You can loop a local video on YouTube Live with OBS Studio: add it as a Media Source, enable Loop, connect OBS to a YouTube stream key, and start streaming. For 4K at 60fps, YouTube recommends 35 Mbps video bitrate with AV1 or H.265, or 50 Mbps with H.264. Those are video bitrates—not guaranteed internet-plan speeds—so test your laptop and stable upload capacity at the location and time you plan to stream.
Before you start: check channel access and laptop capacity
Make sure YouTube Live is enabled
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so activate it well before your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Do not assume a gaming laptop can sustain 4K60
OBS Studio’s basic Windows requirements include Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU. Meeting them does not establish that a system can stream at a particular resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. OBS says, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Choose an encoder supported by your laptop, then test the complete setup. See OBS system requirements.
Set up a looping video in OBS
- Create a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or manage a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the service and connect using the stream details, or enter the server URL and stream key if configuring it manually. Treat the key like a password; anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Add a scene and local video. In OBS, add a scene, then add a Media Source and select the video file from your laptop.
- Enable looping. Open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. OBS documents support for video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. For a playlist, add a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; if OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC. Details: OBS Media Sources.
- Check the scene. Confirm the video fits the canvas as intended and that its audio behaves as expected. A loop restarts the local file when playback ends; it does not make the video live action from a camera.
Use YouTube’s recommended 4K60 encoder settings
For 4K (3840 × 2160) at 60fps, YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists these video bitrate recommendations and minimums:

| Video codec | Recommended bitrate | Minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s video-bitrate figures, not a measurement of your Indian ISP’s upload performance or a promise that a particular plan will hold a stream. Measure upload at the actual streaming location, leave headroom for variation, and test again around the time you expect to broadcast. No single laptop specification or codec is established as best for every setup.
- Resolution and frame rate: Set the output to 3840 × 2160 at 60fps.
- Rate control: Use CBR.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: Use RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Codec: Use AV1, H.265/HEVC, or H.264 if your available encoder supports it. Codec availability and encoder load depend on your laptop.
- SDR color: YouTube’s advanced settings list Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth.

Test the real stream before broadcasting
- Run an upload-speed test on the laptop and connection you will actually use. Repeat it at the intended broadcast location and, if possible, near the planned streaming time.
- Start a test stream and use representative video motion and audio. Static footage alone may not reveal problems that appear with more demanding content.
- Check the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast.
- During the test, watch stream health and confirm that both video and audio are reaching YouTube as expected. YouTube’s guidance covers testing and monitoring in its live-streaming tips.
A wired connection may be a practical troubleshooting option if wireless connectivity is unstable, but it is not a universal requirement. The important check is whether your connection at the streaming location sustains the chosen bitrate without disruptive variation.

Troubleshoot a failed or unstable loop
- You cannot start the broadcast: Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel and that it meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements. If you have only just enabled Live for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check the stream URL and key in OBS against the details in the Live Control Room. If you reset the key in YouTube, update OBS with the new one.
- The video stops at the end: Reopen the Media Source properties and verify that Loop is enabled. For a playlist, check Loop Playlist on the VLC Video source and confirm VLC is installed in the matching 64-bit or 32-bit version for OBS.
- Frames drop or the stream becomes unstable: Check OBS and YouTube stream health while live. Compare your measured, stable upload capacity with the selected video bitrate, allow headroom for variation, and test whether a lower output load or a supported hardware encoder improves stability.
- The laptop struggles despite meeting OBS requirements: System requirements are only a baseline. Re-test with the exact resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder, and scene you intend to use; a complex scene or a different encoder can change the workload.
- The stream feels delayed: At 4K, YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable, so normal latency applies.
Keep the loop running without leaving the laptop on
If you want the YouTube loop to continue while your laptop is off, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud rather than from OBS on your computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded video; it does not broadcast from a camera.
