To keep recorded Orthodox Christian services playing on YouTube around the clock, send a continuous playback feed through an encoder to a YouTube live broadcast. YouTube does not provide a setting that automatically loops a playlist of recordings indefinitely; your playback and encoding setup must keep sending the feed. Before going live, confirm the channel is eligible, secure rights for every recording and its incorporated material, plan for attendee consent, test the stream, and decide how you will preserve recordings longer than 12 hours.
What you need for a continuous stream
The workflow has three parts: recordings prepared for continuous playback, a playback system and encoder that send video to YouTube, and a YouTube broadcast that viewers can watch. The encoder feed and the viewer-facing broadcast are related but distinct YouTube resources: the incoming stream supplies the broadcast. YouTube’s documentation describes ingesting and monitoring that feed; it does not specify one required local computer, cloud provider, or automatic 24/7 playlist feature. - A YouTube channel verified for live streaming, with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Check the channel’s actual status in YouTube Studio before scheduling. YouTube live-streaming eligibility
- Recordings the parish is authorized to stream, including the rights needed for their music and any other incorporated material.
- A playback and encoding setup capable of continuously sending the feed, plus a responsible person or service to respond if it stops.
- A plan for parishioner notice, consent, camera framing, and any separate archive the parish wants to keep.
Prepare recordings, rights, and consent
Check what each recording contains and where it may be streamed
Make a playlist only from recordings the parish has permission to rebroadcast. Track who owns or controls each recording and the rights for music, chant, images, readings, and other incorporated material. A parish’s possession of a recording—or a general music license—does not by itself establish permission for continuous public rebroadcast, every territory, monetization if applicable, or continued availability as an archive. Ask the relevant rights holders about this specific use and its geographic scope.

YouTube places responsibility for necessary rights on the content provider, including music rights. Its live streams are scanned for third-party matches and can be interrupted or terminated after a match. Even licensed material may be interrupted unless the rights holder adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist; archived streams can also receive Content ID claims after the live broadcast. Tell people when worship is being filmed
Follow applicable law and your diocese’s policy. Orthodox Church in America guidance says parish representatives should inform parishioners when videotaping occurs, post signs when worship is distributed online or through broadcast media, and obtain signed media releases from adults and from guardians of minors who may participate in filmed activities. Consider camera framing and clearly communicated ways for people to avoid appearing in the stream. Keep sensitive pastoral situations out of view. Set up the YouTube broadcast and encoder
- Choose a playback system. Prepare the recordings in the sequence you want viewers to hear and see. Configure the playback system to repeat that sequence continuously and feed its output to an encoder. The playback and encoding process must remain active for the broadcast to continue.
- Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a broadcast or select the one you intend to use. Copy the stream key and the ingestion details shown for that stream into the encoder. Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
- Configure the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary parish programming. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency, which should not exceed four seconds. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your stable upload connection can sustain. The recommended bitrate varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate; use YouTube’s current settings guidance for the format you select. - Start sending the feed and inspect the preview. Start the encoder’s output, then confirm that the incoming preview shows the intended video and that audio is present and intelligible. Test representative movement and sound—not just a still frame or a silent opening.
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Start the YouTube broadcast when the preview and stream-health indicators are satisfactory. Assign someone to respond to an encoder stop, internet outage, copyright warning, or silent or broken source. YouTube recommends testing before launch and monitoring stream health. Schedule the stream and plan its archive
Schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio and share its stable link with parishioners. Decide whether live chat is suitable for the service and, if enabled, assign moderation. A Google/YouTube production guide says streams up to 12 hours are automatically archived as video-on-demand and advises teams to record longer streams separately for manual upload. Do not rely on one complete YouTube archive for a 24-hour broadcast based on that guide: check the current Live Control Room behavior for your account, and make a separate recording if a complete archive matters. - You cannot start a live broadcast: Check YouTube Studio for channel verification and live-streaming eligibility. A live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days can prevent access.
- The broadcast has no incoming picture or remains in preview: Confirm the encoder is sending to the ingestion details for the selected broadcast and that it has started output. Check the stream key, input source, and encoder connection status.
- Video or audio stutters: Check whether the upload connection is stable and can sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Lower the encoder load or stream settings to a level the connection can maintain, then test again.
- The stream stops or shows a copyright warning: Review the warning and identify the matched material. Confirm the parish has the required rights for this specific live use; where appropriate, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting. A license alone does not guarantee that YouTube’s detection will not interrupt the stream.
- The recording plays but no sound reaches viewers: Check the playback output and encoder audio input, then verify audio in the YouTube preview before restarting the public broadcast.
- The live broadcast is present but the full day is missing from the archive: The production guide describes automatic archiving for streams up to 12 hours, not a complete archive for a longer continuous stream. Use a separate recording or shorter broadcasts if preserving the full program is important.

Orthodox Church in America guidance describes the aim of streaming as drawing the faithful into prayer and worship, rather than providing something merely to watch. That is a useful pastoral test for camera placement, the choice of services to stream, chat settings, and how the parish communicates the broadcast.
