To run prerecorded video continuously on YouTube from Ubuntu, install OBS Studio, add a looping Media Source (or a VLC Video playlist), connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key, then start and monitor the encoder. One important limit: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise that a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will be archived. OBS looping repeats media, but does not rotate YouTube broadcasts or recover them unattended.
Before you start: plan the computer and the broadcast
This method uses OBS Studio on an Ubuntu computer that remains powered on, connected to the internet, and able to encode and send video for the duration of the broadcast. OBS requires a compatible graphics environment: OpenGL 3.3 support and X window system or Wayland. The OBS Project cautions that meeting these requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream or record well. Test your actual video, audio, and upload connection before relying on a long-running broadcast.
- An Ubuntu system with OBS Studio installed and a stable wired or wireless internet connection.
- The prerecorded video files stored locally, or VLC installed if you plan to use an OBS VLC Video playlist.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. First-time live streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder guide, so set it up in advance.
- A decision about whether uninterrupted viewing, archived recordings, or both are essential. YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance has a 12-hour boundary.

In particular, the OBS Project announced on June 19, 2026 that OBS Studio 33 no longer supports Ubuntu 24.04. Set up the prerecorded video loop in OBS
Loop one video with Media Source
- Open OBS and choose the scene that will carry the stream. If you have not created one, add a scene in the Scenes panel.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source, then select the local video file. OBS documents common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM.
- Enable Loop in the Media Source properties, then confirm the source.
- Check the preview: the video should be visible and should begin again when it reaches the end. Confirm that the expected audio is present and set to an appropriate level.
A Media Source’s Loop option repeats that file. It does not create new YouTube broadcasts, split the stream into archived segments, or restart OBS or YouTube after a failure.
Loop several videos with VLC Video
- Install VLC before adding the source. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, use the Sources panel’s + menu and choose VLC Video.
- Add the video files to the source playlist and set the order or shuffle behavior you want.
- Enable Loop Playlist (on by default) and confirm the source.
- Watch the OBS preview through a transition between files. Check that the next item appears as intended and that audio is present.
The VLC playlist is useful when you want several prerecorded videos to repeat as a sequence. Its playlist settings control media playback, not YouTube broadcast rotation.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key as a private credential: anyone with it may be able to connect an encoder to your channel’s stream.
- In OBS, open the stream settings and enter the YouTube server URL and stream key, or use an available YouTube service integration. Confirm the settings.
- Start the stream from OBS. YouTube says that starting the encoder sends content and creates the watch page. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live there as directed by YouTube.
- Keep OBS and Live Control Room open long enough to confirm that the stream is receiving video and audio and that stream health is acceptable.
Do not share screenshots or logs containing your stream key. If you think it has been exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings before reconnecting OBS.

For the standard OBS-to-YouTube workflow, YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Select resolution and bitrate for the output you want and an upload connection that can sustain it; there is no single bitrate that is right for every resolution and connection.

- Protocol: RTMP/RTMPS is the standard encoder route described here. YouTube says RTMPS encrypts the connection to Google’s servers.
- Video codec: H.264.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds.
- Resolution and bitrate: choose for your intended output and stable upload capacity. Test the actual video rather than assuming a connection’s advertised speed is fully available to the encoder.
- Audio and motion: test representative sound and scenes with movement, then check YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, including support for OBS. HLS requires TS segments, a 1–4 second segment duration, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. It is an alternative for a compatible workflow, not the simplest starting point for a basic OBS loop.
Understand the 12-hour archive limit before attempting 24/7
YouTube’s encoder guidance says all streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not make the same promise for one uninterrupted stream lasting 12 hours or longer. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours.

That leaves a practical choice: prioritize one continuous broadcast, or end and start separate broadcasts so each is under 12 hours if automatic archives matter. Ending and restarting broadcasts interrupts the live viewing session. The OBS looping documentation only covers repeating media; it does not establish a reliable, unattended recipe for automatically rotating YouTube broadcasts and archives. Verify the resulting behavior in Live Control Room for your channel rather than assuming the media loop handles it.

Monitor both OBS and Live Control Room when starting and during operation. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and video motion, checking upload capacity, and watching stream health. A local OBS preview confirms what OBS is composing; it does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Cost and reliability trade-offs
OBS Studio is the do-it-yourself software in this workflow, but a 24/7 local broadcast also depends on a computer, power, cooling, internet access, storage, and ongoing monitoring. The actual cost depends on hardware and connection needs; no specific computer or hardware model is established as suitable for every resolution and uptime target.
