Yes—you can run a continuous YouTube stream from a spare desktop if it stays powered on and your BSNL connection can sustain the stream’s upload bitrate. Since your BSNL plan, location and actual upload speed are unknown, start with a conservative setting, test the connection from the desktop, and monitor YouTube’s stream health before relying on it.

What you need before going live

  • A desktop that can remain powered on and ventilated, with a streaming encoder such as OBS.
  • A stable internet connection. Use wired Ethernet if available.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and its stream key.
  • A video and audio source suitable for continuous playback, plus the necessary rights to stream it.

The computer and broadband are separate points of failure: a stable connection cannot keep the stream live if the desktop loses power, and a running desktop cannot compensate for an ISP outage.

Check whether your BSNL connection can sustain the stream

Confirm your current plan’s upload and usage terms

The title does not identify your BSNL plan, service area, connection type or upload performance. Confirm your plan’s sustained upload speed, any fair-use threshold and the speed after that threshold with BSNL for your connection. Do not infer upload capacity from an advertised download speed.

Test from the desktop’s actual location

  1. Connect the desktop as you intend to stream, preferably by Ethernet.
  2. Measure upload performance at that location at different times if your connection varies. Treat a speed-test result as a snapshot, not proof that the same rate will hold continuously.
  3. Run the encoder with representative movement and audio, then observe dropped frames and YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the broadcast: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  4. Begin below the connection’s measured sustained upload capacity, leaving room for variation and other household uploads. Increase only after a realistic test remains stable; YouTube does not prescribe a universal headroom multiplier.

Set up the YouTube encoder

Use a practical starting configuration

For a straightforward desktop setup, use H.264 video, CBR rate control, RTMPS ingest, and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR and two-second keyframes, and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube also supports H.265 and AV1 in addition to H.264; the settings here are a simple starting point, not a claim that these are the only supported options. YouTube transcodes incoming live video for different viewer formats.

In your encoder, select the YouTube service, choose the RTMPS server option if available, and enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. Labels and menu paths can differ by encoder version, so consult the current documentation for your encoder rather than relying on a fixed menu path.

Choose resolution and bitrate together

YouTube Help’s H.264 guidance lists these bitrate values. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your BSNL connection can sustain them:

Output YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance
1080p30 5 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps listed as the upper value

720p30 8 Mbps recommended; 3 Mbps minimum
480p30 4 Mbps recommended; 0.4 Mbps minimum
360p30 4 Mbps recommended; 0.4 Mbps minimum

These figures are from YouTube Help, accessed in 2026. The table’s minimum and recommended values are platform guidance; actual stability depends on the sustained upload available to your desktop. Start lower if needed, test with representative content, and check both encoder statistics and YouTube stream health.

Keep the stream key private

Your stream key lets an encoder send a broadcast to your channel. Copy it from YouTube Studio into the encoder’s stream settings and do not publish or share it. If you think it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder before streaming again.

Start the stream and verify it is healthy

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup and select or create the broadcast you intend to use.
  2. Copy the stream key and configure the encoder’s YouTube/RTMPS connection.
  3. Start the encoder and wait for YouTube Studio to receive the signal. Check the preview and stream-health status before making the broadcast public or relying on it.
  4. Keep monitoring encoder statistics and YouTube’s stream health after the broadcast begins. If dropped frames or warnings appear, reduce resolution or bitrate and test again.

YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” For a 24/7 broadcast, test with the same kind of audio and movement expected in the real stream, not only a static desktop image.

Keep the spare desktop running continuously

  • Disable sleep and hibernation for the streaming session, and check that the display turning off does not put the computer to sleep.
  • Keep vents unobstructed and monitor temperatures during a test run. The desktop’s hardware, cooling and reliability are specific to your machine.
  • Schedule operating-system updates and restarts so they do not interrupt the broadcast; do not permanently disable security updates.
  • Use a UPS if you need protection from brief local power interruptions. Size it based on the actual equipment wattage and the runtime you need.
  • Check the encoder’s current documentation for its reconnect or recovery behavior, and verify it in a test before depending on it.

BSNL’s published terms identify technical, network, power or maintenance issues as possible sources of interruption and do not warrant uninterrupted service or speed. A UPS can help keep the desktop and local network equipment running through a brief power cut; it cannot fix an ISP outage. See BSNL’s terms and conditions.

Account for continuous data use

At a constant bitrate, video payload is bitrate multiplied by elapsed time. Actual network traffic is higher because audio and transport overhead also use data. Your actual monthly usage depends on the selected bitrate, audio settings, hours streamed, and any BSNL fair-use terms. Confirm those terms for your plan instead of treating a bitrate-based payload estimate as a BSNL usage figure.

Troubleshoot common interruptions

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
Dropped frames or unstable stream health Upload variation, competing household uploads, or a bitrate that is too high for the connection Reduce bitrate or resolution, limit competing uploads, and repeat a representative test from the desktop.
YouTube does not receive the encoder signal Stream key, selected server, or encoder connection settings Recheck the key in YouTube Studio, choose the intended YouTube RTMPS connection, and restart the encoder.
Stream stops when nobody is at the computer Sleep settings, restart/update behavior, local power, or encoder failure Check sleep and restart settings, arrange updates outside the broadcast, and test the encoder’s documented recovery behavior.
Desktop stays on but the stream disconnects Broadband or network interruption Check the connection and YouTube stream health. A UPS does not address an ISP outage; confirm service conditions with BSNL.
