You can keep prerecorded Catholic Mass videos playing on YouTube by sending them to a YouTube Live event through an encoder—or by using a cloud service built for continuous playback. Before setting up a loop, confirm that the parish has the rights to rebroadcast the recordings and that the relevant diocese considers the replay appropriate. If you need reliable YouTube archives, use sessions shorter than 12 hours: YouTube warns that longer streams may not be captured.
First, check liturgical guidance and rebroadcast rights
A working stream is not the same as permission or pastoral approval to replay a Mass. Ask the diocesan bishop or diocesan liturgy office about continuous replay of the specific recordings. USCCB guidance is for a US context; it prefers live transmission where possible, recommends that delayed broadcasts be taped as Mass is celebrated in a local worshipping community and broadcast later that same day, and says viewers should be told when a Mass is prerecorded. Its guidance also says prerecorded music is not appropriate for the liturgy. See the USCCB Guidelines for Televising the Liturgy.
Separately, establish that the parish may publicly retransmit the recording and all included material, such as music, readings, images, and performances. USCCB says no permission is required for livestreaming Mass and the Divine Office via social media under its policy for liturgical texts, but that policy does not cover musical settings or other musical compositions. It is not blanket clearance to rebroadcast any recording. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and can interrupt or terminate a stream; even a license may not prevent interruption unless the rights owner adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review USCCB’s liturgical-text copyright policy and YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance, and keep records of permissions and any allowlisting.
Choose a way to keep the stream running

YouTube lists OBS Studio among encoder options and also describes a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded video. A phone setup is a different use case: the USCCB live-streaming guide suggests a phone, tripod, and lapel microphone, and recommends horizontal orientation for YouTube, a stable tripod, reliable internet, and checking whether the phone needs a microphone adapter.

Set up a YouTube Live event with an encoder
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and an eligible streamer aged 16 or older. Check the current YouTube live-streaming requirements, since platform rules can change.
- Create an event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Choose the appropriate visibility and event details for the parish.
- Copy the connection details securely. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send video to the channel. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain this workflow.
- Load the authorized recording. Configure the encoder to play the video or playlist as its outgoing feed. Confirm that the playback is continuous if the software offers a loop option; the exact control varies by encoder.
- Preview before going live. Start sending the feed, then check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, audio, picture, and watch-page accessibility. Start the event only after the preview is correct. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.
- Monitor and retain a separate copy. Keep a local source recording and monitor the live feed. Do not treat YouTube as the only archive: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Plan session length and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams over 12 hours may not be captured. If the YouTube archive is important, end the event and start a new session well before the 12-hour mark, and keep the original files locally. Read YouTube’s archive guidance. Continuous playback and a dependable archive are separate goals: restarting sessions helps with the latter, while local recordings provide an independent copy.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The encoder will not connect: Check that the stream URL and key were copied correctly, the key has not been exposed or replaced, the channel is eligible to livestream, and the encoder is sending to the event shown in Live Control Room.
- The preview is blank or has no sound: Confirm that the recording is playing in the encoder, the correct video and audio sources are selected, and the event preview is receiving the feed before starting the event.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder: YouTube may have detected a third-party match. Review the copyright notice, confirm that the parish’s rights cover the matched material, and ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting. A license alone may not prevent automated interruption.
- The stream is live but no archive appears: Check the stream duration. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured; retain the local recording and use shorter sessions when the YouTube archive is required.
- The recording is not suitable for continuous replay: Pause the technical plan and consult the diocesan authority. A functioning loop does not settle whether repeated or delayed presentation fits local liturgical guidance.
