You can run a 24/7 YouTube stream from a rented server in Mumbai by running an encoder on that server and sending its output to the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it, configure an output the server and network can sustain, then test and monitor the stream before relying on it continuously. A Mumbai server’s location alone does not establish that it has enough encoding capacity or outbound bandwidth.

What you need before you start

The rented server hosts the encoder process; YouTube receives the video over an ingest connection. Before choosing a server or configuring the encoder, establish the workload you intend to run and check that the hosting plan can support it.

  • A server in Mumbai with sufficient compute capacity for your chosen encoding settings.
  • A reliable outbound network connection that can sustain the stream bitrate, with headroom for variation.
  • An encoder that supports YouTube’s ingest protocol and the codec and settings you plan to use.
  • A YouTube live stream and its ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
  • A way to check the encoder process, network connection and stream health during operation.

YouTube’s guidance does not give a universal CPU or RAM requirement for encoding on a rented server. Nor does the available evidence establish a particular Mumbai provider or plan. Evaluate the server against your own resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate rather than relying on a generic size recommendation.

Choose a Mumbai server that can sustain the stream

Compare providers using the actual details of the plan, not just the advertised location. Check whether the server is physically in Mumbai, what outbound transfer or egress limits apply, and whether the connection can sustain your selected bitrate over time. Also consider CPU performance under your intended encoding workload, restart and recovery options, provider support and any service commitments.

YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate. The National Informatics Centre’s webcast service guidance mentions 2–4 Mbps per stream for its own webcast context; that figure is not a universal YouTube requirement and should not replace testing the actual path to YouTube. See the NIC webcast services guidance.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream.
  2. Open the stream’s settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance describes the current sequence for revealing and copying the RTMPS URL.
  3. Enter the URL and key in your server-side encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not expose it in public logs, scripts, screenshots or shared configuration.
  4. If the key is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings before continuing to use it.

Configure the encoder and ingest connection

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Use the RTMPS endpoint supplied for your stream rather than guessing or substituting a hostname. Google’s developer documentation specifies that the RTMPS URL uses the rtmps protocol and connects on port 443. RTMPS encrypts the connection in transit; it does not make a public stream private. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion documentation.

YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS and DASH ingestion, but an encoder must support the protocol you select. For the ordinary encoder-to-YouTube workflow, RTMPS is the practical choice when supported: YouTube recommends it for security, and its API guidance describes it as a good choice for ordinary content, especially where low latency matters. The documentation does not establish a universal ranking of the protocols for every workflow. See the ingestion protocol comparison.

Use YouTube’s encoder guidance as the starting point

  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; prefer RTMPS when supported.
  • Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 are listed by YouTube. Confirm that the encoder and your workflow support your selected codec.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps.
  • Bitrate mode: use constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3. For RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 surround sound is supported only with AAC.

For H.264, YouTube’s recommended examples include 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for the stated resolution and frame rate, not a promise that a particular server or network can sustain them. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance for the full table and the codec and frame-rate combination you intend to use. YouTube’s surfaced guidance has differed between localized versions of the page, so use the current table shown in the documentation rather than combining figures from different versions; automatic resolution and frame-rate detection may also be appropriate.

Test the stream before leaving it live

  1. Start the encoder with representative video, movement and audio—not just a static image or silent test pattern.
  2. Open the stream in Live Control Room and check that YouTube is receiving it and reports healthy stream status.
  3. Watch for dropped frames, buffering, audio problems or warnings, and adjust the bitrate or encoding workload if the server or network cannot sustain the chosen settings.
  4. Confirm that the process remains running and that the stream continues after a realistic period of operation.
  5. Arrange ongoing checks for encoder status, network reachability and YouTube stream health. Decide how the encoder will be restarted and how you will respond if YouTube or the server connection drops.

YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during an event. A rented server does not, by itself, guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast: process supervision, recovery behavior and monitoring arrangements depend on your implementation and hosting service.

Keep the stream compliant and sustainable

Before leaving a broadcast running, make sure you have the rights to use the video and audio being streamed. A stream key and a technically healthy connection do not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules, and avoid assuming that a loop is permitted merely because the underlying file can be uploaded.

Also check that your stream’s content and presentation comply with YouTube’s rules for monetization and reused content if you plan to earn revenue. A continuously repeated video is not, by itself, evidence that a channel qualifies for monetization. Eligibility and enforcement depend on YouTube’s current policies and review of the channel’s content.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
YouTube does not receive the encoder output Incorrect stream URL or key, incompatible protocol, or blocked network connection. Copy the URL and key again from Live Control Room; confirm the encoder’s protocol selection; for RTMPS, use the supplied endpoint and ensure outbound port 443 is reachable.
Connection fails when using RTMPS The encoder may not support RTMPS, or the configured URL or network path may be wrong. Use an encoder that supports RTMPS, copy YouTube’s supplied RTMPS URL, and check outbound connectivity to port 443. Do not substitute an assumed endpoint.
Stream health reports instability or frames drop Configured bitrate may exceed sustained outbound capacity, or the server may not keep up with encoding. Test the actual path and server under representative load, leave network headroom, and lower the output bitrate or encoding workload if needed.
Video or audio is missing or plays incorrectly Codec, audio format or encoder configuration may not match the intended output. Check the encoder’s output settings against YouTube’s current codec guidance; verify audio is AAC or MP3 and that the source contains the audio you expect.
The stream stops after running for a while The encoder process, server or network connection may have failed, or YouTube may have dropped the ingest connection. Check process status, server and network logs, then Live Control Room messages. Set up a recovery procedure and verify that it can restore the stream; do not assume automatic recovery is provided by the host.
Stream key appears in a public log or screenshot The credential has been exposed. Reset or replace the key in YouTube’s stream settings, update the encoder configuration and remove public copies where possible.
