To run a 24/7 YouTube video game music radio stream legally, get written permission for the actual use of every recording and composition, and ask the relevant rights owners to add your YouTube channel to their Content ID allowlists before you go live. A game’s soundtrack is not automatically cleared for a continuous radio-style broadcast just because gameplay may be streamed or other channels play the music. Rights and YouTube’s Content ID handling are separate: a license grants permission; allowlisting can help prevent an otherwise licensed stream from being interrupted.

This is practical guidance, not a legal opinion for every country. Music rights, ownership and permitted uses vary by catalog and territory. Confirm the rules for the places where your stream will be available and get qualified legal advice when needed.

Can I stream a video game soundtrack on YouTube?

Only if you have the rights needed for the particular music and the way you plan to use it. A soundtrack may involve separate rights in the sound recording (the master) and the underlying musical composition. Those rights can be controlled or administered by different parties, and a game publisher may not control every song in the game.

Permission for gameplay, personal listening, a soundtrack album, or a different streaming platform does not by itself establish permission for continuous audiovisual streaming on YouTube. YouTube’s game-content monetization guidance says creators need commercial-use rights granted by the publisher’s license to monetize game content; that guidance is not a blanket license for a soundtrack-only radio stream. Read the actual publisher terms and clear the music rights that apply to your format.

Which rights do you need to clear?

Rights question What to confirm
Sound recording (master) Who controls the specific recording or version you will play, and whether that party permits continuous YouTube livestreaming and any retained replay.
Musical composition Who controls or administers the underlying music, including any publisher, performing rights organization or collecting society whose permission is needed for the proposed use.
Additional incorporated music Whether the game’s soundtrack includes third-party songs or other material for which the publisher cannot grant all necessary rights.
Use and distribution terms Whether the permission covers continuous audiovisual streaming, monetization, the intended territories and term, and archived or on-demand playback.

YouTube’s music-rights guidance distinguishes master-use rights from rights in the musical work and notes that multiple parties may administer rights in a song. U.S. Copyright Office Title 17 materials likewise distinguish rights in musical works and sound recordings. The U.S. statutory framework does not determine the rules in other countries or identify the owners of a particular game track.

How to get permission before you launch

  1. Define the broadcast. Make a track list identifying each game, track and recording/version. Note the planned start and end dates, territories, whether the channel will be monetized, and whether YouTube will retain a replay.
  2. Identify the rights owners. For each track, establish who controls the master and who controls or administers the composition. Ask the publisher whether it can grant every permission needed; for third-party songs, labels, music publishers, composers or collecting societies may also be involved.
  3. Obtain a written grant for this exact use. Ask explicitly for continuous audiovisual livestreaming on YouTube, the specified territories and duration, monetization if applicable, and archived/on-demand playback if you intend to keep a replay. Have the rights holder confirm the scope; there is no universal game-music license that can be assumed to cover this format.
  4. Request Content ID allowlisting. Give each relevant rights owner the exact identity of your YouTube channel and ask it to add the channel to its allowlist. Keep written confirmation. YouTube says a licensed stream can still be interrupted when the channel has not been allowlisted.
  5. Plan the replay separately. If you will archive the livestream, make sure the written permission includes the retained video. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream ends.
  6. Keep a clearance record. Store the track list, grants, territory and term details, allowlist confirmations and correspondence in one place so you can verify coverage or respond to a claim.

What YouTube may do when it detects music

YouTube Help says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If it identifies third-party material, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop streaming it. If the material remains, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated; a copyright or Community Guidelines strike may also terminate it.

A Content ID match, claim or allowlist is not the same thing as permission. The license must come from the relevant rights owner or owners. Allowlisting addresses platform handling of a licensed channel; it does not create a rights grant. Even if you restrict a broadcast to territories where you believe you have rights, YouTube warns that an unallowlisted licensed stream may still be interrupted.

Game settings and test streams do not replace clearance

A game’s “stream-safe” setting, if it has one, may omit certain tracks, but it is not proof that every remaining audio element is cleared for a 24/7 radio channel. Check the feature’s exact scope and the publisher’s current terms. No particular game or setting can be assumed to provide the necessary rights.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a test stage before a broadcast. Use a test to check your technical setup, and prepare to stop, mute or replace a track if a rights issue appears. A successful test or the absence of an automated match does not prove that the music is cleared.

  • Permitted use: Does it expressly cover continuous live audiovisual streaming, monetization where relevant, and an archive or replay?
  • Territory and term: Where may the stream be viewed, and for how long does permission last?
  • Platform handling: Will the owner allowlist the exact YouTube channel, and how should you handle an erroneous claim?
  • Operational fit: Does the grant permit continuous playback, and does it explain whether tracks may be replaced or a broadcast interrupted?

These are questions to ask about a real catalog and its rights holders, not a claim that any particular licensing product is available.

Troubleshoot a licensed stream that is interrupted

What happens Likely issue What to do
YouTube shows a placeholder or warning during the livestream. A third-party match was detected; the channel may not be allowlisted, or the matched material may not be covered by the permission. Stop, mute or replace the track as needed. Check the match against your track list and written grant, then contact the relevant rights owner about coverage and allowlisting.
The channel has permission, but the live stream is still interrupted. YouTube says licensed third-party content can still trigger interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel. Confirm the exact channel identity was submitted and that the relevant owner completed allowlisting. Keep its written confirmation.
A claim appears on the archived livestream. Archive claims can be made after a live event ends, and the replay may not be covered even if the live transmission was. Check whether the grant includes the retained video and whether the claim concerns a track outside its scope. Resolve the issue with the rights holder using the permission records.
A test broadcast passes without a match. A test or lack of an automated match does not establish that rights have been cleared. Complete the rights and allowlisting workflow before launching the continuous stream.
