You can broadcast a recorded Mass as a YouTube live stream, but keeping it running around the clock takes more than looping a video: you need YouTube live-stream access, a playback and encoder setup you have tested, an operator who can respond to failures, and documented rights for every part of the recording. Before building a continuous schedule, also decide whether advance prerecorded Masses are appropriate for your parish and how you will tell viewers they are prerecorded.

Choose the kind of broadcast before building a 24/7 loop

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) describes televised Mass as a ministry for people unable to participate physically, not as a replacement for pastoral care to the sick or Sunday Mass in a parish community. Its Guidelines for Televising the Liturgy, updated in January 2014, prefer a live transmission when possible and call for particular care with advance recordings. Consult your diocese for current local direction.

Model What viewers receive Liturgical considerations Operational implications
Live stream A celebration as it occurs. The USCCB guidance identifies live transmission as ideal when possible. Requires a live operator and a working capture, internet, and encoder setup during the celebration.
Same-day delayed telecast A recording of a Mass celebrated earlier that day within a local community. The USCCB describes this as less ideal than live, but still connected to the local celebration. Requires recording and scheduling playback, as well as an operator to check the broadcast.
Advance prerecorded telecast A previously recorded liturgy broadcast later. The USCCB calls for care with the liturgical season, a gathered worshiping community, an unhurried celebration, and preserving the elements of Mass. It discourages editing out parts and says Sunday Mass should include a homily. Its guidance says only one liturgy should be recorded per day with the same group. Adds playback scheduling and makes it especially important to identify the recording as prerecorded and confirm that its timing and content are appropriate.

The USCCB states: “The televised Mass is never a substitute for the Church’s pastoral care for the sick in the form of visits by parish ministers who share the Scriptures and bring Communion, nor is it ever a substitute for the Sunday Mass celebrated within a parish faith community each week.”

Clear rights before you broadcast

YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions make the provider responsible for having the necessary rights to livestream the content, including music rights. Do not assume that permission to use material during an in-person service also covers online streaming, an archived replay, or a continuous broadcast.

Use a rights checklist for each recording

  • Recording: Confirm that the parish can broadcast the video and audio recording itself.
  • Music: Check both the musical composition and the sound recording, including music performed during the liturgy. Ask whether the license covers online streaming, the relevant territory, live transmission, replay or archiving, lyrics, and the intended audience.
  • Texts and overlays: Review readings, lyrics, graphics, and other text displayed in the video. The USCCB Committee on Divine Worship’s Copyright Permission Requirements for the Use of Liturgical Texts says, “No permission is required for the livestreaming of Masses and the Divine Office via social media.” That guidance concerns liturgical texts; it does not grant permission for musical settings or other compositions.
  • People shown or heard: Check that the parish has appropriate permission for people appearing in the footage where applicable.
  • Limits and records: Keep licenses, permissions, territory and use limits, and rights-holder contact details where the stream operator can find them.

A Diocese of Sacramento notice from April 2020 gives one practical example: it advises parishes to confirm whether existing music licenses cover online streaming and to check reporting requirements and coverage for streaming, archiving, lyrics, and audience size. It names OneLicense as an annual option for certain publishers. That notice is not universal or current licensing advice; confirm the terms directly with the relevant provider and your diocese for your repertoire and use.

Plan for YouTube’s copyright checks

YouTube Help’s Copyright issues with live streams says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate it. Even licensed material can trigger an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the parish channel through Content ID. Ask the rights holder or licensing service whether allowlisting is required and arrange it before going live; keep an escalation contact available to the operator.

Rights to stream and eligibility to earn advertising revenue are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization policy clarification dated July 15, 2025 says mass-produced or repetitive content can be ineligible under its “inauthentic content” policy, which also applies to live streams. Do not plan a budget on the assumption that looping recorded Masses will qualify for monetization.

What you need to start

Phone-based capture

For recording a Mass with a phone, the USCCB’s How to Livestream the Mass: Practical Tips recommends horizontal placement for YouTube, a tripod, a lapel or directional microphone, and reliable internet. Put the main light behind the camera where practical and avoid mixing interior and exterior light if you can. Check that the microphone connector works with the phone; an adapter may be needed. A smartphone tripod for livestreaming is a sensible basic accessory, but verify compatibility rather than assuming a particular model will work.

A phone is a capture device, not by itself a continuous 24/7 playback and recovery plan. If reliable internet is not available at the church, the USCCB guide suggests recording and posting later or using a premiere for real-time interaction.

Computer and encoder

YouTube offers webcam and encoder workflows. An encoder setup gives you a route for sending a playback source, but YouTube’s setup guidance does not establish a universal continuous-loop application, host, service-level agreement, or guaranteed recovery time. Use an encoder and playback arrangement your parish can operate and test; do not treat an event-streaming checklist as a promise of uninterrupted 24/7 service.

Set up and test the YouTube encoder workflow

  1. Verify channel access: Confirm the channel is verified and livestreaming is enabled. YouTube’s standard computer livestream setup requires a verified channel without a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube offers mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows; choose the encoder workflow for a separate playback source.
  2. Prepare the recording and playback source: Select the recording, check that its audio and picture play correctly from beginning to end, and decide how playback will repeat or move through a playlist. The cited YouTube guidance does not specify a universal loop scheduler or encoder configuration for 24/7 use, so confirm that your chosen software or service can perform the intended playback and restart behavior.
  3. Create the event in YouTube Studio: Create the live event and use its encoder workflow to obtain the stream key and connection details. Treat the stream key as a credential: share it only with trusted operators and keep it out of public notices or documents.
  4. Configure your encoder: Enter the YouTube connection details and select the playback source. Set the output to match the source and the current requirements shown in YouTube’s encoder setup; the available guidance here does not establish one bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval appropriate to every recording, network, and encoder. Avoid guessing settings and test the actual parish configuration.
  5. Preview before broadcast: Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that video and audio are synchronized and audible, and that no unwanted desktop, private information, or unrelated content appears.
  6. Check viewer access: Verify that the event can be opened from the channel and watch page, and test it on a mobile device. YouTube’s published encoder-event guidance recommends setting up at least two hours before the scheduled event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it begins. Those are event-preparation recommendations, not a 24/7 uptime guarantee.
  7. Monitor the stream: Assign an operator to check picture, sound, playback, and YouTube status, and to respond to rights alerts or an interruption. If you plan a backup encoder, test the failover before relying on it.

Make continuous operation a parish responsibility, not an assumption

Before calling the stream 24/7, test the entire path using the parish’s own equipment and account. The available guidance does not specify a validated continuous-loop recipe or a universal redundancy design; YouTube’s event checks are useful but do not guarantee continuous service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Test source playback through the planned repeat or playlist behavior, including what happens when a file ends.
  • Test encoder startup, shutdown, and restart, and confirm who can access the account and stream key.
  • Check how the system behaves if power or internet is interrupted, and test any backup path or failover you choose to use.
  • Decide who will notice a stalled stream, a YouTube copyright alert, or a failed restart, and how that person can respond.
  • Publish a clear notice that the broadcast is prerecorded, and keep the parish’s rights records and escalation contacts accessible to the operator.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a recorded-video stream that should continue without a parish computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera, and it streams to YouTube only. It does not remove the parish’s responsibility to clear rights or ensure that the liturgical use is appropriate.
