You can loop a local video in OBS and send it to YouTube Live from a used desktop, but the machine and internet connection must handle the actual 4K60 workload. For YouTube’s H.264 settings, use a 35 Mbps video bitrate, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; then test the specific PC and upload connection before relying on a long stream.
What you need before you start
- A used desktop that can sustain your chosen encoder, 2160p resolution, 60 fps, and scene complexity. OBS launching successfully does not prove it can stream at those settings.
- A local video file to loop. OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream, with live streaming enabled, and its stream key.
- A stable outbound internet connection with sufficient upload capacity for the stream.
There is no universal minimum used-PC CPU or GPU established for this workload. Compare candidate machines by their available hardware encoders and supported codecs, sustained performance at the target settings, condition, and price—not by CPU generation or Windows compatibility alone.
Set up YouTube Live first
- Enable live streaming early. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Its live-stream tips also require channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Start at YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream. Copy the stream key and keep it private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room during a test before the intended long run.
Configure OBS to loop the video
- Add the clip: in OBS, use the Sources panel’s + button and choose Media Source. Create a new source, browse to the local video file, and confirm it appears in the preview.
- Enable looping: open the Media Source properties and select Loop. The source will restart when the clip reaches its end. Use Use hardware decoding when available only if supported; this setting uses the GPU to decode the file and is separate from encoding the outgoing stream.
- Set the canvas and output: in OBS Settings → Video, set the base (canvas) and output resolution to 3840×2160, and set the frame rate to 60. Confirm the source fills the canvas as intended; scaling a lower-resolution clip to 4K does not add detail.
- Choose an encoder: in Settings → Output, select an encoder that the PC supports and that YouTube accepts. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS. If choosing H.264, set the video bitrate to 35,000 Kbps (35 Mbps), rate control to CBR, and keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Encoder options vary by hardware and OBS version, so verify the settings actually available on the used PC.
- Set color and audio: for SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Set stereo audio to 128 Kbps; AAC or MP3 audio is accepted for RTMP/RTMPS. Check that the clip’s sound is present and at a sensible level.
- Connect OBS to YouTube: in OBS Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, then enter the stream key or connect the account if that option is available. Use RTMPS where the service configuration allows it; YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS transport.
- Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and verify that the YouTube preview shows the expected picture, motion, and audio before making the broadcast public.
YouTube transcodes incoming live video into different output formats for viewers, so your incoming 4K signal does not mean every viewer receives 4K. At 4K, YouTube does not offer its low-latency option; streams use normal latency. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and recommended live encoder settings.

OBS explicitly cautions that compatible system requirements do not guarantee a machine can stream or record at the desired settings. Performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, but validate the exact 4K60 configuration you intend to run. See OBS system requirements.

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
- Load the actual clip and scene, select the intended encoder, and configure 3840×2160 at 60 fps.
- Run a realistic test long enough to reveal sustained encoding or playback trouble. Use similar motion and audio to the planned stream, as YouTube recommends.
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator, and check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages.
- If the PC cannot sustain the selected encoder and output without recurring problems, lower the stream settings or use a more capable machine rather than assuming the stream will stabilize during a longer run.
Measure upload capacity, not just the advertised plan
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom beyond the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. For one 35 Mbps H.264 stream and no backup stream, that works out to at least 42 Mbps of available upload capacity as a practical minimum under the tested conditions. If you configure a backup stream, include its bitrate before adding the 20% margin. Shared network use can reduce the capacity available to the PC, and upload speed may be lower than download speed.
Test outbound speed and stability at the desktop’s streaming location and at the time you expect to broadcast. An advertised download rate does not establish that the upload link can sustain the stream. In India, actual upload capacity and power reliability depend on your location and provider; no single ISP or plan can be recommended universally from these figures. A wired Ethernet connection is a reasonable option for connecting the desktop to the router, but it cannot compensate for insufficient bandwidth.

Common problems and fixes
- OBS dropped frames rise; connection indicator turns yellow or red: OBS says this points to an unstable connection to the streaming server or a connection that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Retest upload capacity, reduce competing network use, and check that the stream bitrate fits the available upload bandwidth.
- Stream starts but video stutters or encoding falls behind: the used PC may not sustain the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene together. Re-test with the real clip; try a supported hardware encoder if available, or reduce output demands.
- The video stops instead of repeating: reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled and the file path still points to the clip.
- YouTube does not show a preview: check that live streaming is activated, the correct stream key is entered, and OBS is connected to the intended YouTube stream. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Audio is missing or unsuitable: check the source audio in OBS, the selected output track, and the stream audio bitrate and format.
Protect the channel and the loop’s content
A looping video is still a public YouTube livestream, so use only footage, music, and other material you have rights to broadcast. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and its channel monetization policies if monetization matters to you. Repeating a clip does not itself establish that the channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements.
