You can run a continuous white-noise livestream by creating an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, connecting streaming software with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, and monitoring the broadcast. But a single stream lasting more than 12 hours may not be archived, very long streams may have limited DVR rewind, and a public livestream is not a substitute for safe-sleep practices. Before you start: separate the broadcast from a baby’s sleep setup
A YouTube stream is a way to deliver sound to a viewer’s device; it does not determine the volume or exposure in a baby’s room. Those depend on the playback device, its level and position, and how long it plays. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) discusses possible benefits of infant sleep machines but also raises sound-level concerns. If using one, the AAP advises placing it as far from the infant as possible, setting the volume as low as possible, and limiting use duration. Its guidance does not establish one safe decibel level or duration for every speaker, room, and infant. Read the AAP policy statement and its noise exposure guidance.
White noise does not replace safe sleep. CDC guidance is to place babies on their backs for every sleep, use a firm, flat sleep surface, room-share ideally until at least six months, and keep soft objects and loose bedding out of the sleep area. See CDC safe-sleep guidance.
What you need to start a YouTube livestream
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check that you can open Live Control Room before building the setup.
- Encoder software and a computer to run it. YouTube documents the encoder workflow but does not specify a required computer model.
- A static visual and an audio source you have the rights to use. A computer for 24/7 YouTube livestreaming is an equipment category to assess against your chosen encoder; there is no model or configuration guaranteed by YouTube in the cited guidance.
- A reliable internet connection with upload capacity above the total stream bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom above that bitrate.
- A local recording plan if you need a complete archive, because YouTube may not archive a stream that exceeds 12 hours.
How to set up the stream with an encoder
- Check live access. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Confirm the channel is eligible to livestream before proceeding. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe channel verification and restrictions.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In Live Control Room, create a stream and select an encoder workflow. YouTube supplies a server URL and stream key for the connection.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your broadcast. Do not publish it or include it in a screenshot; reset it if it is exposed.
- Configure the encoder. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder. Set the audio source to your original or properly licensed white-noise recording, add a static image or other visual, and configure output settings supported by your software and connection. YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify a universal bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval for this use case, so do not assume one setting suits every encoder, connection, and stream.
- Leave bandwidth headroom. Keep the total stream bitrate below available upload bandwidth; YouTube recommends 20% room above the bitrate. If other devices use the connection, account for their traffic too.
- Start early and inspect the preview. Start the encoder before the planned go-live time, check the Live Control Room preview for the intended visual and audio, then start the broadcast. Verify that viewers can reach the stream.
- Monitor and retain records. Follow YouTube’s live-streaming tips to monitor stream quality and confirm that any local recording is actually growing. Review YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
One long broadcast or planned shorter sessions?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on very long streams. The 12-hour figure is an archive caveat, not a stated maximum stream duration. YouTube does not specify a universally correct restart schedule, so choose a schedule around your archive needs and the interruption a transition may cause.

For either schedule, keep a local recording if completeness matters and inspect the resulting files rather than relying on YouTube’s archive alone. YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance describe the limits.
Clear the rights and monetization hurdles
Use audio you are entitled to livestream
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the creator to hold the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music licensing rights. Use original audio or obtain a license that covers the actual YouTube livestream use, the relevant territories, and continuous duration; keep documentation. A license for personal listening or a downloadable recording does not, by itself, establish permission for a public, continuous livestream. Read YouTube’s terms.

Do not count on monetization
Eligible channels may monetize live streams through ads and other features, but YouTube’s channel monetization policies also apply. Its inauthentic-content policy can make repetitive or mass-produced material ineligible, and its reused-content policy applies channel-wide. A loop of white noise is not guaranteed to qualify for monetization. Check the current YouTube channel monetization policies before planning revenue around it.
Troubleshooting common problems
- Live Control Room will not let you start: Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction has applied within the previous 90 days.
- The preview is blank or has no audio: Confirm the encoder is using the correct server URL and stream key, the intended audio source is selected, and the encoder is running. Check the preview before going live.
- The stream buffers or loses quality: Compare total stream bitrate with available upload bandwidth and restore YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check whether other devices are consuming upload capacity.
- The recording is missing or incomplete: A stream over 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Record locally and inspect the file; consider planned shorter sessions if YouTube archives matter.
- The stream stops unexpectedly: Check encoder and network status, then reconnect using the protected stream key. The available YouTube guidance does not establish guaranteed uptime or a universal restart interval.
- The audio is claimed or removed: Review the rights for every sound in the stream, including licenses for continuous public livestreaming and territories. Keep proof of permission and follow YouTube’s claim or restriction notices.
