You can run a prerecorded YouTube stream continuously from a Linux VPS using FFmpeg, but a ₹500 monthly sticker price alone does not establish that a server can handle the job. You also need enough monthly outbound bandwidth, suitable CPU for the chosen workflow, and a supervised process that can recover from failures. At 4 Mbps, a continuous 30-day stream sends about 1.3 TB before overhead; at 8 Mbps, about 2.6 TB.
This guide covers looping prerecorded video from a VPS—not a live camera capture setup. The FFmpeg example is a documented starting pattern, not a tested end-to-end deployment. Confirm your provider’s current limits and test your own file, settings, and stream health.
Decide whether FFmpeg will relay or transcode your video
For a prerecorded loop, first get the media file onto the VPS or arrange a reliable way for it to be available there. How much server CPU you need depends on whether FFmpeg can send the existing encoded audio and video as-is or must encode them again.
- Relaying an already-encoded file: avoids the repeated video-encoding workload, but stream-copy suitability depends on the file’s codecs, container, timestamps, and YouTube ingest requirements.
- Transcoding: decodes and re-encodes media to the output settings you choose. This uses more CPU; a small VPS may not sustain the desired resolution and frame rate. Test the actual workload rather than assuming a listed vCPU count is sufficient.
The example below shows FFmpeg’s generic file-to-RTMP pattern. It does not specify stream-copy or a full transcoding configuration, because the right choice depends on the input file and target output.

Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Enable live streaming ahead of time. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream setup instructions.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Retrieve the ingest server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Configure FFmpeg with those values; do not use an example endpoint as if it were your actual YouTube destination.
- Keep the key secret. Treat it like a password. Do not commit it to a public repository or include it in public documentation. Avoid leaving it in shell history or logs where practical, and restrict access to the account and server that can use it.
- Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when YouTube supplies one. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts stream data into and through Google’s servers. The current encoder guidance is at YouTube’s encoder settings page.
- Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room after starting the encoder. Test with media whose motion and audio are similar to the intended stream.
Choose encoder settings that fit the source and connection
YouTube’s published recommendations below are not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode continuously at that quality. Match the output to the source, available CPU, and a reliable upload path. The bitrate figures are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations; the settings page also lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codecs.

These settings are drawn from YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Check the live health messages during a test; a nominal setting cannot compensate for an unstable server connection or an encoder that cannot keep up.

Replace it with the current ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, preferably using the RTMPS endpoint YouTube provides.
This syntax follows FFmpeg’s protocol documentation; it is not a tested end-to-end YouTube command or a complete unattended-service configuration. Do not publish a real key in a command example. Test with your actual file and verify the output in YouTube Studio before relying on it.
Make an unattended VPS setup recoverable
A command that starts successfully is not yet a dependable 24/7 service. Plan how the stream behaves after a disconnect, process crash, server reboot, file error, or exhausted disk. The following are operational checks for an unattended setup, not a tested deployment recipe:
- Process supervision: use a service manager or other supervisor to start the process at boot and restart it after an unexpected exit. Set restart behavior deliberately so a persistent configuration error does not create an endless restart loop.
- Logging and observation: retain enough FFmpeg and service logs to diagnose failures, while ensuring they do not expose the stream key. Check YouTube’s stream health as well as whether the local process is running.
- Recovery testing: test what happens when the process is stopped, the VPS reboots, and the network connection drops. Confirm the encoder reconnects and that YouTube receives the resumed stream.
- Media and storage checks: confirm the input remains readable, playlist files are present, and free disk space is sufficient for the media and logs.
- Key security: restrict who can read configuration files containing the key. Avoid placing it in a public script, repository, or broadly accessible log.
Automatic process restarts do not by themselves prove that YouTube accepted the reconnect or that the stream is healthy. Verify recovery in Live Control Room.

Estimate monthly bandwidth before choosing a ₹500 VPS
For a bitrate held continuously over 30 days, the approximate outbound transfer is substantial. These are decimal-unit arithmetic estimates for payload, not measured provider usage; protocol overhead and retransmissions can raise actual transfer.

Before buying, verify the checkout total and renewal price, tax, included monthly egress, overage or throttling terms, CPU allocation, storage, server location, and support or restart policies. A “1 Gbps port” describes link rate; it does not establish a monthly data allowance or prove the VPS can sustain your encoder workload. Neither listing is independently verified for this use.

Keep an always-running encoder distinct from an archived session
YouTube’s help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not promise a complete archive for one uninterrupted session longer than 12 hours. A continuously running FFmpeg process and a session YouTube archives are separate concerns.
If preserving archives matters, consider a schedule or restart strategy that keeps each session within YouTube’s documented under-12-hour window, then verify the current behavior in Live Control Room. Do not assume that an encoder running past that point will produce one complete archive.

Yes. FFmpeg can be used in playlist workflows, but the exact input and looping configuration depends on your files and desired behavior; test the playlist and reconnect handling before leaving it unattended.
Does a VPS with a 1 Gbps port guarantee enough bandwidth for a 24/7 stream?
No. Port rate and monthly included outbound transfer are different limits. Estimate egress from your chosen bitrate and confirm the provider’s allowance and terms.
