed with your broadcast.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the value in OBS. See Manage live stream settings.
  4. Start streaming in OBS and wait for the feed to appear in YouTube Live Control Room’s preview.
  5. Check the preview, watch page, video framing, audio, and playlist playback before you announce or confirm the broadcast. If the event is scheduled or not set to auto-start, confirm Go Live in Live Control Room.

Test bandwidth, audio, and long-run stability

YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring its audio and video. Keep total streaming bitrate below the available upload bandwidth, with about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total bitrate recommended by YouTube’s Streaming tips. For example, if OBS is sending a total of 6 Mbps, aim for at least 7.5 Mbps of stable upload capacity; this is a calculation of the recommended headroom, not a YouTube bitrate preset.

  • Test the full playlist, including its transitions and return to the first item.
  • Listen for unexpectedly loud, quiet, or missing audio between videos.
  • Check the watch page on another device, such as a phone, rather than relying only on the OBS canvas.
  • Run a test long enough to expose computer, network, storage, or playback interruptions before promoting an extended stream.
  • Keep OBS and the computer running, prevent sleep, and use a stable network connection during the broadcast.

Protect the stream from copyright interruptions

YouTube scans live video and audio for third-party content. A detected match can replace the live image with a placeholder, interrupt or terminate the stream, and a copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end it. This can affect licensed media if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. For licensed third-party material, ask the owner to add the channel to the Content ID allowlist; YouTube explains the process and risks in Copyright issues with live streams.

Keep written rights records for both footage and music. If a match interrupts the broadcast, check YouTube’s Live Control Room notices and resolve the rights issue before restarting; repeatedly sending the same flagged material may not solve the problem.

Plan for archives and streams longer than 12 hours

YouTube automatically archives live streams that are under 12 hours when they end. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable, and a complete replay archive should not be assumed. See YouTube’s guidance on DVR on live streams and live stream settings. As an operational choice, ending and starting separate sessions can make archiving and troubleshooting easier than leaving a single broadcast indefinite.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
VLC Video is missing from OBS sources VLC is not installed or OBS cannot find it. Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check Sources → + again.
The video plays once and stops Loop is off, or the wrong loop control is enabled. For one file, check Loop in Media Source properties. For multiple files, check Loop Playlist in VLC Video properties.
A playlist item is missing or black The file was moved, renamed, inaccessible, or is not loading. Confirm the file still exists at the selected path, then remove and re-add it to the source playlist if needed.
OBS is streaming but YouTube has no picture or reports an error Wrong stream URL/key, the wrong YouTube event, or an encoder connection issue. Compare the OBS streaming settings with the active stream’s settings in YouTube Studio. Reset and replace the key if it may have been exposed.
Video or audio drops, buffers, or stutters Insufficient or unstable upload bandwidth, or an overloaded computer. Check OBS and Live Control Room status, reduce the total bitrate if necessary, and restore YouTube’s recommended upload headroom.
Broadcast is interrupted after a copyright notice YouTube detected third-party video or audio. Review the notice, verify rights, and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting before retrying.
Viewers cannot rewind or find a full replay The stream exceeded 12 hours or DVR/archive availability is limited. Set expectations accordingly; consider ending the session and starting another for a more manageable archive.
