You can run recorded church services as a continuous YouTube Live broadcast from an Amazon Lightsail VPS by preparing a YouTube encoder stream, installing an encoder such as FFmpeg on a Linux instance, and supervising a loop of your media files. YouTube must be enabled for live streaming, the instance must sustain the chosen encode and outbound bandwidth, and you must have rights to rebroadcast every part of each service. The settings and operating plan below are grounded in YouTube and AWS guidance; treat the sample commands as configurations to validate on your own instance, not as a tested 24/7 deployment.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned launch. YouTube live streaming tips and YouTube encoder setup.
- A Lightsail Linux instance with enough measured CPU, memory, disk space, and monthly outbound transfer for your source video and selected output settings.
- Recorded service files stored on the instance or otherwise accessible to its encoder, plus an encoder such as FFmpeg.
- A stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The key is a credential: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs. Reset it if exposed. Manage live stream settings.
- Confirmed broadcast rights for the service, especially music and other third-party material.
A VPS encoder sends an outbound feed to YouTube; viewers watch the YouTube stream rather than connecting to your Lightsail instance. For Linux administration, restrict inbound SSH (TCP 22) to your administrator IP range where practical. Choose the stream settings and estimate bandwidth
Match the output to the source recording. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and RTMPS for encrypted ingest. AAC or MP3 audio is supported. Use the row matching your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube encoder settings.

YouTube advises leaving 20% upload headroom and testing a realistic stream. For a 5 Mbps video stream plus audio, plan for more than 6 Mbps of stable outbound capacity; that figure is arithmetic applying the headroom guidance, not a separate YouTube benchmark. Estimate monthly transfer
For a constant bitrate, estimate data as total bitrate in bits per second × streaming seconds ÷ 8, then convert bytes to gigabytes. Video alone at 5 Mbps for 24 hours is about 54 GB per day using decimal gigabytes: 5,000,000 × 86,400 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000. Audio, protocol overhead, restarts, and other traffic add to the total. Compare your estimate with the allowance for your specific Lightsail region and plan before launch. AWS counts inbound and outbound data toward the allowance, but excess charges apply to outbound transfer; inbound excess is not charged, and the allowance resets monthly. Lightsail transfer terms.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming and wait for activation if this is your channel’s first stream.
- Open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the ingest URL and stream key from the stream settings. YouTube’s encoder workflow is to provide those details to your encoder and then start the encoder. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Use the RTMPS ingest URL where available, with the stream key kept in a protected configuration file or secret store accessible only to the encoder account.
- Confirm the selected stream’s resolution, frame rate, and latency settings in YouTube Studio. Labels can change; verify the current Live Control Room controls rather than relying on a saved screenshot or old guide.
Prepare the Lightsail VPS and media
- Create a Linux/Unix Lightsail instance in a region that suits your administration and transfer needs. Use a plan only as a starting point; AWS’s listed bundle resources do not establish that a particular instance can encode your video reliably.
- Connect over SSH using your key pair. In the Lightsail networking controls, restrict inbound SSH to your source IP if practical. Do not expose additional inbound services for a design that only needs to send an outbound stream.
- Install FFmpeg using the package manager for your distribution and confirm it can read the media format. Keep source files on persistent instance storage or another location the encoder can reach consistently.
- Make a playlist containing only the files intended for broadcast, in the desired order. Check duration, audio presence, aspect ratio, and playback before configuring a continuous loop.
- Store the stream URL and key with restrictive file permissions, and ensure shell history and service logs do not print the key.
A basic FFmpeg push conceptually reads a media file, loops it, encodes video and audio to YouTube-compatible settings, and sends the result to the RTMPS endpoint. Exact flags depend on the source codecs and chosen resolution, and a single command does not provide process supervision, monitoring, or guaranteed recovery. Do not deploy a command copied without validating its output on your files and current FFmpeg build.

Make the broadcast continuous and observable
For a 24/7 operation, arrange the encoder to select and loop the intended files, restart after a process failure, write useful logs without exposing credentials, and report when it stops. A Linux service manager such as systemd can supervise a process, but you must validate the unit, restart policy, and file access for your distribution. No particular FFmpeg command, service unit, retry interval, or failover configuration is established here as tested.

- Watch CPU, memory, disk availability, encoder restarts, outbound transfer, and YouTube stream health during the test and after launch.
- In Live Control Room, confirm that video and audio arrive correctly; check the channel and watch pages as well as encoder output.
- Keep a recovery procedure for replacing a bad file, rotating an exposed key, restarting the encoder, and checking the YouTube feed.
- If a stable public IP helps with administration or DNS, attach a Lightsail static IPv4. AWS says a default public IPv4 changes when the instance is stopped and started, while an attached static IP stays the same and is not charged while attached to an instance. Choose a Lightsail plan without guessing
Lightsail bundles compute, RAM, storage, and a monthly transfer allowance; plans are billed hourly up to a monthly price ceiling. AWS’s current documentation lists a Linux/Unix IPv4 Nano example at $5 USD per month with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB storage, and 1 TB transfer. This is a listed example, not a recommendation or proof that it can encode a particular church service. A local church computer avoids a VPS bill but depends on the building’s power, internet, and a computer kept running; it also needs local maintenance. A VPS moves the encoder offsite, but adds recurring hosting cost, cloud CPU limits, transfer accounting, and remote monitoring. Neither option removes the need to supervise the broadcast.
Copyright and replay considerations
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, and continuing to show matched material can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even licensed content may require the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; an archived stream can receive Content ID claims after it ends. YouTube’s livestream terms require the content provider to have the necessary worldwide rights, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 session will archive as expected. Troubleshooting common failures
