To keep prerecorded media streaming to YouTube from an Ubuntu Azure VM, install FFmpeg, get the stream-specific RTMPS URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, test a finite stream, then run FFmpeg under systemd and monitor both its logs and YouTube’s stream health. This setup can restart FFmpeg after a process failure, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted service through every VM, network, input-file, or YouTube ingest problem.
What this setup does—and what it does not guarantee
An Azure VM supplies the cloud computer; FFmpeg reads media stored on that VM and pushes it to YouTube Live. You do not need to expose an inbound streaming port just to send a stream outward. You do need outbound connectivity to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
Continuous operation has two separate signals to watch: whether FFmpeg is running and making progress, and whether YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. A live process does not prove that viewers are receiving video. No particular Azure size, region, price, encoding preset, or uptime level is established as universally correct; choose these for your source media and target output, and check current Azure pricing for your region and configuration.

Choose a VM size based on the output resolution and frame rate, the codecs you plan to use, and whether FFmpeg will encode on the CPU. There is no single recommended SKU or verified cost for all workloads here. Review the current Azure portal pricing and configuration before provisioning.
-
Provide storage for the source files and leave enough capacity for the operating system, logs, and any playlist media. Confirm the VM can make outbound connections to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. A public inbound port is not required simply to push video to YouTube.
-
Connect to the VM using your chosen administrative method. Keep administration restricted to the access you need; do not expose unrelated services as part of a streaming setup.
2. Install FFmpeg and check its capabilities
Install FFmpeg from a trusted package source appropriate for your Ubuntu release, then inspect the installed version and build configuration. Packages can differ in enabled protocols and codecs; in particular, an rtmps:// URL alone does not prove the installed FFmpeg can connect using RTMPS. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes real-time file-to-server streaming and notes that RTMPS support can depend on build configuration: FFmpeg protocols documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore relying on a codec or option, check the local build’s help and encoder list—for example, ffmpeg -version, ffmpeg -protocols, and ffmpeg -encoders. Confirm that the protocols and encoders you intend to use are available. The exact commands and output can vary with the package build.
3. Prepare and validate your media
-
Use only files you have permission to stream. YouTube’s copyright rules and any rights attached to the audio or video still apply to a continuous broadcast.
-
Place the media on the VM and check that FFmpeg can read it and that it contains the expected audio and video streams. Use
ffprobe /path/to/video.mp4to inspect streams when ffprobe is included with your installation. -
Choose whether to pass through compatible source streams or re-encode them. If you re-encode, select resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and keyframe behavior for your source and the current YouTube encoder guidance. There is no verified universal preset or bitrate for this deployment.

4. Get the stream’s RTMPS destination from YouTube
-
Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live stream as appropriate for your channel.
-
Open the stream’s settings and reveal its current RTMPS server URL and stream key. Use the values issued for that stream, not an endpoint or key copied from an old command. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP and directs creators to the URL shown in Live Control Room: YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
-
Some encoders accept a server URL and stream key in separate fields; others expect them combined. Follow the format expected by your FFmpeg command and the current YouTube stream settings. Never paste an actual key into a public example, source repository, screenshot, world-readable file, or log.

YouTube’s API distinguishes RTMPS ingestion addresses and stream names from ordinary ingestion fields, and documents stream status and health information: YouTube LiveStreams API.
5. Test a short stream before looping it
First run FFmpeg in a foreground session against a short test or a controlled finite stream. Substitute the current stream destination securely; the placeholder below is not a real URL or key:
ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/test-video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$INGEST_URL"
This illustrates the shape of a file-to-server command, not a tested one-size-fits-all encoding recipe. FFmpeg documents the real-time input option and FLV output pattern for RTMP-style streaming. Confirm the installed build supports the chosen codecs and protocol, and adapt the encoding options to the source and YouTube’s current guidance.

While it runs, inspect FFmpeg’s output for input errors, encoder errors, and progress. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check whether the stream arrives and review its health and any configuration issues. YouTube documents health values such as good, ok, bad, and noData, along with configuration issue information in its API. End the test and resolve any warnings before attempting a continuous broadcast.
6. Loop a file with FFmpeg
For one file, an illustrative loop command is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$INGEST_URL"
-re reads the file at its natural rate rather than sending it as fast as possible; -stream_loop -1 requests an indefinite input loop. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg version supports the option and that the input can be read repeatedly. The command uses video and audio re-encoding as an example; it is not a guarantee that these settings suit your file, VM, or target stream.
Provide the destination securely. Avoid placing a real stream key directly in shell history or a broadly readable service file. A protected environment file readable only by the dedicated service account is one possible approach; restrict its ownership and permissions, and ensure diagnostic logging does not reveal credentials. If YouTube rotates or you replace the stream key, update the protected configuration and restart the service.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →7. Run FFmpeg under systemd
Create a dedicated account and protect the media
Run the stream as a dedicated, unprivileged Linux account rather than as root. Give that account read access to the media and access only to the protected configuration needed for the stream. Keep the key out of the unit’s publicly readable text and avoid logging a command line that exposes it.
Configure a service
Create a systemd unit that invokes your tested FFmpeg command, runs as the dedicated account, and restarts after a process exit. The following is a template: replace paths, account names, and the command with values validated on your VM. It assumes the command obtains the destination from a protected environment file.

Protect the environment file so only root and the service account can read it, and validate that the way your unit expands the destination works with your systemd and FFmpeg configuration. If the URL or key contains characters that require shell interpretation, use a carefully controlled wrapper or another secure configuration method; do not solve quoting problems by exposing the credential.

Check Live Control Room as well. A systemd service in an active state does not establish that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Restart=on-failure can bring FFmpeg back after an abnormal process exit. It cannot fix an unreadable input, incorrect key, unavailable network, VM outage, or remote ingest stall by itself. Test the failure modes you can safely simulate and decide how you will detect and respond to a stream that appears connected locally but is unhealthy at YouTube.
RTMP, RTMPS, and operational resilience
-
RTMPS: YouTube describes this as RTMP over TLS/SSL, providing encryption. Use the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room when available. If an SSL error persists, YouTube’s help guidance says to check the protocol and server and try port 443.
-
FFmpeg support: FFmpeg lists RTMPS among RTMP protocol variants, but support can depend on how it was built, including its librtmp configuration. Verify the installed package and test the exact endpoint rather than assuming protocol support from the URL scheme.

Restart versus recovery: systemd can restart a process that exits. It does not diagnose or guarantee recovery from every input, network, host, or YouTube-side failure. Use FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s stream health together.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports an unsupported protocol or fails immediately on an RTMPS URL | The installed build may not support RTMPS or its required TLS integration. | Inspect ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -protocols; install a trusted build with the needed support, then test the exact current YouTube endpoint. |
| SSL or connection error | Wrong protocol/server, endpoint configuration, or a connection issue. | Re-copy the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, verify the destination format expected by FFmpeg, and follow YouTube’s guidance to try port 443 if an SSL error persists. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream, or reports a bad/no-data health state | The destination or key may be wrong, FFmpeg may not be transmitting, or encoding/input configuration may be invalid. | Compare the configured destination with the stream’s current Live Control Room settings; inspect FFmpeg and journal logs; review YouTube’s health and configuration issues. |
| FFmpeg exits or the unit repeatedly restarts | Unreadable or damaged media, unsupported options/codecs, permissions, or an invalid destination can stop the process. | Run the same tested command in a foreground session as the service account; verify file access, build capabilities, and protected configuration before restarting the unit. |
| The service is active but the broadcast is stalled or unhealthy | A running process alone does not confirm YouTube ingest health; upstream connectivity or remote ingest may have stalled. | Inspect FFmpeg progress and logs alongside YouTube’s Live Control Room health. Restarting the process may help some failures but is not a universal fix. |
| The key may have been exposed | A credential was included in a public file, repository, screenshot, or log. | Rotate the key in YouTube Live Control Room, update the protected configuration, and restart the service. Remove exposed copies where possible. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining an Ubuntu VM, FFmpeg command, key storage, service unit, and monitoring is more operational work than you want, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
