You can use Google Drive to store the videos for a 24/7 YouTube stream, but YouTube Live does not document a Drive folder or share link as a continuous playlist input. The dependable do-it-yourself setup is to make the video files available to an always-on computer, play them through an encoder, and send that live feed to YouTube. Check the files, encoder preview, and stream health before leaving the broadcast unattended.

How the setup works

Google Drive is the storage layer; an encoder supplies YouTube with the live audio-video feed. YouTube distinguishes the incoming stream from the viewer-facing broadcast, and its documentation does not describe pasting a Drive link into Live Control Room to run a continuous playlist. A share link should not be treated as an encoder-ready media URL.

For a practical setup, download or sync the files so the encoder can read them, then configure playback and streaming on an always-on computer. This local-copy approach is implementation guidance based on Drive’s documented storage and playback roles, not a YouTube requirement. It avoids relying on a live retrieval of each video from Drive during playback, but the computer, encoder, network, and YouTube connection still need monitoring.

Prepare the playlist in Google Drive

  1. Upload and organize the source videos. Put the files in the intended playback order and keep a separate record of that order. Google Drive supports video uploads and browser playback.
  2. Check file playback. Drive lists support for WebM (VP8/Vorbis), MPEG4/3GPP/MOV (H.264/MPEG-4 and AAC), AVI, MPEGPS, WMV, FLV, MTS, and OGG. A listed format may not work on every device, so test the specific files on the computer that will run the encoder.
  3. Make an encoder-accessible copy. Download the media or use a sync arrangement that makes complete files available on the encoder computer. Confirm each file is fully present and plays from that computer before broadcast; do not assume that a visible Drive item is already available offline.
  4. Check capacity and connectivity. Make sure the computer has room for the files and that the encoder can continue reading them in sequence. A local copy reduces dependence on retrieving media from Drive while live; it does not remove the need for a stable internet connection to YouTube.

Drive’s documented playback limit is 1920 × 1080, and playback quality depends on internet speed. That limit concerns Drive playback, not YouTube’s ingest resolution or the resolution of files played locally by your encoder.

Configure YouTube Live and the encoder

  1. Create or configure the live setup in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, configure the stream and the broadcast event. YouTube’s API documentation treats stream settings and individual broadcast events as separate resources; a recurring broadcast can reuse a stream configuration.
  2. Choose an ingestion protocol your encoder supports. YouTube Help lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. Select a protocol supported by both the encoder and the YouTube setup you are using; the exact playlist workflow depends on the encoder and is not established simply by Drive’s documentation.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Add the YouTube stream key to the encoder’s streaming settings, and do not publish or share it. Anyone with access to the key may be able to send a feed to that stream.
  4. Set up playback of the local files. Configure the encoder or its media-playback source to play the files in the intended order and repeat the playlist. Test a full pass or enough of the sequence to verify transitions, audio, and loop behavior before going live.
  5. Use YouTube’s preview and status checks. Start the encoder output, then confirm the incoming preview and stream status in Live Control Room before starting or relying on the broadcast. YouTube’s Live Streaming API exposes stream status and health fields for systems that use the API.
  6. Monitor the unattended run. Check encoder playback, computer availability, network connectivity, and YouTube stream health. An always-on stream is not guaranteed uninterrupted by the fact that its source videos are in Drive.

When to use HLS

HLS is an option only when the encoder and use case call for it. YouTube’s HLS setup specifies HTTPS, MPEG-TS segments, segment durations of one to four seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP ingestion.

Those are protocol requirements, not settings for a Google Drive playlist. The encoder must produce a compliant feed; the Drive folder itself does not supply HLS segments. The lower-level YouTube HLS API guide also specifies muxed audio and video, supported codecs, and segment behavior. If you do not have a reason to use HLS, choose an ingestion option compatible with your encoder rather than assuming HLS is required.

Plan for a long-running broadcast and its replay

Google’s Live Production Guide says streams under 12 hours will be archived. It does not establish that every longer continuous broadcast will produce a complete replay. If a full archive matters, retain the original videos and check the current archive behavior and channel eligibility in YouTube Studio before relying on a 24-hour event as your only copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For recurring runs, distinguish the reusable stream configuration from each broadcast event, and confirm the current YouTube workflow when scheduling or restarting events. Do not assume that one 24-hour broadcast can be replayed or archived as a complete recording.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Having a video stored in your Drive does not establish that you have the rights to stream it. Before building a 24/7 playlist, confirm that you have permission for the video, music, artwork, and any other protected material it contains. Also review the current YouTube rules that apply to live streaming and monetization; reused or repetitive programming can raise policy questions that are separate from whether the encoder works technically.

Keep your own copies of source files and any permissions or licenses. A technically healthy stream can still receive a copyright claim or be restricted under YouTube policy.

Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube receives no video. Check that the encoder is sending to the correct YouTube stream, the stream key is current, the selected protocol matches the encoder configuration, and Live Control Room shows the expected incoming preview.
  • A file will not play or the playlist stops. Test that file directly on the encoder computer, verify it has finished downloading or syncing, and confirm the playlist order and repeat behavior in the encoder before returning the system to unattended use.
  • Playback works in Drive but not in the encoder. Browser playback does not mean a Drive share link can serve as a continuous encoder input. Make the actual video file accessible to the encoder and test it locally.
  • The stream has more latency than expected. If using HLS, YouTube documents higher latency than continuous RTMP ingestion. Check whether HLS is necessary for your encoder and use case.
  • The broadcast stops while the playlist is still available. Drive is not the stream host. Check computer power and sleep settings, encoder playback and output, internet connectivity, and YouTube stream health; storage availability alone cannot keep the live feed running.
  • A long stream has no complete replay. Google’s guide supports archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a universal guarantee for longer sessions. Keep the source files and verify current YouTube archive behavior rather than depending on a single extended broadcast recording.
