To run prerecorded videos around the clock on YouTube with subtitles, send a continuous feed from a local encoder, a hosted streaming service, or dedicated hardware. For the simplest subtitle setup, burn the text into each video before streaming. If viewers need to switch captions on or off, configure a supported live-caption workflow instead; an ordinary subtitle-file upload is not the same thing.
Choose how the stream will run
YouTube Live receives an encoded feed. The encoder plays your prerecorded video or playlist and sends it to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key for your broadcast. Choose the operating model based on what can stay powered and connected, how you will recover from interruptions, and whether you need selectable captions.

Decide whether subtitles should be selectable
Burned-in subtitles: simplest and widely compatible
Burned-in, or open, subtitles are part of the video picture. Prepare each source video with its timed text rendered into the image, then play the prepared files in your encoder or playlist. They remain visible to every viewer, but viewers cannot turn them off or choose another language.

Selectable live captions: separate caption setup required
For YouTube’s embedded live-caption workflow, configure the stream for EIA-608/CEA-708 captions and use an encoder that can send them. YouTube’s documentation currently describes one caption track for this workflow. YouTube also documents supported software workflows that send captions to a signed ingestion URL; it lists CaptionMaker and StreamText.Net. Check current YouTube and vendor instructions for compatibility before choosing either path.
A subtitle file uploaded to a regular YouTube video is a separate workflow; it does not, by itself, supply captions to a live encoder feed. YouTube describes automatic live captions as English-only and rollout-dependent, with latency and professional-caption conditions. They do not remain on the archive, so check eligibility in YouTube Studio and do not rely on them without testing your stream.

Set up the 24/7 YouTube Live feed
- Prepare the channel. Make sure live streaming is enabled for the channel well before launch. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Prepare and check your videos. Render burned-in subtitles into each file if you chose open captions. Check subtitle timing, legibility, and language, and make sure the playlist order and transitions work. If using selectable captions, confirm that your encoder or caption-delivery workflow supports the required format.
- Create the live stream in YouTube Studio. Create the stream and copy its stream URL and key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Choose output settings your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, and documents H.264 with constant bitrate. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match both the source and a reliable upload connection. YouTube transcodes a live feed for different viewer formats, but that does not compensate for an unstable connection from your encoder.
- Run a representative test. Test with the same kind of movement and audio as the real stream. Check the player on a separate device, including subtitle appearance or selectable captions, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages. Check the start, middle, and end of files and playlist transitions for mistimed text, silence, or blank intervals.
- Plan for interruptions and archives. Decide how the encoder or hosted service will restart if the feed drops, and how a continuous broadcast will be divided into replayable segments if needed. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup.
- Clear all content rights. Confirm that you have rights to every video and audio element, including music, for the intended use. YouTube scans live streams and may replace the live image, interrupt the feed, or terminate the stream for matching content. Even licensed material can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel.
Keep subtitles accurate through long playlists
- Use subtitle timing that matches the exact version and edit of each video; a changed intro, cut, or audio lead-in can make previously timed text inaccurate.
- Check transitions between files, not just the files individually. A brief gap or abrupt restart can leave viewers with silence, a blank image, or captions that no longer match the audio.
- For selectable captions, check that they appear in the live player on a separate viewer device. Do not assume a caption file attached to an uploaded video will be available in the live feed.
- Keep in mind that YouTube documents one embedded caption track in its 608/708 live workflow. If your audience needs multiple selectable languages, verify an appropriate current delivery method before launching.
Troubleshoot common problems
