You can loop a compatible video file to YouTube Live from an always-on Linux server without re-encoding it: use FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 and -c copy, and send the output to the RTMPS endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. This saves the server from decoding and encoding the media, but it works only when the source streams can be muxed into the output format. YouTube still transcodes the incoming stream for viewers.

What “without transcoding” means

FFmpeg stream copy passes compressed audio and video packets through without decoding and re-encoding them. In FFmpeg, -c copy selects that behavior. It is not a way to change the media: you cannot resize, filter, add overlays, or alter the audio or video with stream copy. The source must already be compatible with the output container and YouTube ingest. See the FFmpeg stream-copy documentation.

This describes the Linux relay, not the entire delivery chain. YouTube says it automatically transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Review the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming help.
  2. Create or select an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the server URL and the associated stream key exactly as displayed. The key is a credential: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, and logs, and reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  3. Use the supplied RTMPS endpoint where possible. RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL, encrypting the connection between your encoder and YouTube ingest. Use the exact URL and port Live Control Room provides, and confirm your FFmpeg build supports the required TLS connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS; its RTMPS encryption guide notes that specifying port 443 may be necessary in some SSL-error cases.

Check the file before you loop it

Do not assume that a file will work just because it plays locally. Inspect the video and audio streams, their codecs, and the container before deployment. You need a video stream and, for this example, an audio stream that FFmpeg can copy into the FLV output used for the YouTube ingest connection. Stream copy cannot convert an incompatible codec or container; if the source cannot be muxed into the chosen output, find a compatible source/output combination or relax the no-transcoding requirement.

The command below maps the first video and first audio stream. If the file lacks audio, that mapping will fail; do not simply remove the audio mapping without first confirming that the resulting stream is acceptable for your use. The cited guidance does not establish that every codec/container combination is accepted by every FFmpeg build or YouTube endpoint.

Run the looping FFmpeg command

On the Linux host, set environment variables to the exact RTMPS base URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room. Keep the key private; avoid putting it directly in a shared shell history or in a world-readable script.

export YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL='paste-the-exact-RTMPS-base-URL-here'
export STREAM_KEY='paste-the-stream-key-here'

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i loop.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c copy -f flv
  "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
  • -re reads the file at its native playback rate rather than sending it as fast as the server can process it.
  • -stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to loop the input indefinitely. As an input option, it appears before the relevant -i. FFmpeg documents the option in its documentation source.
  • -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 selects the first video and audio streams from the input.
  • -c copy copies the selected streams without re-encoding; -f flv selects the output muxer used for the ingest connection.
  • The final URL joins the RTMPS base URL and stream key. Follow the exact endpoint form shown in Live Control Room; the example is not guaranteed to suit every endpoint, source file, or FFmpeg build.

This is a documented-option example, not a universal tested command. Start with a private or unlisted stream and verify the complete path before making the stream public.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its recommended keyframe frequency is 2 seconds and should not exceed 4 seconds. These are YouTube’s current guidance figures accessed in 2026; the bitrate recommendation depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps. Check the live settings page for the exact profile relevant to your stream: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

With -c copy, FFmpeg does not set a new bitrate, frame rate, resolution, or keyframe interval. Those properties come from the input file. If they do not meet the intended ingest profile, stream copy cannot fix them; use a compatible file or choose to transcode instead.

Test in Live Control Room before publishing

  1. Start FFmpeg and wait for the encoder signal and preview to appear in Live Control Room.
  2. Check the preview for moving video and audible sound. Confirm that the stream health indication is acceptable before going public.
  3. Keep the test representative of the real source and operating conditions. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health during operation in its encoder setup guidance.

Before streaming publicly, confirm that you have the rights to the video and audio and that the content complies with YouTube’s policies. A file looping continuously does not exempt it from copyright or other platform rules. The cited encoder documentation covers setup and stream health, not a guarantee that particular content is permitted.

Keep the Linux process running—and plan for failures

For unattended operation, run FFmpeg in the foreground under a Linux service manager so the process can start with the host and be restarted after it exits. Configure the manager using the FFmpeg command and credentials appropriate to your system, restrict access to any file containing the stream key, and check service logs. Monitor for prolonged loss of ingest rather than assuming a running process means YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

A restart policy only restarts a process; it cannot repair an incompatible input, invalid or revoked key, network outage, account restriction, or YouTube ingest problem. The cited YouTube and FFmpeg documentation does not prescribe a guaranteed systemd unit or universal reconnection recipe, so test the policy on your distribution and alert on sustained stream loss.

Understand the 12-hour archive detail

YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That condition is not a promise that one encoder session can run indefinitely, nor that a longer event will be archived. A continuous 24/7 channel therefore needs an explicit plan for monitoring, reconnection, and the current Live Control Room session behavior. Verify the current account guidance before relying on unattended operation. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Decide whether your goal is a persistent live watch page, a series of periodic live sessions, or preserved video-on-demand recordings. These are distinct outcomes; do not treat continuous availability as equivalent to a guaranteed archive.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
FFmpeg exits with a stream mapping or muxing error The selected audio/video stream is missing or cannot be copied into the chosen output. Confirm the file contains the mapped streams and that their codecs/container work with FLV output. Stream copy cannot convert them; choose a compatible source or allow transcoding.
YouTube does not show an incoming stream The endpoint or key may be wrong, or the connection may not be reaching ingest. Copy the exact server URL and key again from Live Control Room, confirm the URL form and port, and check FFmpeg output and network connectivity.
An SSL or TLS connection error appears The URL may not use the supplied RTMPS endpoint, the port may be incorrect, or the installed FFmpeg build may lack the necessary TLS support. Use the exact RTMPS URL and port from Live Control Room, verify TLS support, and consult YouTube’s note about port 443 for some SSL-error cases: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
Video appears but audio is missing The source may have no audio stream, or the first audio stream may not be the one you intended to send. Inspect the input streams and adjust mapping only after confirming the correct stream. This example assumes a compatible first audio stream.
The stream stops after FFmpeg exits or the host disconnects A foreground process has no restart or recovery supervisor, or an underlying network, host, credential, or ingest problem persists. Use a service manager to restart unexpected process exits, inspect logs, and alert on prolonged ingest loss. Resolve the underlying cause; restarting alone cannot fix it.
The live page is available but no archive appears The event may exceed the documented under-12-hour automatic archive condition, or session behavior may differ. Do not rely on auto-archive for longer operation; check current Live Control Room and account guidance and plan recording/session behavior separately.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the channel live without maintaining a Linux host and FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so no computer or home connection has to stay on.

  • There is no home machine to keep powered on, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • One flat price per slot covers any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded; StreamNeo does not re-encode the video or divide quality into tiers.
  • The first day is free with no card, once per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.

Every slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and support from the StreamNeo team. The same features apply across plan lengths; only the billing duration changes. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.
