You can loop a playlist in OBS Studio, but that does not mean an old PC can decode the files, render the scene, encode 4K at 60fps, and upload continuously. Check all four constraints before relying on it. YouTube recommends 35 Mbps ingest for AV1 or H.265 at 4K60, or 50 Mbps for H.264; the right choice also depends on what your PC can encode and your connection can sustain.
What determines whether an old PC can handle 4K60?
A 24/7 playlist stream has several separate workloads: reading the files, decoding their video and audio, composing the OBS scene, encoding the outgoing stream, and maintaining a stable upload. A PC may manage one task and fail at another. OBS can loop a playlist, but that feature alone says nothing about whether a particular computer can keep up.
- Source decoding: Check the playlist files’ codecs, resolution, and frame rate. OBS’s “Use hardware decoding when available” option helps only if the installed GPU supports decoding that media format.
- Encoding: A hardware encoder can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. It does not guarantee that the PC can decode the source or sustain the full OBS workload. Available encoder options depend on the installed hardware and software.
- Upload: Measure sustained upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube’s published bitrates are recommendations for encoder ingest, not a guarantee of playback quality or an India-specific ISP requirement.
- Continuous operation: Heat, power interruptions, software faults, and network instability matter more over a long unattended run than during a brief test.
OBS Project’s Media Sources guide explains the VLC source and its media options; OBS Project’s hardware encoding guide describes the role of hardware encoders.

- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC video source requires VLC to be installed. Use the VLC source rather than assuming that a playlist file will loop by itself.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video Source and add the files you want played. Confirm that the files open and play correctly before configuring the live output.
- Enable looping. In the source’s properties, enable Loop Playlist. OBS restarts the source after its media files finish.
- Check the media. Record each file’s codec, resolution, and frame rate. If the source format is unsupported by the PC’s hardware decoder, decoding may load the CPU even if a hardware encoder is selected.
- Choose an output encoder. In OBS output settings, select a hardware encoder supported by the installed GPU or CPU if one is available. Otherwise, the available software encoder may place substantial load on an older CPU. Do not assume a GPU upgrade will solve decoding, network, or thermal limits.
- Connect the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it.
- Set the ingest options. Configure constant bitrate (CBR), set the keyframe interval to two seconds, and do not exceed four seconds. YouTube’s encoder guidance allows up to 60fps. Match the output resolution and codec to the stream you intend to send and to your hardware’s capabilities.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Start a test stream with motion and audio similar to the actual playlist. Watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS for dropped or lagged frames and encoder overload. Observe temperature and network stability during a longer trial; a short successful test does not establish 24/7 reliability.
See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its current recommendations. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health.

Choose a bitrate your encoder and upload can sustain
YouTube’s published recommended ingest rates vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. These are YouTube recommendations, not a measured connection requirement for every Indian ISP. A speed test should measure upload, and the connection needs enough stability and headroom for continuous use and other network traffic.
| Output | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 4K / 2160p at 60fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 4K / 2160p at 30fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 60fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
The figures are from YouTube Help’s encoder recommendations, current as accessed in 2026. They describe ingest settings; they do not promise that viewers will receive a particular quality. At 4K, YouTube says the option to improve for low latency is unavailable. See YouTube Help for the full table and current guidance.

Check the stream before committing to 24/7 operation
- Run a speed test that reports upload performance, preferably at the time and on the connection the stream will use. A download result is not a substitute.
- Confirm the selected codec is supported by the chosen encoder and that the source files can be decoded without persistent lag.
- Watch both OBS statistics and YouTube stream health while sending representative footage. A static or low-motion clip may not reveal problems that appear with busier video.
- Check for dropped frames, rendering or encoding overload, temperature rise, audio gaps, and changes in upload performance.
- Run a longer trial before depending on the PC overnight or unattended. Even a clean trial cannot guarantee indefinite reliability.
Troubleshoot common 4K60 failures
OBS plays the playlist, but the stream stutters
Playlist looping only confirms that OBS can restart the media source. Check whether the PC is struggling to decode the source or encode the output. Try a hardware decoder if the GPU supports the file’s format, and select a supported hardware encoder where available. Review OBS and YouTube stream-health indicators during playback.
YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream disconnects
Check sustained upload bitrate and stability, not download speed. Ensure the chosen bitrate matches the codec and resolution, use RTMPS if supported, and check for other devices or applications consuming upload capacity. A connection that briefly reaches the target may still be unsuitable for a continuous stream.

The PC becomes hot or encoder overload appears
Reduce the workload while diagnosing: verify that the output really needs to be 4K60, check whether a supported hardware encoder is available, and test a lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate output. Do not treat a hardware encoder as proof that the rest of the video pipeline is within capacity.
The playlist stops or does not restart
Confirm that the VLC source is installed and configured, that all playlist files are accessible, and that Loop Playlist is enabled. Test the source through a full playlist cycle before depending on it unattended.

When a cloud loop is a better fit
If the old PC cannot sustain decoding, encoding, heat, or network demands—or you do not want a home computer and connection to run continuously—a hosted loop is an alternative. A VPS is another possibility for people comfortable managing a server, but reliable 4K60 upload from India depends on the provider and plan; the available information does not establish a particular VPS choice.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is the first option to consider for a hosted YouTube playlist: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running without leaving your computer on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Its monthly price is $9.99 per month. Indian customers can pay by UPI or card. Check current service terms and confirm that your source file and intended stream fit them. Learn about StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
