To run an A/B test without causing layout shift, assign the variant before the browser renders the page and include that version in the initial HTML. If you must choose the variant in the browser, apply it before first paint with a small render-blocking script, then make sure control and treatment reserve compatible space. Preventing flicker alone does not prevent CLS: the final variant can still move visible content.

Choose when and where the variant is assigned

The most stable approach is to decide eligibility and variant on the server, then render the selected version into the initial response. The browser’s first paint already shows the assigned variant, so users do not see the control briefly before it changes. Google Chrome’s flicker-free A/B testing guidance says server-side approaches avoid flicker without render-blocking cost. Where practical, determine experiment inclusion on the server too, so people outside the test do not receive unnecessary experiment code.

If server-side assignment is not feasible and the experiment changes content visible at initial render, a client-side option is to apply the decision before first paint. This prevents a flash of the original variant, but it makes the script part of the rendering path and can delay first paint.

Use a small render-blocking script only when needed

Google Chrome’s current guidance recommends placing the experiment script in the document <head>. For an external script, use both async and blocking="render": asynchronous loading lets HTML parsing continue, while render blocking holds the first paint until the variant is applied. Keep this script small and fast, limited to the assignment decision and visible change. Load heavier analytics and tracking separately.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not treat hiding the whole page with opacity: 0 until an experiment SDK responds as a general anti-flicker fix. It sacrifices progressive rendering, delays visible content, and can leave users able to click invisible content. If a legacy system requires page hiding, account for those costs and consider server assignment or limiting any wait to the experiment area.

Make control and treatment occupy compatible space

Flicker and cumulative layout shift (CLS) are different. Flicker is the visible flash of one variant before another replaces it. CLS measures unexpected movement of visible content. A pre-paint change can eliminate the flash while still pushing surrounding content when the treatment is taller or wider than the control. Conversely, a DOM change does not necessarily cause CLS if it does not move existing visible elements.

Before launch, compare both variants at the supported viewport sizes. Check text length, images, controls, and injected content. If their dimensions differ, constrain the layout or reserve a slot so content around it does not move when the variant appears. For variable or late-arriving content, CSS such as min-height or aspect-ratio can reserve space; choose values appropriate to each breakpoint. Avoid inserting new content above already visible material without making room first.

Reserve space only where the page can keep it stable. Removing an empty placeholder after a control or no-fill outcome can itself move content, so do not collapse reserved space if that removal shifts the page. See web.dev’s CLS optimization guidance for space-reservation techniques and their trade-offs.

Measure the whole page, not just the experiment component

Use repeatable lab checks to catch regressions, then validate with field data or real-user monitoring. Synthetic checks are useful for controlled page loads, but may miss post-load shifts and real differences in network, device, personalization, and interaction conditions. Inspect the page during load and after interactions that reveal experiment content.

  1. Run consistent control and treatment checks. Keep traffic segmentation consistent and test relevant devices, viewport sizes, and states.
  2. Inspect layout-shift records in browser developer tools. Use the records to investigate the likely cause of movement, not merely the elements that ended up displaced.
  3. Validate across the page lifecycle. Include field measurement or real-user monitoring so post-load shifts and interaction effects are represented.
  4. Use the page-level guardrail. web.dev recommends CLS of 0.1 or less at the 75th percentile, segmented across mobile and desktop. This is a target for the whole page, not just the experiment area; check whether the experiment correlates with movement even when the overall page meets the threshold.

A passing lab load does not establish that shifts are absent after load. Google’s Publisher Tag measurement guidance also emphasizes considering layout shift in measurement beyond a single initial load.
