To run prerecorded videos as a continuous YouTube Live feed with FFmpeg, list compatible clips in a concat-demuxer manifest, loop that input with -stream_loop -1, and send it to YouTube’s ingest URL with a supported live-encoding profile. The concat demuxer joins packets; it does not make mismatched files compatible. For a dependable unattended stream, check and normalize your files, test the output, monitor the host, and plan separately for YouTube’s archive limit.
What the concat demuxer does—and what it does not
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text manifest and presents its listed files in sequence as one input, adjusting timestamps so each follows the previous file. It is a packet-level join, not a general-purpose converter. FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, including matching codecs and time bases; differences in resolution, pixel format, audio presence, stream layout, or other codec parameters can cause errors or transition problems. Unequal audio and video durations, or incorrect file durations, can introduce timestamp gaps or artifacts. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation describes these requirements.
If all clips already match, packet-level concatenation can avoid re-encoding. If they do not, normalize them to a common profile first or use a filter-based concat workflow that re-encodes as needed. FFmpeg’s concat FAQ explains the distinction between the demuxer and concat filter.
Prepare and verify the playlist files
Check that the clips are compatible
Before building an unattended stream, inspect every clip with ffprobe. Compare stream count and order, video and audio codecs, time bases, resolution, pixel format, frame rate, and audio properties. The demuxer’s matching-stream requirement is the key test; a playlist that looks visually consistent may still contain a missing audio stream or different stream parameters.

If files differ, create normalized copies with the same video and audio configuration before using the manifest. A short local test that crosses every transition is easier to diagnose than discovering a mismatch during a live broadcast. The right output resolution and frame rate depend on the material and the YouTube stream profile you choose.
Create the manifest
Save a plain text file named playlist.txt alongside the clips, with one file directive per clip in the order you want them played:

Relative paths work well when the manifest and media stay in a controlled working directory. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters as required by the concat format. FFmpeg applies safe path handling by default. The example command below uses -safe 0, which permits paths the default rejects; use it only with a manifest and paths you trust. See the concat demuxer documentation for path safety details.

Set up YouTube Live and protect your stream key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live event and obtain its stream URL and stream key.
- Choose the stream resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; a custom stream key can be used when manual settings are needed. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube says it acts like a password and tells the encoder where to send your feed. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, or public post. If it is exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Use the ingest endpoint and key supplied for your event in the FFmpeg output URL. Do not copy the placeholder endpoint in the sample as if it were a real YouTube server.
Review YouTube’s live encoder settings before choosing values: recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for 1080p30; for 1080p60 it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. At 4K/2160p30, it lists 14 Mbps minimum and 42 Mbps recommended. These are settings-page recommendations, not guarantees of quality or a substitute for matching your actual output profile.

Run the looping FFmpeg command
This command is a starting pattern for an H.264/AAC FLV feed, not a universal profile. It transcodes to a common output rather than stream-copying the input, which can be useful when the playlist needs normalization. Confirm your FFmpeg build includes the named encoders, set output resolution and frame rate to suit your sources and YouTube event, and replace the output URL with the event’s actual ingest endpoint and key:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmp://SERVER/STREAM/KEY'
-rereads the prerecorded input at its native rate, which is appropriate when using files to simulate a live source.-stream_loop -1asks FFmpeg to loop the playlist input indefinitely.-f concat -i playlist.txtselects the concat demuxer and reads the manifest.-safe 0relaxes its default path restrictions; omit it where possible if your paths work with safe mode.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacencode video and audio. The example bitrate values are illustrative, not recommendations for every resolution or frame rate.-g 60sets the GOP length to 60 frames. At 30 fps that corresponds to a two-second interval; change the value with the selected frame rate so keyframes remain two seconds apart.-f flvwrites an FLV stream suitable for the RTMP-style output shown. YouTube’s current guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds; it also recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Configure your encoder accordingly and check YouTube’s current table for the selected profile.
The sample does not explicitly set output resolution or frame rate. Add the appropriate scaling and frame-rate settings if your normalized media does not already produce the profile selected in YouTube Live Control Room. Check your installed FFmpeg options with ffmpeg -h full if an option is unavailable or behaves differently in your build.

Test the signal before leaving it unattended
- Start with an unlisted test event, not a public broadcast.
- Confirm that both audio and moving video reach YouTube, including a transition between clips and the point where the playlist wraps to its beginning.
- Watch stream health and resolve any warning messages. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring the signal.
- Check upload capacity on the actual machine and network that will run FFmpeg. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total outgoing bitrate; a nominal internet-plan speed alone does not establish that the connection is stable enough.
- Verify that the playlist loops as intended and that timestamps and audio remain continuous at every transition.
Keep a 24/7 feed running and decide how to handle archives
FFmpeg does not by itself restart a crashed process or recover after a host reboot. For unattended operation, arrange process supervision outside FFmpeg so the command can be restarted after a failure, and make sure the host itself has reliable power and network access. These are operational safeguards, not features of the concat demuxer.

Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg rejects the manifest or cannot open a file
- Check that the manifest is plain text, each line uses the
filedirective, and paths are correct relative to the working directory. - Quote or escape filenames with spaces or special characters. If the default safe-path rules reject a path, use
-safe 0only when the manifest and every referenced file are trusted. - Check file permissions and confirm the FFmpeg process can read the media.
The stream fails at a clip boundary or develops audio/video gaps
- Compare stream count, codecs, time bases, resolution, pixel format, and audio properties across all files. The concat demuxer expects matching streams.
- Check clip durations and audio/video lengths. Incorrect duration information or unequal stream lengths can lead to timestamp problems.
- Normalize the files to a common profile or use a filter-based concat workflow when their properties differ; do not expect packet-level concatenation to convert them.
YouTube reports poor health, buffering, or an encoder warning
- Recheck bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR behavior, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder table.
- Measure available upload bandwidth on the streaming host and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Run another unlisted test and inspect YouTube’s warnings before switching back to a public event.
The feed stops after an FFmpeg or host failure
- Use an external process supervisor configured to restart FFmpeg after it exits, and confirm it can recover after a host restart.
- Inspect FFmpeg and supervisor logs to distinguish a process crash from an internet, source-file, or YouTube ingest problem.
- Keep a local recording if you need an independent copy; YouTube’s archive may not capture a session longer than 12 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a computer and home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. Your computer can be off, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
Every slot supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free day.
